Dictation on Windows
Dictation on Windows: Voice Typing, Voice Access, Apps
Every Windows 11 PC can dictate for free: press the Windows key + H to voice type into any text field, or turn on Voice Access to dictate and control the whole PC by voice, which has replaced the deprecated Windows Speech Recognition. Voice typing sends your audio to Microsoft's online speech service, while Voice Access and fluid dictation on Copilot+ PCs work on the device, so the right tool depends on whether you need privacy, offline use, accuracy on long text or hands-free control. A dedicated dictation app fills the gaps the built-in tools leave.

Guides in this topic
Each guide takes one part of the subject in depth.
- Windows Voice Typing: How to Dictate with Win+HOn Windows 10 and 11, put the cursor in a text box, press Windows key + H, wait for the Listening alert and speak. Voice typing is built into Windows, but it needs a microphone and an internet connection, and Microsoft publishes no accuracy figure for it.
- Voice Access in Windows 11: Setup and How It WorksVoice Access is the voice control feature built into Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. It dictates text and controls apps and windows, and it recognizes speech on your PC, so an internet connection is needed only once to download a speech pack for your language.
- Best Dictation Software for Windows: Free and PaidThe best dictation software for most people on Windows is the free dictation already in the PC: Win+H voice typing, which needs internet, and Voice access, which works without internet after setup. Pay for an app only when you need something those tools lack, such as processing that stays on the PC, accuracy on long text and specialist words, AI cleanup, or Dragon-style control of every program. Test each app on your own vocabulary before you buy.
- Windows Dictation Not Working? Fixes for Win+HWhen Win+H does nothing or voice typing stops, the cause is one of five things: a microphone that is wrong or blocked, online speech recognition that is off, no internet connection, a language that is not installed, or Voice access holding the same shortcut. Check them in that order, starting with the two quickest checks.
- Voice Access Commands: The Windows 11 Command ListVoice Access on Windows 11 runs on a few command patterns: open, switch to, click, press, select and correct. Anything on screen without a readable name is reached with number or grid overlays. Learn the patterns first, then check exact wording against Microsoft's full list.
- How to Turn Off Voice Access in Windows 11To stop Voice Access now, say 'Turn off voice access' or switch it off under Settings, Accessibility, Speech. To stop it coming back, also clear the automatic-start checkboxes, because Microsoft says they open Voice Access every time you start the computer. Microsoft's pages describe switching it off, not uninstalling it.
- Windows Voice Typing Commands and PunctuationWindows 11 voice typing understands a short list of spoken editing commands, such as "delete that", "select that" and "stop listening", and spoken names for punctuation marks such as "comma" and "new paragraph". Voice Access, Microsoft's newer hands-free tool, has a much larger command set, including "correct that" and "delete previous word". On Windows 10, dictation commands work only in US English.
- Windows Speech Recognition: Deprecation and ReplacementMicrosoft no longer develops Windows Speech Recognition, and Voice Access replaces it on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. Windows 10 still includes the old tool, but Windows 10 itself is past end of support, so the old tool is a bridge, not a plan.
- Windows Dictation Languages: Voice Typing and Voice AccessWindows 11 voice typing supports 46 languages and regional variants, Voice Access supports 15 languages and dialects, and Windows 10 dictation covers 12 variants for basic text. None of Microsoft's Windows lists includes Bangla or Urdu, and Arabic appears only in Microsoft Word's preview list.
- Offline Speech to Text on Windows: What WorksWindows voice typing needs an internet connection, but Voice Access works offline once it is set up, and open apps such as Buzz, Handy and Murmure run Whisper or Parakeet on the PC itself. Offline models are accurate on clear speech and weaker on noise and telephone audio, and your hardware sets the speed more than the app does.
- Copilot Voice and Dictation on WindowsCopilot can take dictation, but only into its own chat prompt box, and Microsoft lists dictation for work or school accounts. It does not type into Word, email or a browser: for that, use Windows voice typing (Windows key + H) or Voice Access. Copilot Voice is a spoken conversation, not a typing tool.
- Dictation in Windows Apps: Word, Outlook, BrowsersWindows key + H starts voice typing in any app where the cursor is in a text box. Word and Outlook have their own Dictate button, which needs a Microsoft 365 subscription, and Google Docs voice typing runs in Chrome, Edge or Safari. Use the app's own button when it has one, use Windows key + H elsewhere, and test password fields, admin prompts and remote sessions before you rely on them.
- Windows Dictation Privacy and Online Speech RecognitionOn Windows 11, voice typing sends your speech to Microsoft's cloud while online speech recognition is on. Voice Access runs on the PC. Contributing voice clips is a separate, optional choice, and work and school accounts cannot make it.
- Fluid Dictation, Copilot+ PCs and Windows on ArmFluid dictation is a Copilot+ PC feature that corrects grammar, punctuation and filler words as you speak, using a small language model that runs on the device. It works only in English locales. Copilot+ PCs use Intel and AMD chips as well as Arm, and Microsoft's dictation pages do not say whether the built-in tools run natively on Arm, so buy a Copilot+ PC for dictation only if you dictate in English and want the on-device cleanup.
Every Windows 11 PC can dictate for free, with nothing to install. Put the cursor in any text field and press the Windows key + H: voice typing opens and types what you say 1. It needs a working microphone, an internet connection and a cursor in a text box 2, because it uses online speech recognition powered by Microsoft's Azure Speech services 3. If you want to run the whole computer by voice (open apps, click buttons, select and correct text), turn on Voice Access instead. It is available in Windows 11 version 22H2 and later 4, it works without an internet connection 5, and it has replaced the old Windows Speech Recognition 6.
The choice between the tools comes down to four questions: does your audio have to stay on the PC, do you need to work offline, are you writing long or specialist text, and do you need hands-free control? Voice typing is the quickest for short text in 46 languages and variants 7. Voice Access covers control and offline use in fewer languages. On a Copilot+ PC, fluid dictation cleans up grammar and filler words on the device. When none of them is enough (hours of dictation a day, strict privacy, medical or legal vocabulary), a dedicated Windows dictation app is the next step. This page gives the essential answer for each part of the subject and links to the guide that covers it in depth.
Windows has four voice tools, and only two of them type into your apps
Windows ships more than one speech feature, and their names overlap, which is the main source of confusion. Two of them put text into other apps: voice typing and Voice Access. A third, Windows Speech Recognition, is the legacy tool that Voice Access replaced. The fourth, Copilot voice, talks back to you and does not type into your documents. Fluid dictation is not a separate tool: it is an option inside voice typing on Copilot+ PCs.
| Voice typing | Voice Access | Windows Speech Recognition | Copilot voice | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Typing what you say | Dictation plus full control of the PC | Legacy dictation and control | Conversation with an AI assistant |
| How you start it | Windows key + H in a text field | Settings > Accessibility > Speech | Older Windows versions only | "Hey Copilot" or the Copilot app |
| Where speech is processed | Microsoft's cloud | On the PC | On the PC | Microsoft's cloud |
| Works offline | No | Yes, after setup | Yes | No |
| Windows versions | Windows 11 and Windows 10 | Windows 11, 22H2 and later | Older versions, including Windows 10 | Copilot app on Windows |
| Languages | 46 variants | 15 variants | 11 variants | Varies |
| Best for | Messages, notes, quick documents | Hands-free use, accessibility, offline | Existing Windows 10 setups | Questions, drafting with AI |
Voice typing and Voice Access do not run at the same time. If Voice Access is on and you press the Windows key + H, voice typing does not open: Windows tells you to dictate with Voice Access instead 8. In practice, pick one per session. Voice typing is the lighter tool for someone who types with a keyboard and wants to speak a paragraph. Voice Access is for someone who wants to keep their hands off the keyboard and mouse for long stretches, or who cannot use them.
The flowchart below is the short version of the rest of this page.
Speaking is about three times faster than typing, which is why dictation pays off
The reason to bother with any of these tools is speed. In a controlled study at Stanford University and the University of Washington, people entered English text by speech at 153 words per minute 9, against 52 words per minute on the phone's keyboard 10. That study used a phone, not a PC keyboard, and short phrases rather than documents, so treat the ratio as an upper bound for desktop writing: a fast touch typist closes part of the gap, and editing a dictated draft takes time. Our guide to speaking versus typing speed covers the desktop numbers.
Speed is not the only reason. Voice Access sits under Accessibility in Windows settings because it lets people with limited hand use, or pain from typing, operate the PC without a keyboard or mouse. Our overview of speech to text for accessibility covers that side of the subject.
Voice typing is the quick answer: press the Windows key + H in any text field
Voice typing is the dictation tool built into Windows 11, and its shortcut is the Windows key + H on a hardware keyboard, or the microphone button on the touch keyboard 1. There is nothing to download or turn on first: the answer to whether Windows has built-in dictation is yes, on every edition. To dictate:
- Click into the text field where the words should go (a document, an email, a browser box).
- Press Windows key + H. The voice typing menu appears and starts listening.
- Speak normally. Text appears as you talk.
- Say "Stop listening" or press the microphone button on the menu to stop 11.
Three requirements explain most problems: a working microphone, an internet connection, and the cursor in a text box 2. The internet requirement surprises people. Voice typing does not recognize speech on the PC: it sends audio to Microsoft's online service and gets text back 3.
The gear icon on the voice typing menu opens its settings. They include the voice typing launcher, a small button that offers voice typing whenever you click into a text box 12; Automatic punctuation, which inserts punctuation based on what you say 13; Filter profanity, which blocks or allows swear words 14; the default microphone; and a wait-time setting that controls how long voice typing pauses before acting on a command, which Microsoft says helps whether you speak slowly or quickly 15. The question on the voice typing launcher shows each option.
On Windows 10, the same shortcut opens an older dictation toolbar. It accepts speech in 13 language variants, but its spoken commands work only in US English 16. Windows 10 reached the end of support on October 14, 2025, and no longer receives feature or security updates 17, so Voice Access and fluid dictation will not come to it. The question on dictation in Windows 10 covers that version step by step, and how to turn off dictation in Windows 11 covers the reverse. On a laptop, everything above works with the built-in microphone; the question on talk to text on a laptop adds the laptop-specific checks.
The full walkthrough, including what voice typing does poorly, is in our guide to Windows voice typing. The question on the voice typing shortcut is the one-line version.
Voice typing understands spoken punctuation and a short list of editing commands
Voice typing types words, and with Automatic punctuation switched on it adds periods and commas for you 13. For anything else you say the name of the mark or key. Microsoft's tables list phrases such as "question mark" for ? and "new line" or "new paragraph" for line breaks 18. You dictate most numbers and punctuation simply by saying them 19, and an uppercase letter by saying "uppercase" before it 20.
Editing by voice is limited. Voice typing understands commands such as "delete that" and "select that" for the text you just dictated 21, and if a word or phrase is selected, a delete command removes it. It does not let you move around a document, select an arbitrary sentence or replace one word with another by voice. Those are Voice Access features.
| Say this in voice typing | You get |
|---|---|
| "period", "comma", "question mark" | . , ? (or let automatic punctuation add them) |
| "new line", "new paragraph" | A line break or a blank line |
| "uppercase" + a letter | A capital letter |
| "delete that" | Removes the last thing you said |
| "select that" | Selects the last thing you said |
| "stop listening" | Turns voice typing off |
The complete command and symbol tables for Windows 11 and Windows 10, and which commands exist only in Voice Access, are in our guide to voice typing commands and punctuation. Two questions cover the most common needs: adding punctuation with voice typing and correcting a mistake by voice. The same ideas apply on every platform; our overview of dictation and voice typing compares them.
Voice Access dictates and controls the whole PC, and it works offline
Voice Access is the Windows 11 accessibility feature that lets you operate the entire computer by voice and write text with it. Microsoft describes it as a way to control the PC and author text "without an internet connection" 5. It needs Windows 11 version 22H2 or later 4, so the answer to whether Voice Access runs on Windows 10 is no.
Turning it on takes one switch and a download:
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Speech and turn on Voice access (or search for "voice access" from Start).
- On first launch, pick your language and select Agree and continue. Voice Access downloads the language files used by its on-device speech recognition, which needs an internet connection this one time 22.
- Optionally tick Start voice access before you sign in to your PC or after you sign in to launch it automatically.
There is nothing to buy or install from the Store; the question on downloading Voice Access explains what that one-time download is. After setup, Voice Access is controlled by a bar at the top of the screen and by spoken commands. Say "Voice access sleep" or "Mute" to stop it reacting while you talk to someone, and "Voice access wake up" or "Unmute" to resume 23. Say "What can I say" to see the command list on screen 24. Say "Show numbers" to put a numbered label on every clickable item, then say the number to click it 25; "Show grid" divides the screen into numbered squares to reach any point. These number and grid overlays are what make it possible to control Windows 11 entirely with your voice.
Correction is where Voice Access beats voice typing. "Select that" selects your last dictation 26, "Correct that" offers alternatives for it 27, "Delete that" removes it 28, and commands such as "Delete previous word" work word by word 29. If you want to type a phrase that sounds like a command, say "Type" or "Dictate" before it 30.
The trade-off is writing quality. Voice Access is built for control first, and long-form dictation with it is slower to correct than in a dedicated dictation app. The answer to whether Voice Access is any good depends on which of those jobs you need. Three guides cover it in depth: Voice Access in Windows 11 for setup and day-to-day use, Voice Access commands for the full command list by task (including custom commands), and how to turn off Voice Access for when it keeps popping up, which usually means one of the automatic start boxes is ticked. The question what is Voice Access is the short definition.
Windows Speech Recognition is deprecated, and Voice Access has replaced it on Windows 11
Windows Speech Recognition was the built-in voice control and dictation tool in earlier versions of Windows. Microsoft added it to its list of deprecated features in December 2023, saying it "is no longer being developed" and is being replaced with Voice Access 31. The replacement took effect in September 2024 for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, and Speech Recognition remains only on older versions of Windows 6.
What you lose and gain in the move:
- Gained: on-device recognition that works offline, overlays, and active development. Voice Access gets new languages and fixes; Speech Recognition does not 32.
- Changed: the old voice training wizard and speech dictionary are gone. Voice Access instead has an Add to vocabulary command for hard-to-pronounce words 33, and the question on training Voice Access explains what that does.
- Languages: Speech Recognition supported 11 variants: five kinds of English, French, German, Japanese, two forms of Chinese, and Spanish 34. Voice Access now covers 15 35.
If you are on Windows 10, Speech Recognition is still your built-in voice control. If you upgrade to Windows 11, expect to relearn some commands. Our guide to Windows Speech Recognition gives the full timeline, a command mapping, and the speech APIs developers can still build on, such as the Windows Speech API and Azure AI Speech. The questions on whether Speech Recognition still exists in Windows 11 and Voice Access versus Speech Recognition answer the two most common searches.
Voice typing covers 46 language variants, Voice Access 15, and the older tools fewer
Language support is the biggest practical difference between the tools, and it follows from where the speech is processed. Voice typing runs on Microsoft's cloud service and lists 46 languages and regional variants, from Bulgarian to Vietnamese, including Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Korean, Japanese and Thai 7. Voice Access recognizes speech on the PC, and each language needs its own downloaded speech pack, so it covers 15 languages and dialects 35. Windows 10 dictation covers 13 16, and the retired Speech Recognition 11 34.
Microsoft's own pages do not always agree. Its Voice Access FAQ still lists four languages, while the setup page lists 15 variants, including Japanese, Chinese and Italian; we count the longer, more recent list 35. Fluid dictation works in English only 36.
You change the voice typing language by switching the Windows input language (the language switcher on the taskbar, or Windows key + Spacebar) 37. If the current input language is not supported, voice typing will not start and Microsoft tells you to install a supported language 38. Spoken commands and punctuation change with the language you dictate in.
The full side-by-side table and the steps are in our guide to Windows dictation languages. The questions on changing the voice typing language, Voice Access languages and voice typing in Bangla, Urdu or Arabic cover the common cases. For languages Windows does not support, our overview of dictation languages and accents lists the alternatives.
Voice typing sends your voice to Microsoft's cloud, while Voice Access and fluid dictation stay on the PC
Windows 11 has two kinds of speech recognition, and the privacy answer depends on which one a feature uses. Device-based recognition processes your voice locally, and no voice data is sent to Microsoft 39. Online speech recognition sends voice data to Microsoft to create the transcription; Microsoft says it does not store, sample or listen to those recordings without your permission 40. Voice typing uses the online kind 3. Voice Access uses on-device recognition 22. Fluid dictation's cleanup runs on small language models on the device 41.
The switches that control this:
| Setting | Where | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Online speech recognition | Settings > Privacy & security > Speech | Off: voice typing stops working, and only device-based features remain 42 |
| Contribute voice clips | Voice typing settings (gear icon) | Optional: lets Microsoft keep samples to improve its models |
| Work or school account | Set by your organization | Voice clip sharing is not available; voice typing still works 43 |
| Microphone access | Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone | Off: no app, including voice typing, can hear you 44 |
A privacy setting is not a compliance program. If you dictate patient notes, client files or anything under HIPAA or similar rules, the question is whether your organization has an agreement covering the service, not which switch is on. The question is Windows dictation HIPAA compliant explains what the documentation does and does not say. The full map of every speech-related switch is in our guide to Windows dictation privacy, with short answers on what online speech recognition is and whether Voice Access sends audio to Microsoft. For the wider subject, see our overview of speech to text privacy.
Offline dictation on Windows means Voice Access or an app that runs a local model
Voice typing stops working without an internet connection, because the recognition happens on Microsoft's servers 2. The question does Windows voice typing work offline has a short answer: no. You have two offline routes.
The first is Voice Access. Once its language files are downloaded, it recognizes speech on the PC 22 and keeps working with Wi-Fi off 5. It is free, but it is built for control, and its languages are limited to 15 variants.
The second is a dictation app that runs an open speech model locally. OpenAI's Whisper models, trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual audio 45, and NVIDIA's Parakeet models, which cover 25 European languages in their latest version 46, are the engines behind most of these apps. Free, open-source options run on Windows: Handy works on Windows, macOS and Linux 47, OpenWhispr runs Whisper and Parakeet models offline 48, and Buzz transcribes audio files offline on a personal computer 49. The trade-off is a one-time model download and some CPU, GPU or NPU work on your machine, in exchange for audio that never leaves the PC and no network delay.
Our guide to offline speech to text on Windows compares the options and the hardware they need, with questions on installing Whisper on Windows and open-source dictation for Windows. The engines themselves are covered in our overview of speech recognition, including how to run Whisper locally.
Fluid dictation on Copilot+ PCs cleans up your words on the device, in English only
Fluid dictation is an option in voice typing on Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft says it corrects grammar, punctuation and filler words as you speak 50, using small language models that run on the device 41. It is available in all English locales 36 and turns itself off in secure fields such as passwords and PINs 51. The question what is fluid dictation gives the one-paragraph answer.
A Copilot+ PC is defined by its neural processing unit: Microsoft says many of the new Windows AI features require an NPU that can run at 40 or more TOPS (trillion operations per second) 52. That figure measures the chip's peak AI throughput, not dictation accuracy, and you do not need a Copilot+ PC to dictate well: voice typing, Voice Access and third-party apps all run on ordinary Windows 11 hardware.
Many Copilot+ PCs use Arm processors, which raises a compatibility question. Windows on Arm runs native Arm apps and many unmodified x86 and x64 apps 53, helped since Windows 11 24H2 by the Prism emulator 54. The built-in voice tools are part of Windows and run natively. The catch for dictation is drivers: emulation covers only user-mode code and does not support drivers 55, so dictation software, foot pedals or microphones that install their own drivers need Arm64 versions. Check with the vendor before you buy an Arm laptop for dictation.
Our guide to fluid dictation, Copilot+ PCs and Windows on Arm covers this in depth, with questions on whether dictation software works on Windows on Arm and whether Voice Access uses AI. Our page on dictation on Windows on Arm covers app compatibility.
Copilot listens and answers, but it does not type into your other apps
Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant, and its voice features are for talking to Copilot, not for dictating into Word or email. You can start a voice chat by saying "Hey Copilot", but that wake word is off by default: you turn on Listen for "Hey Copilot" in the Copilot app's settings 56. The PC detects the phrase locally, with an on-device service that keeps a 10-second audio buffer in memory that is never recorded or stored 57. Once Copilot hears the wake word, the conversation goes to Microsoft's service, so Copilot needs an internet connection to answer 58. A voice chat ends after one minute without speech 59.
So the answer to whether Copilot can take dictation is: it can take a spoken prompt and write a draft from it, but it does not type your words verbatim into the app you are in. For that, use voice typing, Voice Access or the Dictate button in Microsoft 365 apps, then ask Copilot to summarize or rewrite the result. Our guide to Copilot voice and dictation on Windows separates the Copilot app, Microsoft 365 Copilot and voice typing, with questions on talking to Copilot by voice and whether Copilot can transcribe audio. The difference between assistants and dictation in general is covered in our overview of speech to text AI.
Voice typing works in almost every app, while Word and Google Docs bring their own dictation
Voice typing types into any app that accepts keyboard text: browsers, email, chat apps, Office, note apps. Two popular editors also have their own dictation, which works differently.
Microsoft Word has a Dictate button. In Word for Windows you can start it with Alt + ` (the backquote key) or Alt+H, D 60. It needs Microsoft 365 and a reliable internet connection 61, and it has its own command set. Google Docs voice typing runs in the browser: Google says it works in recent versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari 62, and you start it from Tools > Voice typing or with Ctrl + Shift + S 63.
| Where you are typing | Windows key + H | The app's own dictation |
|---|---|---|
| Word, Outlook (Microsoft 365) | Works | Dictate button, needs Microsoft 365 and internet |
| Google Docs in Chrome or Edge | Works | Tools > Voice typing, Google's service |
| Browsers, email, Slack, Teams | Works | Usually none |
| Password fields | Fluid dictation turns off 51 | None |
| Terminals and code editors | Works, symbols need care | None; a dictation app handles code better |
| Desktop apps without mic permission | No sound reaches it | Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone 64 |
Which one to use? In Word, Dictate adds Word's own editing and formatting commands, such as "capitalize" followed by a word or phrase 65; voice typing behaves the same in every app. The question Word Dictate or Windows voice typing weighs them. Our guide to dictation in Windows apps gives the app-by-app details, with questions on whether voice typing works in every app, a Google Docs voice typing app for Windows and a voice keyboard for PC. The app guides themselves, such as dictating in Word and Google Docs voice typing, are in our overview of voice typing in apps and browsers.
When dictation stops working, check the microphone, the connection, the language and Voice Access in that order
Voice typing fails for a short list of reasons, and checking them in order fixes nearly every case:
- Microphone permission. In Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, Microphone access must be on 44, and desktop apps have a separate switch that must also be on 64. Microsoft names microphone access as the first thing voice typing needs 66. Then check that the right input device is selected in the voice typing settings.
- Internet and online speech recognition. Voice typing needs a connection 2, and with Online speech recognition off, only on-device features work 42.
- Language. If your current input language does not support voice typing, it will not start 38. Switch to a supported input language.
- Voice Access. If Voice Access is running, the Windows key + H shows a message instead of opening voice typing 8. Turn Voice Access off or dictate with it.
- The shortcut and policy. If the Windows key + H does nothing at all, check whether another utility has remapped it, and on a work or school PC ask whether an administrator has turned speech features off.
Voice typing that stops mid-sentence is a different problem from voice typing that never starts, and its causes (long pauses, an unstable connection, the wait-time setting) need different fixes. Voice Access problems usually trace back to its language download, which needs an internet connection the first time 67.
Our guide to Windows dictation not working orders every fix with exact Settings paths. The common symptoms each have a question: the Windows key + H not working, dictation stuck on initializing, voice typing that keeps stopping, allowing microphone access and Voice Access not working. The microphone itself is covered in our guide to choosing a dictation microphone.
Built-in tools are enough for short text; a dedicated app pays off for long, private or specialist work
Start with what Windows includes. Voice typing and Voice Access are free, and for messages, emails and short documents they are often all you need. The question best free dictation software for Windows starts there, and is Windows dictation any good gives an honest assessment. Pay for software only for what the built-in tools lack: offline processing with good accuracy, custom vocabulary, AI cleanup in languages other than English, or Dragon-style command control.
Windows dictation software falls into a few groups:
| Group | Where speech is processed | Examples (checked October 2026) | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in | Microsoft's cloud (voice typing) or the PC (Voice Access) | Voice typing, Voice Access | Free, system-wide | Online only for voice typing; limited editing or languages |
| Dragon | On the PC | Dragon Professional 16 | Deep command control, custom vocabulary | Paid license, Windows only |
| Cloud AI apps | Vendor's servers | Wispr Flow | AI rewriting and formatting as you speak | Audio leaves the PC, usually a subscription |
| On-device apps | On the PC | Superwhisper, Handy, OpenWhispr | Privacy, offline use | Needs a reasonably modern PC |
| Voice coding and control | On the PC | Talon | Programming by voice, full control | Learning curve |
Dragon Professional 16 is the long-standing choice for command-heavy professional work. Nuance lists Windows 11 and Windows 10 among its supported systems 68, with Windows 11 support new in version 16 69, and a minimum of 4 GB of RAM 70. It is not cheap: CDW listed a one-user license at $685.99 when we checked 71. The questions is Windows voice typing as good as Dragon and does Dragon work with Windows 11 cover the comparison.
Cloud AI dictation apps such as Wispr Flow, which lists Mac, Windows, iOS and Android 72, rewrite your speech into polished text, which requires sending it to their servers. On-device apps keep audio on the PC: Superwhisper's free plan dictates with local Whisper models 73 and one Pro license covers unlimited Macs and Windows PCs 74, while the open-source apps above are free. Talon, a hands-free input tool popular for programming by voice, offers downloads for Windows, macOS and Linux 75. Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Windows and Mac; see Yap for Windows or download it if that is what you need.
Before you pay, test any app on your own vocabulary, in the apps you actually use, and check where it sends audio. Our guide to the best dictation software for Windows compares the groups and named apps with dated facts and a test checklist, and the question on AI dictation apps for Windows lists the current options. Our overview of dictation software covers how to choose across every platform, and how to choose a dictation app is a shorter checklist.
Windows dictation works much like dictation on a Mac, with different trade-offs
Both platforms give you free system-wide dictation and a separate full voice control feature. The main differences are where the speech is processed and how the tools are split. On a Mac with Apple silicon, Apple Dictation processes 48 language variants on the Mac itself 76, and Voice Control replaces Dictation while it runs 77. On Windows, voice typing is cloud-based, and Voice Access is the on-device option. If you use both computers, our overview of dictation on Mac is the matching page, and a dictation app that runs on both keeps your habits and vocabulary the same across them.

Questions people ask
- Can Copilot take dictation?Yes. Copilot can take dictation in its own chat prompt box: select Start dictation there and Copilot turns your speech into text. Microsoft describes it only for that box, so for Word, email or a browser, use Windows voice typing (Windows key + H).
- Can Copilot transcribe audio to text? Not in Copilot Chat, as far as Microsoft documents it. Microsoft's Copilot voice pages describe dictation and a transcript of your own voice chat, but not uploading an audio file. Audio file transcription is a feature of Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows (Home, Dictate, Transcribe), with monthly limits by license.
- Can you control Windows 11 entirely with your voice?Mostly, yes. Voice Access on Windows 11, version 22H2 or later, can open and switch apps, click named items, press keys and reach unnamed items with number and grid overlays, all without internet after setup. Microsoft says it covers all tasks on the PC, but the pages we read give no list of exceptions. Unnamed targets, recognition errors and overlays on a second monitor are where it falls short, so test the tasks you depend on before you rely on it.
- Can you dictate from an iPhone to a Windows PC?No built-in feature sends iPhone dictation to a Windows PC. Two routes can work today: dictate into a Word document on the iPhone that syncs to the PC, or dictate through a remote session to the PC, which you should test first. Apple's clipboard bridge to Windows is not available yet.
- Can you give voice commands to a Windows PC?Yes. Windows 11, version 22H2 or later, has a built-in feature called Voice Access that runs voice commands such as opening apps, clicking items and pressing keys, and it works without internet once it is set up. Windows 10 and older Windows 11 versions keep the older Windows Speech Recognition instead.
- Can you train Voice Access to recognize your voice?Only in a limited way. Microsoft's pages describe no training session like the ones older dictation software uses, and the one voice-learning step is Voice Isolation, a one-time setup in which you read a paragraph aloud so the feature creates a voice signature on your PC. You can re-record or delete that signature, and you can add hard-to-recognize words to its vocabulary.
- Can you uninstall Voice Access from Windows 11?Microsoft's pages do not explain how to uninstall Voice Access from Windows 11, and we found no documented way to remove the feature itself. A third-party guide says you can remove its language packs, which it lists under Installed apps. To stop the feature running, turn it off and clear its startup checkboxes, which Microsoft's pages do describe.
- Can you voice type in Bangla, Urdu or Arabic on Windows? Not with Windows' built-in tools. Microsoft's voice typing, Voice Access and Windows 10 dictation lists include neither Bangla nor Urdu, and Arabic appears only in the preview list for dictation in Microsoft Word, which needs a Microsoft 365 subscription and an internet connection. For Bangla or Urdu, you need a browser or third-party tool, and you should test it with your own speech first.
- Do you need to download Voice Access for Windows 11?No, Voice Access is built into Windows 11 and you turn it on in Settings rather than installing it from the Microsoft Store. Setup downloads a speech pack for your language, which needs an internet connection once, and after that Voice Access works without internet.
- Does Copilot have meeting transcription? No, not on its own. Inside Microsoft Teams, Copilot can use a meeting transcript, which exists only when transcription is turned on, and it can write AI notes without one. Microsoft's Copilot meeting guides cover Teams only. For Zoom, use Zoom's own transcription, which needs a cloud recording. For an in-person meeting, record it and transcribe the file.
- Does dictation software work on Windows on Arm?Yes, dictation software can run on Windows on Arm, either as a native Arm64 app or as an x64 app through emulation. Emulation runs many apps but cannot load kernel-mode drivers, so check any microphone or pedal that installs one. Microsoft's built-in tools do not name a processor type, and the supported-systems list for Dragon Professional 16 names no Arm build, so test the tool you plan to use before you buy.
- Does Dragon NaturallySpeaking work with Windows 11?Yes, Dragon Professional 16 works with Windows 11, and Nuance lists Windows 11 only in its 64-bit form. We found no Nuance statement that Dragon 15, 14 or 13 supports Windows 11, so if you own an older version, treat it as unsupported and confirm with Nuance before you upgrade or rely on it.
- Does Voice Access send your voice to Microsoft?Microsoft says Voice Access does its speech recognition on your PC, and that it works without an internet connection after a first-time language download. None of the Microsoft pages we read says that no audio ever leaves the PC, so the answer is on-device according to Microsoft, not verified by us. Test your own PC before you rely on it for sensitive work.
- Does Windows have built-in dictation?Yes. Windows 11 has built-in dictation, which Microsoft calls voice typing, and you start it with Windows key + H. It needs an internet connection. Voice Access is the broader built-in tool, and it replaces the deprecated Windows Speech Recognition.
- Does Windows Voice Access use AI?Microsoft does not describe Voice Access as AI. It describes on-device speech recognition, and machine learning is common in modern recognizers, but Microsoft does not say which kind Voice Access uses. The AI Microsoft names is fluid dictation, which uses a small language model on Copilot+ PCs.
- Does Windows Voice Access work offline?Yes, after setup. Voice Access on Windows 11, version 22H2 or later, recognizes speech on your PC and works without an internet connection, but its first-time setup, including the language download, needs one. We found no published accuracy figure for offline use, from Microsoft or independent testers, so test it on your own voice before you rely on it.
- Does Windows voice typing work in every app?Not guaranteed. Microsoft says voice typing can start only when the cursor is in a text box, but it does not name the apps one by one. Test each app you use with a short sentence. Expect limits or no documentation in password fields, admin prompts, full-screen games and some remote sessions.
- Does Windows voice typing work offline? No. Windows voice typing, started with Windows key + H, sends your speech to Microsoft's online speech service, so it stops without an internet connection. Voice Access works offline once its one-time setup, which needs the internet, is finished.
- How do you add punctuation with Windows voice typing? In Windows 11 voice typing, say the name of the mark, such as "comma", "period" or "question mark", and it is inserted at the cursor. You can also turn on the Automatic punctuation setting so voice typing adds marks based on what you say, and on Copilot+ PCs fluid dictation corrects punctuation as you speak.
- How do you allow microphone access on Windows? On Windows 11, select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, turn on Microphone access, then turn on Let apps access your microphone and Let desktop apps access your microphone. On Windows 10, the switches are under Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone: turn on Microphone access for this device and Allow apps to access your microphone.
- How do you change the voice typing language in Windows 11?Install the language once under Settings, then Time & language, then Language & region, using Add a language. Then switch to it with the language switcher on the taskbar or by pressing Windows key + Spacebar, and press Windows key + H to start voice typing. If the language is not on Microsoft's voice typing list, voice typing will not run in it.
- How do you choose the microphone Windows dictation uses?To choose the microphone Windows dictation uses, select the device you speak into under Start > Settings > System > Sound > Input, then check that the Default microphone setting in the voice typing gear menu names the same device. If the built-in microphone gets words wrong, Microsoft suggests trying a headset or an external microphone.
- How do you correct a mistake with Windows voice typing?Right after you dictate a wrong word or phrase, say "Delete that" to remove it, or say "Select that" and dictate the replacement over it. Say "Undo that" or "Revert" to undo a fluid dictation change. Voice typing has no "Correct that" command for words further back, so use the keyboard there or switch to Voice Access.
- How do you create custom commands in Voice Access? In Voice Access you create a custom command by making a voice shortcut: say a trigger phrase, then add up to eight actions and save. Voice shortcuts are available only in six English locales, and the feature needs Windows 11, version 22H2 or later.
- How do you dictate text with Voice Access?Say Dictation mode in Voice Access, then speak: each phrase is written into the text box that has focus. Automatic punctuation is off by default, and Correct that offers numbered alternatives when a word is wrong. Fluid dictation, which fixes grammar as you speak, is available only on a Copilot+ PC.
- How do you disable the Voice Access keyboard shortcut?Microsoft's pages document no keyboard shortcut that starts or stops Voice Access, so there is no start shortcut to disable. The two shortcuts Microsoft lists, Alt+Shift+B and Alt+Shift+C, switch Voice Access between sleep and listening and turn the microphone off and on, and its pages do not describe a setting to turn them off. The key people usually mean, Windows key + H, starts voice typing, not Voice Access, and Microsoft does not document a way to disable it.
- How do you fix Voice Access error 9001 in Windows 11?Install all pending Windows 11 updates, restart, and open Voice access again, because Microsoft's release notes say the error state 9001 has been fixed. If setup shows the message that it can't download the required language files instead, check your internet connection and whether the Microsoft Store works, and ask your IT administrator if the Store is blocked.
- How do you hide the Voice Access bar in Windows 11?Microsoft documents no way to hide the Voice Access bar while Voice Access is running. Microsoft says the bar is docked and fixed at the top of the screen, and its menus offer no option to hide it. The bar leaves the screen when you turn Voice Access off, by saying Turn off voice access or setting Voice access to Off under Settings, Accessibility, Speech.
- How do you install Whisper on Windows?Whisper installs as a Python package, so you set it up from a terminal. Install Python 3.8 to 3.11 and ffmpeg, run pip install -U openai-whisper, then test it on an audio file. If you would rather not use a terminal, Buzz, a separate app, has a Windows installer.
- How do you set up speech recognition on Windows 10?On Windows 10, check your microphone, then type Windows Speech Recognition into the taskbar search and select it to start the setup wizard. If the training dialog does not appear, use Control Panel's Ease of Access path. Windows 10 is past end of support, so treat the tool as a short-term option and plan a move to Windows 11.
- How do you talk to Copilot with your voice on Windows? On Windows, press Win+C or the Copilot key to start a voice chat in quick view, if the Microsoft Copilot app is installed on your desktop. In Copilot Chat, you can also select the Voice icon in the message composer. The controls are on-screen buttons, and Hey Copilot is an optional wake word that is off by default.
- How do you transcribe an audio file on Windows? On Windows, the simplest route is Word for Microsoft 365, whose Transcribe pane turns an uploaded audio file into text, but it needs an internet connection and a Microsoft 365 commercial account. For a recording you want to transcribe with no connection, use Buzz, which imports audio and video files and transcribes them on your own computer.
- How do you turn off dictation in Windows 11?To stop voice typing from working in Windows 11, open **Settings > Privacy & security > Speech** and switch **Online speech recognition** to Off, because voice typing depends on it. Microsoft's pages do not describe a separate on/off switch for voice typing.
- How do you turn on Voice Access in Windows 11?Open Settings, select Accessibility and then Speech, and turn on the Voice access switch. Choose your language, let the speech pack download, and Voice Access is ready. You need Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, and an internet connection for the download.
- How do you use dictation on Windows 10?On Windows 10, click into a text box, press Windows logo key + H to open the dictation toolbar, and speak. Dictation is built into Windows 10 but needs an internet connection, and you stop it by saying 'Stop dictation'. Its spoken editing commands work only in US English.
- How do you use talk to text on a laptop? On a Windows laptop, click into a text box, press Windows key + H and speak. On a Mac laptop, turn on Dictation in Keyboard settings and press its shortcut. Windows voice typing needs a working microphone, an internet connection and the cursor in a text box.
- How do you use Voice Access in Windows 11?Say "Voice access wake up" to start listening, then speak a command or dictate text. Say "What can I say" to see the commands, and press Alt+Shift+B to switch between sleep and listening. Read the transcription on the bar to catch misheard words before you act on them.
- How do you wake up Voice Access and put it to sleep?Say Voice access wake up or Unmute to make Voice Access listen, and Voice access sleep or Mute to put it to sleep. Alt+Shift+B switches between sleep and listening from the keyboard, and Turn off voice access closes the feature, which is a separate step.
- Is there a Google Docs voice typing app for Windows? No. Google Docs voice typing is a feature of the browser, not a Windows program, so there is nothing to download for it. Open the document in Chrome or Edge, then choose **Tools** > **Voice typing**. For dictation in other Windows apps, use Windows voice typing instead.
- Is there a speech to text API for Windows apps?Yes, but the UWP speech API's predefined dictation grammars depend on the network, so an offline app must use a grammar installed on the device. For on-device recognition, Microsoft offers the Embedded Speech SDK, which needs an approved access request, and heise reported in June 2026 that a new local speech API was in public preview, English only at first.
- Is there a voice keyboard for Windows PCs?Yes. Windows voice typing works as a voice keyboard: press Windows key + H in a text box, or tap the microphone button on the touch keyboard. Third-party apps such as Handy, which is free and open source, add a voice keyboard that can run offline, while paid tools such as Dragon and Aqua Voice cost money.
- Is there a Whisper app for Windows?Yes. Buzz, which has a Windows installer, transcribes audio files offline using Whisper. Handy can run Whisper models for live dictation into any app. Murmure's README names a Parakeet model, not Whisper, and we could not verify the Murmur app that some software directories list.
- Is Voice Access available on Windows 10?No. Microsoft lists Voice Access only for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, and its FAQ lists voice typing, not Voice Access, for Windows 10. Windows 10 has voice typing, which needs an internet connection, and the older Windows Speech Recognition, which Microsoft is no longer developing.
- Is Voice Access better than Windows Speech Recognition? On Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, Voice Access is the better choice, mainly because Microsoft no longer develops Windows Speech Recognition and Voice Access covers more languages. Microsoft has not published an accuracy test comparing the two, so no source shows that Voice Access recognizes speech more accurately. On Windows 10, the old tool is the only built-in option.
- Is Windows dictation any good?Windows dictation is good for short, everyday text in a quiet room, and it is built in. It is less certain for long documents and specialist words, which we found no test of, and for private text if you use Win+H voice typing, which needs the internet. Microsoft says Voice Access might make mistakes recognizing dictated text, so test it on your own voice before you rely on it.
- Is Windows dictation HIPAA compliant? We could not find a Microsoft statement that covers Windows voice typing or Voice Access under a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement, so do not assume Windows dictation is HIPAA compliant. Get the answer in writing from Microsoft and your compliance team before you dictate protected health information. This is general information, not legal advice.
- Is Windows Speech Recognition still available in Windows 11?No, not on most current Windows 11 PCs. Microsoft replaced Windows Speech Recognition with Voice Access on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later in September 2024, and says the old tool remains only in older versions of Windows. On those PCs there is nothing to download: turn on Voice Access, which is built in.
- Is Windows Voice Access any good?Yes, for many Windows 11 users who want hands-free control or quick dictation, Voice Access is good, and it keeps working without internet after setup. It is weakest at moving around inside apps, editing dictated text and telling words apart from commands, and the reviews we found are from 2022 and 2023, so test it on your own work before you rely on it.
- Is Windows Voice Access as good as Dragon? For many people, Voice Access is good enough, and it is built into Windows 11. We found no independent test that compares it with Dragon Professional on the same audio, so no one can honestly say it is as accurate for your voice. Dragon is a paid product, so test both on your own voice and vocabulary before you pay.
- Is Windows Voice Access free?Yes, as far as Microsoft's public pages show. Voice Access is built into Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, you do not buy or install a separate app, and its setup steps include no purchase or subscription. The only step that needs internet is the download of the speech pack for your language, during setup.
- Is Windows Voice Access HIPAA compliant? We could not confirm that Windows Voice Access is HIPAA compliant. Microsoft says it works on your PC without an internet connection, but its HIPAA pages do not name Voice Access under a Business Associate Agreement. Get Microsoft's answer in writing before you dictate protected health information.
- Is Windows voice typing as good as Dragon? For short, everyday writing, Windows voice typing is built in and often good enough. Dragon Professional 16 supports custom words, commands and auto-texts, and it costs about $686 to $699 per license. We found no independent test that runs both on the same audio, so the honest answer is to test both on your own text before you pay.
- Should you use Word's Dictate or Windows voice typing?Use Word's **Dictate** button if you write mainly in Word and have a Microsoft 365 subscription. Use Windows voice typing (Windows key + H) if you write across many apps or have no subscription, because Microsoft's requirements for voice typing list no subscription. Word's Dictate sends your speech to Microsoft, and voice typing needs an internet connection.
- What dictation commands work in Windows 10?Windows 10 dictation understands a short set of spoken commands. Say "Delete that" or "strike that" to delete the last dictated text, "Select that" to select it, "Start spelling" before a letter or symbol, and "Stop dictation" to stop. Microsoft says these commands are available in US English only.
- What is fluid dictation in Windows 11?Fluid dictation is a Windows 11 feature that corrects grammar, punctuation and filler words as you speak, using a small language model on your PC. It needs a Copilot+ PC and is offered in English locales, so on other PCs or in other languages you get standard dictation without the cleanup.
- What is online speech recognition in Windows?Online speech recognition is the Windows 11 setting that decides whether your voice is turned into text by Microsoft's cloud. Microsoft says the cloud path gives more accurate recognition, and voice typing depends on it. Turn it off under Privacy & security, then Speech, if you do not want your audio sent to Microsoft.
- What is the best alternative to Windows dictation? The best alternative depends on what Windows dictation gets wrong for you. For offline use with audio kept on the PC, try a free local app such as Handy; for everyday dictation, a cloud app works, but its audio is sent to remote servers. For more control of your PC by voice, Dragon Professional is the paid option to test.
- What is the best free dictation software for Windows? For most people, the best dictation software on Windows is already built in: Win+H voice typing for short text, which needs an internet connection, and Voice Access on Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, which works without internet once it is set up. If you want transcription that stays on your own computer, the free, open-source app Handy is the main option we checked.
- What is the best medical dictation software for Windows? No single medical dictation software for Windows is proven best. Dragon Medical One is the product this guide uses as its example: it is cloud-based, sold per user through resellers, and in a 2025 pilot its accuracy was not statistically different from a Whisper-based model. Choose on vocabulary, cost and privacy terms, and get the vendor's written HIPAA business associate terms before any patient information goes into an app.
- What is the best speech recognition software for Windows? For most people on Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, the best speech recognition software is the built-in Voice Access, with Win+H voice typing for quick text. Choose a paid or on-device app when accuracy on your own vocabulary, or keeping audio on the PC, matters more than cost. The studies we found do not show a clear winner, so test the candidates on your own voice.
- What is the difference between Voice Access and voice typing?Voice typing turns your speech into text in the text box you are in, and it needs an internet connection every time you use it. Voice Access controls apps and text across the whole PC, and it recognizes speech on your PC, so it works offline once its one-time setup is done.
- What is the keyboard shortcut for Voice Access in Windows 11?Microsoft's Voice Access pages list no keyboard shortcut that starts Voice Access. Its two shortcuts are Alt+Shift+B, which switches between sleep and listening, and Alt+Shift+C, which turns the microphone off and back on. Windows key + H starts voice typing, and Windows key + Ctrl + S starts the older Windows Speech Recognition.
- What is the shortcut for voice typing in Windows? On Windows 10 and 11, the shortcut for voice typing is **Windows key + H**. Click into a text box first, because voice typing only starts when the cursor is in one, then wait for the Listening alert before you speak.
- What is the voice typing launcher in Windows 11?The voice typing launcher is a Windows 11 setting that lets you start voice typing quickly when your cursor is in a text box. You find it under the gear icon in the voice typing menu, next to automatic punctuation and profanity filtering.
- What is Voice Access in Windows 11?Voice Access is the voice control feature built into Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. You use it to dictate text and to control apps and windows by speaking, and it recognizes speech on your PC, so it keeps working without internet once its speech pack is downloaded.
- What settings does Voice Access have in Windows 11?Voice Access settings open from the Settings button on the Voice access bar. They cover the microphone, languages, the wait time before a command runs, automatic startup, three speech recognition options, adding words to the vocabulary, and fluid dictation. Voice Access is not offered on Windows 10, so it has no settings there.
- Which AI dictation apps work on Windows?Several AI dictation apps run on Windows, including Wispr Flow, which sends your speech to its servers, and Handy, which is free and open source. Claude Code's /voice dictation also runs on Windows, but it streams audio to Anthropic and needs a Claude.ai sign-in. Choose by where your audio goes before you compare features or price.
- Which languages does Voice Access support?Voice Access in Windows 11 supports 15 languages and dialects according to Microsoft's setup page: six English variants, two Spanish, two French, two Chinese, German, Japanese and Italian. It has no Portuguese. Microsoft's command list and FAQ name fewer languages, so check the list on your own PC's setup screen.
- Which languages does Windows 10 dictation support?Windows 10 dictation can write basic text, symbols, letters and numbers in 12 language variants: Simplified Chinese, four English variants, two French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and two Spanish. Its dictation commands work only in US English, and dictation needs an internet connection.
- Which open-source dictation apps run on Windows?Handy and Murmure are the open-source dictation apps we could verify on Windows. Handy lists Windows as a platform, and Murmure ships a Windows installer that needs Windows 10 or later. nerd-dictation is a Linux tool, and its README lists Windows only as possible future work.
- Why does Voice Access keep popping up in Windows 11?Voice Access most likely keeps opening because one of its two automatic-start checkboxes is still ticked, and Microsoft says those checkboxes launch the feature every time you start your computer. Clear both under Settings, Accessibility, Speech, then restart to check. Microsoft's pages do not say what happens to these checkboxes when you switch the feature off, so the checkbox is our most likely explanation, not a confirmed one.
- Why does Windows voice typing keep stopping?Microsoft documents two ways voice typing stops: you say a stop command such as 'Stop listening', or you press the microphone button. Voice typing needs an internet connection, so a lost connection is a possible cause of a stop you did not ask for, although Microsoft does not describe that case. Microsoft's help page does not describe an automatic stop after silence, so if it stops with no command from you, check the internet connection and the microphone input first.
- Why is dictation not working in Copilot?Copilot dictation can fail when microphone access is blocked or Windows listens to the wrong microphone. Check those two settings first, then whether your account includes dictation.
- Why is dictation not working on my laptop? On a Windows laptop, dictation can fail because the wrong input is selected, microphone access is blocked for the app, or the tool needs an internet connection that is not working. Check the input device and the microphone permissions first, then the internet and the online speech setting. Dictation on Windows 10 and Voice access work differently, so confirm which tool you are using before you change anything.
- Why is speech recognition not working on Windows?Speech recognition on Windows usually stops at one of a few points: the wrong microphone is selected, microphone access is off, the online speech setting is off, the language is not supported, or Voice Access is running and blocking voice typing. On Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, the old tool is gone, so check that you are opening Voice Access rather than looking for Windows Speech Recognition.
- Why is the touch keyboard not working in Windows 11?In Windows 11 the touch keyboard appears on its own only on a tablet with no keyboard attached, and a taskbar icon set to Never stops it from appearing at all. Set the touch keyboard icon to Always in the taskbar settings so you can open the keyboard on demand. If it still does not appear, check the Typing setting that shows the keyboard when the device is not in tablet mode and no keyboard is attached.
- Why is the Windows key + H not working?Windows key + H does nothing for a few documented reasons: the cursor is not in a text box, Voice Access is running and blocks voice typing, there is no internet connection, or online speech recognition is off. Click into a text box, close Voice Access, then check the internet connection, online speech recognition and the microphone.
- Why is Voice Access not working in Windows 11?In Windows 11, Voice Access can fail for one of four reasons: the PC runs a Windows version older than 22H2, the first-time language download cannot reach the Microsoft Store, the microphone is off or blocked by a privacy setting, or the PC shows error 9001, which Microsoft's release notes say has been fixed in Windows updates. Check the version and the download first, then the microphone, and install the latest updates if you see error 9001.
- Why is voice typing not available in Windows 11?Voice typing is not available in Windows 11 when the language you are using is not one that Microsoft supports for it. Switch to a supported language with Windows logo key + Spacebar, or add one under Time & language, and check Microsoft's list of supported languages before you try anything else. If your language is supported, check Voice access, the online speech setting and the microphone.
- Why is Windows dictation stuck on initializing?Microsoft's voice typing help does not describe an initializing state, so none of its steps name that label. The documented step is to wait for the Listening alert before you speak. If the alert never appears, check the internet connection, online speech recognition, the selected microphone and whether Voice Access is running.
- Why is Word dictation not working on Windows 11?Word dictation on Windows 11 can fail when the Microsoft 365 subscription is missing, the document is read-only, another app holds the microphone, or Windows blocks apps from the microphone. Check the subscription first, then the document, the microphone and the connection.
