From download to first thought

Let’s get you talking.

Mac: M1 and later · No Intel build

  1. 01

    Move in.

Unzip the download and open the app. It installs itself in Applications and reopens, ready for setup and automatic updates. If macOS asks for permission to install, approve it. Managed Macs may need an administrator’s approval.

  2. 02

    Say hello.

Follow the visual setup guide in Yap. It opens the right settings, shows which switch to turn on, and checks off Microphone and Accessibility when macOS confirms access. Update notifications are optional.

  3. 03

    Take it for a spin.

Wait for Speech recognition to show Ready in Overview. Open a note and place your cursor. Hold Fn, say a sentence, and release. Press Fn + Space to lock recording, then tap Fn to finish. Your words will land in your note.

  4. 04

On a Windows PC

The same Yap, on Windows.

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit

  1. 01

    Install.

Install it from the Microsoft Store: Microsoft signs it, so Windows installs it without a warning and keeps it up to date. Using the installer from this site instead? The installer is not code-signed yet. If your browser asks, choose Keep; if Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”, choose More info, then Run anyway. It installs for your account only, with no administrator rights.

  2. 02

    Say hello.

Allow the microphone in Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone, including Let desktop apps access your microphone. The first dictation downloads the speech model, about 0.7 GB, once.

  3. 03

    Take it for a spin.

Place your cursor in any text field. Hold Ctrl + Win, say a sentence and release. Press Space while holding Ctrl + Win to lock recording, then press Ctrl + Win again to finish.
