Question · Dictation on Windows
What is the voice typing launcher in Windows 11?
The voice typing launcher is a Windows 11 setting that lets you start voice typing quickly when your cursor is in a text box. You find it under the gear icon in the voice typing menu, next to automatic punctuation and profanity filtering.

The voice typing launcher is a setting in Windows 11's voice typing menu. Microsoft says it "lets you quickly use voice typing when you're in a text box" 1. In practice, it is a quick way to start dictating without first reaching for the keyboard shortcut.
The launcher is one of several voice typing settings, and Microsoft groups them under the gear icon. This answer covers what Microsoft documents, what it leaves out, and how the launcher differs from the microphone button and the shortcut. Our guide to Windows voice typing covers the whole feature.
The launcher is a quick start for text boxes
Voice typing can start only when the cursor is in a text box 2. The launcher is the setting that offers voice typing at that moment, so you do not have to remember the shortcut. Microsoft's description is one sentence, and its page does not describe what the launcher looks like, so expect the exact screen to differ between Windows 11 updates.
Find the launcher under the gear icon
Microsoft's steps for the settings are short:
- Press Windows key + H with the cursor in a text box.
- Select the gear icon on the voice typing flyout.
- Find Voice typing launcher in the list of settings.
Microsoft lists the gear menu's options as the voice typing launcher, Automatic punctuation, Filter profanity, Default microphone and Wait time before acting 1. Automatic punctuation inserts punctuation based on what you say 3, filter profanity lets you block or allow typing out profanity 4. Microsoft does not say whether the launcher is on by default, so check its switch alongside the others.
The launcher is not the microphone button on the touch keyboard
People often mix up two things: the launcher and the Microphone button on the touch keyboard. The button starts voice typing on a touch device, and Windows key + H starts it on a hardware keyboard 5. The launcher is a setting that offers voice typing in text boxes.
If you want the microphone off the touch keyboard, a third-party guide describes a checkbox named Show the voice typing mic button under Time & language, then Typing, then Touch keyboard 6. That checkbox controls the button only. The launcher and the shortcut are separate.
The launcher needs the same conditions as voice typing
The launcher does not change what voice typing needs. Voice typing still needs a working microphone, an internet connection and the cursor in a text box 7. If the launcher appears but nothing happens when you speak, go through the checks in our answer on the voice typing shortcut, starting with the connection and the microphone input level.
Turning the launcher off is optional
Look at the launcher's switch on your own PC before you decide. If the offer is more distracting than useful, switch it off in the gear menu. Voice typing still starts with Windows key + H. Third-party guides say the launcher can also be switched off from its own menu. We could not confirm that on a Microsoft page, so the gear menu is the route to use.
When the launcher is not the right tool
The launcher only helps with voice typing. If you want to control the PC by voice, open apps or click, Voice Access does more 8. Voice typing and Voice Access are separate tools, so use one at a time. Our guide to Voice Access in Windows 11 covers that tool, and our question on whether Windows has dictation compares the options.
What to do
- To start faster: leave the launcher on, click into a text box, and wait for the offer.
- To keep the menu simple: open the gear icon and switch the launcher off.
- To check everything at once: open the gear icon and review automatic punctuation and the other settings.
