Question · Dictation on Windows
Is Windows Voice Access any good?
Yes, for many Windows 11 users who want hands-free control or quick dictation, Voice Access is good, and it keeps working without internet after setup. It is weakest at moving around inside apps, editing dictated text and telling words apart from commands, and the reviews we found are from 2022 and 2023, so test it on your own work before you rely on it.

Yes, for many people Voice Access is good. As far as Microsoft's pages show, it costs nothing beyond Windows 11, it can control your PC 1, and it dictates short passages well. It is weakest in three places: moving around inside an app, editing dictated text, and words that can be read either as text or as a command. We could not find a measured accuracy test of Voice Access, so the verdict below rests on hands-on reviews and on what Microsoft says about the feature.
One reviewer rates Voice Access highest for controlling the PC
One Tom's Guide writer praised Voice Access most as a way to move around Windows. The writer called it the best voice navigation tool they had used on a PC 2. The same writer said Voice Access gave them a level of productivity they had not reached with other speech recognition software, including Dragon 3.
That is one writer's view in a 2022 column, not a controlled comparison. Read it as evidence that the tool can be productive for some people, not as proof that it beats every alternative for every user.
Dictating text works well, but it still makes mistakes
Dictating whole sentences is where the tool does best. A PCWorld writer dictated a full article in 2023 and reported that Windows does a good job transcribing speech 4. Microsoft is more cautious. It says Voice Access might make mistakes in recognizing dictated text 5.
Errors are easy to miss. In an in-lab study, participants missed identifying over 50 percent of speech recognition errors when they listened to the recognized text read back 6. So read the text on screen rather than trusting your ears, and check names, numbers and technical terms first.
Navigation and editing are the weak spots
The same PCWorld writer found that navigating within an application by voice was harder than dictating text, and sometimes felt nearly impossible 7. The writer also found that Windows confuses words that can be read as text, as an action or as punctuation 8. That is the situation where a dictated word such as a command name ends up doing something you did not intend.
| What you want to do | How well Voice Access does it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Control apps, windows and the desktop | Good for many users | One reviewer praised navigation, and the "Show numbers" overlay gives a fallback 9 |
| Dictate a draft or a message | Good, but check the screen | Transcription worked well in one 2023 test, and errors are easy to miss |
| Edit and correct text | Weak | One 2023 test found that words collide with commands, and moving within apps was hard |
| Work offline | Good | Recognition runs on the PC after setup |
It keeps working without internet, which matters for privacy and reliability
Voice Access uses on-device speech recognition, and Microsoft says it works even without the internet 10. That makes it a practical choice on a train, on a flaky connection or when you do not want speech sent to a server. The setup step is the one exception, and it needs internet once. The setup steps are in our guide to Voice Access in Windows 11.
Reviews are dated, and we found no Reddit threads we could cite
The two reviews are from September 2022 and July 2023. Microsoft has changed Voice Access since then, so a 2023 complaint may no longer apply, and a 2022 praise may describe an older version. We searched for Reddit discussions of Voice Access and could not open any we could cite, so this page does not rely on Reddit opinions. Microsoft's pages, the two reviews and one lab study are the evidence here.
What to do before you decide
- Turn Voice Access on from Settings, under Accessibility and Speech, following the setup guide.
- Dictate about ten minutes of your real writing, then count the errors on screen.
- Test the edits you need most, such as correcting, deleting and selecting a word. The Voice Access commands guide lists them.
- If it keeps missing you, check your microphone access and try a headset.
- If editing is your main job, compare the built-in tool with Windows voice typing and with dedicated dictation apps in the guide to dictation software for Windows. Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Windows, and its details are on the Windows page.
Voice Access is worth trying, since it comes with Windows 11 11, and a short test on your own text will show quickly whether it suits your work. To set it up, read whether you need to download Voice Access. If it keeps appearing when you start your PC, see why Voice Access keeps popping up.
