Question · Dictation on Windows
Why is dictation not working in Copilot?
Copilot dictation can fail when microphone access is blocked or Windows listens to the wrong microphone. Check those two settings first, then whether your account includes dictation.

Dictation in Copilot can fail for three reasons: microphone access is blocked, Windows is listening to the wrong microphone, or the account does not include dictation. Start with the microphone, since it is the quickest to check, then check the account. Microsoft's support pages we checked on 2026-10-16 have no troubleshooting section for Copilot dictation on its own, so the steps below are built from what Microsoft says about microphone access, account types and meetings.
Two cases are not faults. A personal account may not show dictation at all, and Copilot in a Teams meeting works from the meeting transcript, not from dictation.
Check microphone access in Copilot and in Windows
Copilot may ask for microphone access the first time you use voice, and you can change the setting later in your browser or device settings 1. If you declined that prompt, change the setting yourself, because dictation will not start until you do.
Windows has its own switches, and both must be on. Work through them in this order:
- Open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Microphone under App permissions.
- Confirm that microphone access is on. In Windows 11, apps can use the microphone only when it is turned on under Privacy & security, App permissions, Microphone 2.
- Confirm that Let desktop apps access your microphone is on. Desktop apps have their own setting 3.
If you use Copilot in a browser, the browser keeps its own microphone permission for each site, so check that as well.
Make sure Windows uses the microphone you are speaking into
Microsoft's voice typing troubleshooting starts by asking you to select the microphone you want to use in Settings, then System, then Sound, then Input 4. That guide is written for voice typing rather than Copilot, so treat it as a check of the same microphone, not as a Copilot fix. If several microphones are connected, a wrong default can cause silence, so confirm that the one you speak into is selected.
Check whether your account includes dictation
Microsoft's table of Copilot voice features lists dictation under work or school accounts 5. If you are on a personal account and cannot find the dictation button in the chat prompt box, the feature is not listed for that account. Changing a microphone setting will not fix it.
Teams meetings depend on transcription, not dictation
In a Teams meeting, Copilot needs a transcript to answer. To prompt Copilot about the meeting, or to see its conversation history after the meeting ends, live transcription must be on during the meeting 6. Turning Copilot on does not need transcription 7, so a meeting can have Copilot switched on and still have nothing to answer from.
The setting matters. Under During and after the meeting, stopping transcription also stops Copilot 8. If Teams Copilot gives no answer, check whether transcription is running before you check your microphone.
What to do when every check passes
Run the checks in order: microphone access in Copilot, microphone access in Windows, the selected input, the account type, then the meeting setting. If all of them pass and dictation still fails, restart the Copilot app and try again. On a managed work account, ask your administrator, because they may control which Copilot features are on.
If you need to write now, Windows voice typing writes into any text box with the cursor in it. The guide to Windows dictation not working lists its fixes in order.
