Question · Dictation on Windows
Why does Windows voice typing keep stopping?
Microsoft documents two ways voice typing stops: you say a stop command such as 'Stop listening', or you press the microphone button. Voice typing needs an internet connection, so a lost connection is a possible cause of a stop you did not ask for, although Microsoft does not describe that case. Microsoft's help page does not describe an automatic stop after silence, so if it stops with no command from you, check the internet connection and the microphone input first.

Windows voice typing stops in one of two documented ways. You say a stop command, or you press the microphone button. If it stops and you did neither, the connection or the microphone input is the likely place to look. Microsoft's help pages do not describe an automatic stop after a pause, or what happens to a session that loses its connection.
Voice typing stops when you say a command or press the button
Microsoft says you stop voice typing by saying a voice typing command such as "Stop listening," or by pressing the microphone button on the voice typing menu 1.
That makes a stop you did not ask for worth checking. If you did not say a stop phrase, look at whether a word in your sentence sounded like one, or whether the microphone button was pressed by accident, for example by a touch on a touch keyboard.
The wait time setting changes how a command is acted on
Voice typing has a wait time setting. Microsoft says it "allows users to choose how long Voice typing waits before carrying out a voice command" 2. Open the gear icon on the voice typing flyout to reach the voice typing settings 3, then find wait time under them.
Microsoft's help page does not give the default wait time, or say whether a longer wait prevents a dictated sentence from being cut off. Treat the setting as the place to adjust how quickly commands are acted on, and test it with a few sentences, not as a guaranteed fix.
Microsoft does not describe an automatic stop after silence
We read Microsoft's voice typing help page for this question. It has no description of voice typing ending by itself after a silence, and no timeout. Some third-party guides describe a short silence timeout, but Microsoft does not confirm it, so this guide does not rely on that claim. If the stop comes after a pause with no command, the documented causes below are the ones to check.
Lost internet or online speech recognition could stop it
Voice typing needs an internet connection, a working microphone and the cursor in a text box 4. It uses online speech recognition 5, so a dropped or unstable connection could stop it in the middle of a sentence. Check the network, and check that online speech recognition is on under Settings > Privacy & security > Speech 6.
Microsoft does not say what happens to a session that loses its connection, so the mid-sentence stop is an inference from the documented requirement, not a documented behavior.
Input level and a built-in microphone can drop words
If nothing appears in the text box after you speak, Microsoft says to adjust the input level of your microphone 7. If the wrong words appear, Microsoft suggests a headset or an external microphone if you use the built-in one 8.
What to do, in order
- Check whether you said a stop phrase or pressed the microphone button by accident.
- Check your internet connection, then confirm that online speech recognition is on.
- Adjust the microphone input level under Settings > System > Sound > Input.
- Use a headset or external microphone if you are on the built-in one.
- Adjust the wait time in the voice typing settings if commands are being acted on too early or too late.
- Restart the PC, sign in again, and test in Notepad.
It depends on how long you dictate
If you dictate for long periods, or need the tool to keep going without a connection, voice typing may not suit the job. Voice access works without an internet connection after its first setup 9, but the first-time setup needs the internet 10, so it is the built-in option for offline work once it is set up. Our guide to Voice access on Windows 11 explains the difference in more detail.
For the other ways voice typing fails, see our guide to fixing Windows dictation, why the Windows key + H is not working and why voice typing is stuck on initializing. Our overview of dictation on Windows links every guide in the series.
Terms used here are defined in our glossary entries for voice typing, online speech recognition and Voice Access.
