Question · Dictation on Windows
Can you dictate from an iPhone to a Windows PC?
No built-in feature sends iPhone dictation to a Windows PC. Two routes can work today: dictate into a Word document on the iPhone that syncs to the PC, or dictate through a remote session to the PC, which you should test first. Apple's clipboard bridge to Windows is not available yet.

Not with a built-in feature. Dictation on an iPhone works anywhere you can type 1, and nothing sends that text to a Windows PC unless you move it yourself. Two routes can work today, at different costs: dictate into a Word document on the iPhone and open it on the PC, or dictate through a remote session to the PC, which you have to test first. Apple's clipboard bridge to Windows is still in development.
Apple's Universal Clipboard stays between Apple devices
Apple's Universal Clipboard copies content between devices only when both are signed in to the same Apple Account 2. A Windows PC is not an Apple device, so the feature does not reach it, and text copied on the iPhone cannot land on the PC this way.
A clipboard bridge for Windows is coming, but not yet
Right now, an app can read an iPhone's clipboard only while it runs in the foreground, and the user grants access each time 3. That blocks a PC app from syncing in the background. Apple says introducing cross-device copy and paste is a significant engineering effort, with the work expected to be complete by fall 2027 4.
The first version may be narrower. MacRumors expects the feature to be limited to the European Union at first, although Apple could release it worldwide 5. The timing comes from MacRumors' report of Apple's response. We found no Apple or European Commission document that sets these dates, so treat them as a plan that can change.
Route one: dictate into Word on the iPhone, then open it on the PC
Microsoft's Dictate article for Word Mobile covers Word on iPhone 6, and dictation there may also depend on a Microsoft 365 subscription. If the Dictate button is missing in Word Mobile, Microsoft says to make sure you are signed in with an active Microsoft 365 subscription 7. With that in place:
- Open the document in Word on your iPhone, and start dictation with the Dictate button.
- Dictate the text, then read it through before you close the document.
- Save the document to OneDrive, or to another cloud folder that the PC can open.
- On the PC, open the same file in Word.
The text reaches the PC through the cloud folder that syncs the file, not through dictation itself. That is the difference between this route and a bridge.
Route two: sync through iCloud Drive with iCloud for Windows
If your dictation app saves text files to iCloud Drive, iCloud for Windows can bring those files to the PC. Apple says the app lets you access your photos, videos, mail, calendar, files and more on a Windows PC 8. Apple's page lists the Windows 11 and Outlook versions that the latest release needs, so check them on the page before you download the app from the Microsoft Store.
Apple's page does not say how quickly a file syncs, so test with one short file before you rely on this route for longer work.
Route three: dictate through a remote session to the PC
Microsoft's Windows App documentation says you can redirect the microphone of your local device into a remote session 9. In principle, audio from the phone's microphone then reaches software running on the PC, so the PC's own dictation tool could receive it. Microsoft's page does not say whether Windows voice typing or Word's Dictate works through a redirected microphone. Open a session, dictate a sentence, and check that the words appear in the PC's document before you depend on it.
Other routes: Phone Link and third-party apps
We could not confirm from Microsoft's current pages whether Phone Link carries dictated text, so we have not counted it as a route and do not recommend it for this.
Some third-party apps claim to pass iPhone dictation to a companion program on Windows. We did not test any of them. The reviews we found were mostly older and in other languages, so read each app's privacy policy first to see where your text goes.
Which route to choose
| Route | What you need | Status today |
|---|---|---|
| Word on the iPhone, opened on the PC | A Microsoft 365 subscription and a cloud folder that both devices reach | Possible; you handle the sync, so test one file first |
| iCloud Drive with iCloud for Windows | iCloud for Windows on the PC | Test with one file first |
| Remote session to the PC | A remote app with microphone redirection, and a PC that is on and reachable | Test it; not documented for dictation |
| Apple clipboard for Windows | Nothing yet | Expected by fall 2027; MacRumors expects EU first |
| Phone Link and third-party apps | Depends on the app | Not verified here |
If you would rather dictate on the PC itself, the guide to voice typing on Windows covers the setup, and the guide to dictation in Windows apps shows which tool to use in each app. Our overview of dictation on Windows lists every guide on the subject. For the Word side of this question, see why Word dictation is not working on Windows 11, and for the phone route into Word, dictating into Word on a phone or iPad. If your target is a Mac rather than a PC, dictating from an iPhone to a Mac covers that case.
