Calculated from the rows
Every statistic is calculated by code from the rows above. Open one to see the exact values it summarises.
How this dataset is built
- What counts as a row
- Retention periods and human-review rules that a voice assistant, dictation feature or transcription service states in its own privacy policy or support documentation, dated. A period without a fixed number of days (until you delete it) is kept as the source's words.
- What does not
- News reports of practices the company has not documented, unless the company confirmed them.
- How rows are found and checked
- Rows come from the facts already cited across the library and from each company's current privacy and support pages, read on the date shown, and re-read by the pipeline to catch changes.
- What the data cannot tell you
- Policies change, differ by country and account type, and describe defaults; your own settings may differ.
The search record

official pages and works read by a researcher

kept, with their figures checked
Every work and page screened (10: 8 kept)
Kept, 6 figuresApple Siri and Dictation
Apple's Siri, Dictation and Privacy and Improve Siri and Dictation pages state a two-year retention period, an opt-in audio review by Apple employees, a default review of a transcript subset, and no default audio storage.
Kept, 7 figuresGoogle Assistant and Gemini Apps voice activity
Google's Gemini Apps activity and privacy help give an 18-month default auto-delete, 72 hours with Keep Activity off, and human review with up to three years retention; its voice and audio activity help says audio is saved only if you opt in and that trained reviewers analyze saved samples.
Kept, 4 figuresAmazon Alexa voice recordings
Amazon's Alexa privacy announcement and Alexa help page give 3 or 18 month auto-delete options, 30 days for transcripts after inactivity, deletion after processing when recordings are not saved, and a statement that humans review an extremely small sample of interactions by default; no rate is given.
Kept, 10 figuresMicrosoft voice data (Windows online speech recognition, Copilot voice)
Microsoft's support pages give dated retention periods and review rules for Copilot Voice and contributed voice clips, read 2026-10: 48 hours for Copilot Voice audio (work or school), 18 months default for conversation activity, two years for contributed clips, and employee and vendor review only for clips a person contributes.
Not keptSamsung Bixby
No Bixby-specific period or review rule: Samsung's US privacy policy says it keeps recordings of voice commands on its servers but gives no period for them, and its only retention clause (kept only as long as necessary for the purpose) covers all personal information, not voice; the Bixby support pages describe use and deletion of the account, not retention.
Not keptMeta AI voice
Meta's notices state figures (stored voice recordings kept up to one year; false-wake recordings deleted within 90 days), but no verbatim English quote could be checked: the notice pages return a cookie-consent shell to the fetch, and the Dutch copy holds the text, so the figures were seen only in search summaries and a translated fetch. Retry with a browser-rendered English copy of the Meta AI on
Kept, 3 figuresOpenAI ChatGPT voice mode
OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice help article gives dated periods: clips from Live and Advanced Voice kept 30 days, deleted with a chat within 30 days, and Standard voice audio deleted after transcription, with no fixed number. No human review rule is stated for voice; the training opt-in is not a retention period.
Kept, 2 figuresOtter.ai
Otter's privacy and security page gives a 30-day deletion of trashed conversations, and its privacy policy (June 16, 2026) keeps personal information as long as necessary, with no number. The policy's data labeling providers are already a fact in the library; no human review rule is stated for the account owner's own recordings.
Kept, 2 figuresZoom transcription
Zoom's support article gives 30 days in the Trash for deleted cloud recordings, when the setting is on, and its AI whitepaper gives an admin option to keep meeting transcripts for zero days. Zoom's 30-day support-and-debugging retention for AI Companion was not found on a fetched page, so it is left out; no human review rule is stated.
Kept, 3 figuresMicrosoft Teams transcription
Microsoft Learn's admin article gives the default expiry for Teams meeting recordings and transcripts (120 days), the admin maximum (99999 days) and the never-expire option. It states no human-review rule for Teams transcripts, so review is Not stated.
The whole method, from search to calculation, is on the research data page.
