Question · Dictation on Windows
Does Windows voice typing work in every app?
Not guaranteed. Microsoft says voice typing can start only when the cursor is in a text box, but it does not name the apps one by one. Test each app you use with a short sentence. Expect limits or no documentation in password fields, admin prompts, full-screen games and some remote sessions.

Windows voice typing can start only in an app where the cursor is in a text box, which is the rule Microsoft documents 1. That does not mean it works in every app with certainty, because Microsoft does not list the apps, and some places block it or leave it undocumented. Test the apps you use most before you depend on dictation in them.
The rule is the text box, not the app
Microsoft says voice typing can start only when the cursor is in a text box 1. It also needs a working microphone and an internet connection 2. So the test is whether the app has a box where the cursor sits and takes typed text. Browsers, email programs, chat apps and word processors all have such boxes. A window with no text field, such as a media player, has nothing for voice typing to write into.
The internet requirement applies in every app. If the network is down, dictation fails in your browser just as it does in your word processor, so check the connection before you blame the app.
Microsoft does not list supported apps, so test each one
Microsoft does not publish a list of supported apps, so "works in every app" is a claim you have to check yourself. Open each app you use, click into a text box, press Windows key + H 3, and say one short sentence. Check that the words appear, that punctuation looks right, and that the text lands in the right box. Do this for the apps where you write most, such as your browser, email program, chat app and word processor.
Word is a useful example. Microsoft's pages for voice typing do not name Word, so test it there even though the same rule should apply. For a comparison with Word's own Dictate button, read Word's Dictate or Windows voice typing.
Some places block dictation or leave it undocumented
Some cases are documented, and some are not. The documented ones are the ones to plan around.
- Voice Access running. If Voice Access is running and you press Windows key + H, voice typing does not start, and Windows shows a message telling you to use Voice Access instead 4. Close Voice Access, or dictate with it, before you expect Windows key + H to work.
- Microphone access. Voice typing needs microphone access, which you turn on under Privacy & security > Microphone 5. If nothing starts, check this setting before you check the app.
- Password and PIN fields. Microsoft says Fluid dictation is automatically disabled in secure fields such as passwords or PINs 6. That note covers Fluid dictation only. Microsoft does not say what plain voice typing does in those fields, so test with a harmless sentence and never dictate a real password.
- Administrator prompts. Microsoft says only trusted processes running as SYSTEM are allowed on the secure desktop used for these prompts 7. Microsoft does not say whether voice typing works there. Enter credentials with the keyboard.
- Remote desktop sessions. Microsoft's Azure Virtual Desktop guidance says the RDP property audiocapturemode:i:1 enables audio input redirection 8. Confirm that redirection is on in your session, then test voice typing inside it, because Microsoft's module does not say whether it works over a redirected microphone.
- Full-screen games. We found no Microsoft documentation for voice typing in full-screen games. Test the specific game before you rely on it.
What to do when an app does not take dictation
- Test a short sentence in the app with the cursor in a text box.
- If Windows key + H does nothing, check that Voice Access is closed and that the microphone is allowed.
- If the app is Word, try Word's own Dictate button, which needs a Microsoft 365 subscription 9.
- If the app still does not take dictation, use the keyboard, or try a third-party voice keyboard. Our voice keyboard question compares the options.
