Question · Dictation on Windows
Is Windows dictation any good?
Windows dictation is good for short, everyday text in a quiet room, and it is built in. It is less certain for long documents and specialist words, which we found no test of, and for private text if you use Win+H voice typing, which needs the internet. Microsoft says Voice Access might make mistakes recognizing dictated text, so test it on your own voice before you rely on it.

Yes, for short texts, with caveats. Windows dictation is built in 1, and it suits emails, notes and first drafts when you speak clearly into a close microphone. Its accuracy is less certain as the text gets longer, the words get more unusual or the room gets noisier, and we found no test of Windows on those points. Whether it is good for you depends on those three things, which is why a short test on your own writing tells you more than any review.

Win+H voice typing needs a microphone, a connection and a text box
Win+H voice typing works in a text box, but only with a working microphone, an internet connection and the cursor in the box 2. When that holds, you can dictate messages and notes straight into the box. If it enters the wrong words on a built-in microphone, Microsoft suggests a headset or external microphone 3.
Voice Access is the fuller tool. It is available in Windows 11, version 22H2 or later 4, and it can edit text and control the PC, not only write it 5. Microsoft says Voice Access might make mistakes in recognizing dictated text 6, so test it on your own words.
Error rates in one 2017 study were far higher with a distant microphone
A 2017 study of a research speech recognizer gives two very different numbers, though the conditions differ in more than the microphone. Close-talking sentences recorded in a studio had a word error rate of 3.7% 7. The same kind of recognizer, with one ceiling microphone several meters from the speakers in a real apartment, had a word error rate of 12.0% 8.
Those numbers come from a research system in 2017, not from Windows, so they do not measure your PC. They show why the microphone deserves a test. Use a headset or a close microphone, dictate in a quiet room, and if the built-in microphone gets words wrong, try the headset Microsoft suggests.
Independent evidence on Windows dictation is thin
A 2024 study of common automatic speech recognition services concluded that, despite recent improvements, they lack reliability in accuracy 9. Its abstract does not name Windows voice typing or Voice Access, so read it as a warning about the category, not a verdict on Windows.
We did not find a controlled test from 2025 or 2026 that runs Windows voice typing against a current product on the same audio. We have not counted roundup articles as evidence. Forum threads on Reddit are useful for hearing about problems, but they are anecdotes, and we have not used them as evidence here.
The gap that matters is speed of correction, not just speed of speech
Speech is quick, but corrections take time. A 2022 study of mobile text entry found that speech recognition was faster than typing, while typing had the lower error rate 10. A fast first draft with many errors can take longer to finish than a slower draft with few. Time the whole job, corrections included, before you decide.
What to do: a short test before you rely on it
- Dictate 500 words of your real work, with the microphone and room you will use every day.
- Include your hardest words, such as names, product codes and abbreviations, and note which ones come out wrong.
- Count the corrections and time the whole job, not only the speaking.
- Check the privacy setting for the feature you use. Voice typing is online 11, so do not dictate sensitive text into it until you have read Microsoft's terms for that feature.
- Repeat with an offline option if the text must stay on the PC. Voice Access works offline after setup 12, and our free dictation options cover the rest.
If the result is good for your everyday text, Windows dictation is good enough. If it fails on your vocabulary, look for a custom vocabulary feature before you pay for anything else. Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows, so weigh our view with that in mind, and run the same test on it.
