Question · Dictation on Windows
What is the best speech recognition software for Windows?
For most people on Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, the best speech recognition software is the built-in Voice Access, with Win+H voice typing for quick text. Choose a paid or on-device app when accuracy on your own vocabulary, or keeping audio on the PC, matters more than cost. The studies we found do not show a clear winner, so test the candidates on your own voice.

There is no single best speech recognition software for Windows. The right choice depends on your Windows version, your microphone and room, and whether your audio may leave the PC. For most people the starting point is the built-in Voice Access on Windows 11 version 22H2 or later. Pay for an app or use a local model only when a test on your own words shows a gap that matters to you.
Start with the built-in tool your Windows version supports
Voice Access is available in Windows 11, version 22H2 or later 1. Our Voice Access guide covers setup. If your PC runs an older Windows version, or you only need quick text, Win+H voice typing is the other built-in option 2. It needs an internet connection for every use 3.

Accuracy results vary, so the winner depends on the test
Published results do not settle which engine is most accurate. In one German interview studied in 2024, Whisper reached above 70 percent on the study's word accuracy measure, while Dragon was below 5 percent 4. That is one interview, measured one way, so it shows how much the result can depend on the speaker and the test, not which product is better in general.
A 2025 pilot in neurosurgery is closer to a fair test. Three physicians dictated ten operative reports, and the mean word error rate counting all errors was 1.75 percent for a modified Whisper-based model 5 and 1.54 percent for Dragon Medical One 6. The authors found the difference was not statistically significant, with p = 0.080 7. In that pilot, the two were close, and the small sample is a limit.
Word error rate (WER) is the standard way to score these tests. A lower number means fewer words differ from a human transcript, but a score on one speaker and one set of recordings does not carry over to your own work.
Local models keep audio on your PC
Some apps run the recognizer on your computer. Handy, a free open-source app 8, says transcription happens on your own computer without sending any information to the cloud 9. Setup takes more effort than with a commercial app, and the model you choose affects speed and accuracy.
Local does not mean accurate on its own. Results still depend on the microphone and the room. A 2017 study with a single ceiling microphone several meters from the speakers, in a real apartment and using real recordings, measured a word error rate of 12.0 percent 10. Test with the microphone you will really use, since the microphone can change the result.
It depends on five things
- Windows version: Voice Access needs Windows 11, version 22H2 or later 1. Below that, look at Dragon or a third-party app.
- Privacy: if audio must stay on the PC, choose an app that says it processes locally, and check which setting sends audio to the cloud.
- Vocabulary: names, product codes and medical or legal terms are the words to test first. Look for a custom vocabulary feature.
- Control: dictation alone and control of every program are different needs. Voice Access offers both 11. Dragon supports custom commands 12 and has a steep learning curve 13.
- Cost: built-in tools come with Windows 2, and paid tools charge differently, so compare the first year.
What to do
- Turn on the built-in tool that matches your Windows version, and use it for a week on real work.
- Dictate 500 words with the microphone you will use every day. Include 20 hard terms, and note which ones fail.
- Count the corrections, and time the whole job, including the editing.
- Read the privacy and storage setting of any app you consider, and note the default.
- Pay only for a gap you measured. If the built-in tool gets your words right, you do not need to pay.
Another option is a paid or cloud app for everyday writing, which is covered in the question on alternatives to Windows dictation.
