Question · Dictation on Windows
Is Windows voice typing as good as Dragon?
For short, everyday writing, Windows voice typing is built in and often good enough. Dragon Professional 16 supports custom words, commands and auto-texts, and it costs about $686 to $699 per license. We found no independent test that runs both on the same audio, so the honest answer is to test both on your own text before you pay.

Not for every job. Windows voice typing comes with Windows and handles short, everyday text well enough for many people 1. Dragon Professional 16 is a different kind of tool. It supports custom words, commands and auto-texts 2, and it costs about $686 to $699 per license 3. Which one is good enough depends on what you dictate and how much you would lose if it made mistakes.
For the wider comparison, see our guide to the best dictation software for Windows. For whether the built-in tool is good at all, see is Windows dictation any good. For the whole subject, see dictation on Windows.
Dragon adds custom words, commands and shared licenses
Dragon supports custom words, commands and auto-texts, and its volume licensing lets an organization share them across users 2. Windows Voice Access also does both commanding and dictation, so it can control every task on the PC, not only write text 4.
Voice typing is simpler. It types what you say into a text box, and it does not try to run your whole desktop. If you only need text, that simplicity is a benefit.
The accuracy claim comes from Nuance, not from a neutral test
Nuance says Dragon Professional v16 lets employees dictate documents 3 times faster than typing, with up to 99 percent recognition accuracy 5. That is the company's own figure, and Nuance publishes no method for it, so treat it as a claim to test, not as a measured result.
We found no comparable accuracy figure from Microsoft for Windows voice typing, so the only way to compare the two is on your own text.
Connection and privacy are a real difference
Voice typing needs an internet connection every time you use it 6. Voice Access works without internet once it is set up, and Microsoft says so directly 7. If the text must stay on the PC, that alone can decide the question. Dragon's own licensing terms and its installation requirements are the place to check whether your version works offline for your use. Confirm that with the vendor before you rely on it.
The price gap is large, and the reviews are mixed
A US reseller, CDW, lists a one-user Dragon Professional v16 license at $685.99 3. TechRadar's 2023 review gives a one-time fee of $699 for each license 8. The two prices differ by a reseller and a date, so check the price you are offered. Windows voice typing comes with Windows 1, so there is no separate price to compare.
TechRadar's review also lists three drawbacks of Dragon Professional 16: it uses computing resources, it is expensive and it has a steep learning curve 9. Those are the costs to weigh against the gain in control.
What we could not find: a same-audio test
We did not find a controlled test from 2025 or 2026 that runs Windows voice typing and Dragon on the same recordings and reports error rates for both. We have not counted roundup articles as evidence, so a fair answer has to come from your own test.
How to decide: run both on your own text
- Choose 500 words of real work, including the names and terms you use most.
- Dictate it into Windows voice typing, then into Dragon or the trial version, using the same microphone and room.
- Count the corrections for each, and note the time to a finished text, not only the time spent speaking.
- Price the gap. If Dragon saves an hour a week, a one-time license may pay for itself. If it saves a few minutes a month, the built-in tool is the better choice.
