Question · Dictation on Windows
What is the best alternative to Windows dictation?
The best alternative depends on what Windows dictation gets wrong for you. For offline use with audio kept on the PC, try a free local app such as Handy; for everyday dictation, a cloud app works, but its audio is sent to remote servers. For more control of your PC by voice, Dragon Professional is the paid option to test.

There is no single best alternative to Windows dictation. Start from the problem. Win+H voice typing needs an internet connection 1, so an offline need points one way. Voice Access needs Windows 11 22H2 or later 2, so an older PC points another way. Accuracy, privacy and cost each lead to a different tool. Pick the alternative that fixes your problem, then test it on your own words.
If you need offline dictation and audio kept on the PC, try a local app
Handy is a free, open-source speech-to-text application 3. Its README says transcription happens on your own computer without sending any information to the cloud 4. It is listed as working on Windows, macOS and Linux 5.
Local apps can need more setup, so read the install steps and the model list before you commit to a workflow. Superwhisper is a commercial option that says it works offline 6. Its Pro plan is $84.99 per year on an annual plan 7. Check which features its Windows version includes before you buy.
If you accept cloud processing, cloud apps are an option with a privacy trade-off
Cloud apps send your speech to remote servers for transcription. Wispr Flow says it deletes your audio as soon as it has been transcribed, unless you have turned on its Dictation cloud storage setting 8. Aqua Voice says that with Privacy Mode turned off, it may store transcript data on its servers to improve the product 9.
These are policies you can change, so check the setting you are using, not only the default. A cloud app is a poor alternative if the text must stay on the PC during dictation.
If you need more control of your PC by voice, Dragon is the paid alternative
Dragon Professional is the paid product to test when you need more than dictation. Nuance's release notes list MouseGrid on up to three monitors among the new features of Dragon Professional 16 10. A one-user license is listed by CDW at $685.99 for Dragon Professional 16 11. CDW lists this as a license price, so ask the vendor about upgrade and renewal fees, and compare the first two years, not the sticker price alone. Our Dragon alternatives question covers the other options with voice commands, and the free alternative to Dragon covers the free ones.
It depends on your Windows version, budget and privacy rules
- Older PC, Windows 10 or below 22H2: Voice Access is not available. On Windows 10 it is not offered at all 12, so a local app or Dragon is the realistic choice.
- Tight budget: start with the free local app, and add a paid tool only for a gap you measured.
- Confidential notes or client data: prefer a local app, and read the privacy page for the mode you use. Some apps send audio to the cloud only when you pick a cloud model.
- Heavy daily use of long documents: test the candidates on a full working day, because free-tier limits and model speed show up over time.
What to do
- Write down the one thing Windows dictation gets wrong for you, such as offline use, accuracy, editing or control.
- Choose one alternative that fixes that problem. Do not compare ten apps.
- Dictate 500 words of real work with your own microphone, and count the corrections.
- Read the privacy and storage setting, and note the default.
- Add up the cost for 12 months, including any free-tier limit you will reach.
Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows, so weigh it with the same test as the others. You can see downloads and pricing on our site.
