Dictation on phones and tablets
Dictation and Voice to Text on iPhone and Android
Every iPhone, iPad, Android phone, Samsung Galaxy and Apple Watch already has free voice typing in its keyboard: turn it on once, tap the microphone key and speak, and in many languages the speech is turned into text on the device itself, even with no internet. Speaking is about three times faster than typing on a phone keyboard, and when voice typing fails the cause is often a setting, a permission, a swapped keyboard or a missing language download, not the microphone.

Guides in this topic
Each guide takes one part of the subject in depth.
- How to Use Dictation on iPhone (Voice to Text)Dictation is built into the iPhone keyboard, so there is nothing to install. Turn it on under Settings, General, then Keyboard, tap the microphone key and speak. In many languages the speech becomes text on the phone itself, with no internet connection.
- iPhone Dictation Not Working? How to Fix ItMost iPhone dictation failures come from a switched-off Dictation setting, a language or network condition that is not met, a keyboard or microphone permission problem, or a Screen Time restriction. Match what you see to the matching check below, work in order, and reset all settings only after a restart.
- Voice Typing on Android: How to Use Talk to TextOn Android, talk to text is the microphone key at the top of the Gboard keyboard. Tap a text field, tap Microphone, wait for Speak now and talk. Samsung Galaxy phones also have their own voice input, and a 2025 report says offline voice typing works on all devices, but read dictated text before you send it.
- Talk to Text on Samsung Galaxy: How to Use ItSamsung Galaxy phones have two built-in talk to text engines, Samsung voice input and Google Voice Typing. Tap the microphone on the keyboard to start, tap it again to stop, and choose the engine under the Voice input setting.
- Voice Typing Not Working on Android: How to Fix ItWhen Android voice typing fails, check four things in order: that voice typing is switched on in your keyboard, that the keyboard and the phone both allow the microphone, that battery saving is not restricting the keyboard, and that the offline speech pack and keyboard are complete. The first two checks are quick, and they appear near the top of the troubleshooting guides we read.
- Best Dictation Apps for iPhone and AndroidFor most people the free keyboards are enough: Apple Dictation on iPhone processes speech on the phone in many languages, and Gboard voice typing on Android works offline once a language is downloaded. Pay for a separate app only for long dictation, AI cleanup, specialist vocabulary or a privacy need the keyboard does not meet.
- iPhone Dictation Commands: Punctuation, Emoji, EditingOn iPhone you say the name of a mark to type it, use words such as Cap and New paragraph to format, and say emoji names in some languages. Editing by voice (select, delete, undo) is documented only for U.S. English on iPhone 12 and later, except iPhone SE.
- Voice Typing in WhatsApp and Messaging AppsDictating into WhatsApp uses the microphone key on your phone's keyboard, which is a different control from the microphone that records a voice message. WhatsApp can turn voice messages you receive into text once you turn on its transcripts, and Siri or Google Assistant can send a text by voice.
- Dictation on Apple Watch: How to Use and Fix ItTap the input button at the bottom right of any text field, choose Dictation, then speak. On watchOS 27, Apple lists on-device dictation for 14 language variants, and the watch takes its dictation language from the iPhone keyboard for each app. When dictation stops, restart the watch and its iPhone, then check the Dictation setting and the keyboard languages on both devices.
- Dictation on iPad and Android TabletsOn an iPad, dictation is Apple's built-in feature: turn on Enable Dictation in Settings, tap the dictation key on the onscreen keyboard and speak. Android tablets use the same voice keyboards as Android phones, Gboard or Samsung's keyboard. A hardware keyboard, Apple Pencil and Voice Control change how you start and edit dictation on a tablet.
- Dictation Languages on iPhone and AndroidOn iPhone, each keyboard you add also brings its dictation language, and the Globe key switches between keyboards. On Android, voice typing languages are set inside Gboard or Samsung Keyboard, and only some newer Pixel phones switch languages on the fly. Apple's iOS Dictation list does not include Hindi, so Hindi dictation on iPhone is not on that list.
- Offline Voice Typing on iPhone and AndroidYes, for many languages. iPhone dictation is processed on the phone and needs no internet connection, while Android offline voice typing depends on the phone, the keyboard and the language. An airplane mode test shows whether dictation runs on your phone.
- Live Transcribe, Live Captions and Voice ControlPhones include speech-to-text tools that go beyond the keyboard. Live Transcribe captions conversations on Android, Live Captions captions audio and conversations on iPhone, and Voice Control and Voice Access let you run an iPhone or Android by voice. Calls are the hard case: Google names only Pixel phones for call captions, and Apple's page does not list ordinary phone calls.
You do not need to install anything to dictate on a phone. Every iPhone and iPad has Apple Dictation in its keyboard, every Android phone has Google voice typing in Gboard, Samsung Galaxy phones add a second engine called Samsung voice input, and Apple Watch has a microphone button in every text field. You turn the feature on once, tap the microphone key and talk. On an iPhone, Apple says Dictation is processed on the device in many languages and that no internet connection is required 1. On Android, Google's 2019 Gboard recognizer is about 80 MB and works while the phone is offline, first on Pixel phones in American English 2.
The reason to bother is speed. In a controlled study on an iPhone, English text entered by speech reached 153 words per minute, against 52 on the built-in keyboard 3 4. When it fails, the cause is usually a setting rather than the microphone hardware. It is a switch that is off, a permission that was refused, another keyboard that is active, or a language file that is not on the phone. This page gives the whole subject in one place and links to a guide for every part of it.

Speaking is faster than typing on a phone
The most cited measurement comes from a Stanford and University of Washington study. Participants entered short messages on an iPhone by speech and with the iOS keyboard. Speech was 2.93 times faster in English, 153 against 52 words per minute 3, and in Mandarin Chinese it reached 123 words per minute against 43 on the Pinyin keyboard 5 6. At the English speeds in that study, typing 1,000 words on the phone keyboard takes about 12.7 minutes longer than speaking them, before any editing 7.
The 52 words per minute in that study is a laboratory figure for short messages. A separate online study of 37,370 volunteers entering text on mobile devices in a web-based task measured an average of 36.2 words per minute, with 2.3 percent uncorrected errors 8. People who typed with both thumbs, over 74 percent of the volunteers, were faster than those using one thumb or an index finger 9. The two studies used different tasks and people, so their figures are not directly comparable.
Speed is not the whole story, and the authors are careful about it. Speech produced fewer errors during entry (a 5.30 percent corrected error rate against 11.22 percent for the keyboard) but left slightly more errors in the final text, 1.30 percent against 0.79 percent 10. In plain terms, you correct less while you talk, but you must still proofread. The authors also note that results outside the laboratory still need study 11, and that the best speech recognition has greatly improved compared with earlier systems 12. Our guide to dictation versus typing and the typing speed overview go further into the research.
iPhone and iPad: one switch in Settings, then the microphone key
On an iPhone you open Settings > General > Keyboard, turn on Enable Dictation and confirm the prompt 13. After that, a microphone key appears on the keyboard in every text field. Tap it, speak, and tap again to stop. Dictation also stops by itself after 30 seconds without speech 14.
Two details make iPhone dictation better than people expect. First, the keyboard stays open during dictation, so you can switch between touch and voice in the same message 15: speak a paragraph, tap to fix one word, and carry on speaking. Second, in supported languages the iPhone inserts commas, periods and question marks as you speak, without a spoken command 16. If you prefer to control punctuation yourself, you can turn it off under Settings > General > Keyboard > Auto-Punctuation 17.
Newer software changes the engine. Apple says that with Apple Intelligence in iOS 27, iPhone dictation uses an on-device model to improve spelling, punctuation and capitalization, in English on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air or later 18. That note covers only English and the iPhone models it names.
The full walkthrough, with the menu names for each iOS version, is in our guide to dictation on iPhone. The questions people ask most are answered separately:

iPad is the same feature with a bigger screen
iPad dictation is the same Apple Dictation as on the iPhone, and Android tablets use the same voice keyboards as Android phones. What changes is how you start and edit: an attached hardware keyboard, split-screen multitasking and the Apple Pencil all alter the workflow, and a tablet suits long documents better than a phone does. Our guide to dictation on iPad and Android tablets covers the differences, including how Word, Google Docs and Pages handle dictation. Microsoft says Dictation in Microsoft 365 needs a microphone and a reliable internet connection 19, which is worth knowing before you plan to dictate a Word document on a train. See dictating in Word on a phone or iPad, why dictation is not working on an iPad and the best dictation app for iPad.
Android: the microphone key in Gboard is Google voice typing
On almost every Android phone, talk to text is the microphone at the top of Gboard. Google says you voice type by tapping a text field, tapping the microphone and speaking when you see "Speak now" 20. The first time, Android asks for a recording permission with three choices: While using app, Only this time or Don't allow 21. Choosing the last one blocks voice typing until you change the permission in the phone's app settings, so the fix is a settings change, not a repair 21.
Google voice typing used to need a data connection because the recognizer was too large for a phone: Google said its traditional server-side recognizer used a search graph of almost 2 GB 22. In 2019 Google announced an end-to-end, all-neural, on-device recognizer to power speech input in Gboard 23, and it was small enough, about 80 MB, to run on the phone 2. A history of the keyboard dates the addition of offline voice recognition to March 2019 24. The speech engine itself is a separate app, Speech Services by Google, which matters when you troubleshoot.
Voice typing works in any app that shows the keyboard. Google Docs also has its own voice typing under Tools > Voice typing in a supported browser 25, a different route to the same Google engine. Our guide to voice typing on Android gives exact steps for Pixel and other phones, and the common questions have their own pages:
- Where is voice typing on Android?

Samsung Galaxy phones have two voice engines to choose from
Samsung says Galaxy phones and tablets have two built-in voice-to-text apps, Samsung voice input and Google Voice Typing, and that Samsung voice input works only with the Samsung Keyboard 26. So on a Galaxy the question is not "does it have voice typing" but "which of the two is doing the work". If you have replaced Samsung Keyboard with Gboard, you get Google's engine; if you use Samsung Keyboard, you can pick either.
Offline use follows the same pattern as on other Android phones: Samsung's keyboard settings have an Offline voice input section where you install offline language packs 27. The Samsung guide explains which languages work offline. The guide to talk to text on Samsung Galaxy covers where the voice button sits in each One UI version, how to switch engines, and how Galaxy AI turns a Voice Recorder recording into text through Transcript Assist 28, a feature that is only on select Galaxy models 29. Compare the built-in voice keyboards side by side
The built-in tools are similar in what they do and different in where the settings live. This table uses only what the platform makers document.
| Apple Dictation (iPhone, iPad) | Gboard voice typing (Android) | Samsung voice input (Galaxy) | Apple Watch | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How to start | Microphone key on the keyboard | Microphone at the top of Gboard | Voice button in Samsung Keyboard | Microphone button in a text field |
| One-time setup | Enable Dictation in Settings > General > Keyboard 13 | Allow the recording permission 21 | Works with Samsung Keyboard only 26 | Covered in the Apple Watch guide |
| Works offline | In many languages 1 | On all devices, per a 2025 report 30 | With offline language packs 27 | Not stated by Apple |
| Punctuation | Automatic, or say the mark 16 | Covered in the Android guide | Covered in the Samsung guide | Covered in the Apple Watch guide |
| Cost | Free | Free | Free | Free |
The "Not stated by Apple" cell is deliberate. Apple's watchOS guide says only that dictation is not available in all languages 31; it does not say whether the watch or the cloud does the recognizing.
Say punctuation, formatting and emoji and the phone types them
Voice typing is faster when you know a few spoken commands. On iPhone you add punctuation by saying the name of the mark, for example "exclamation point" 32. Apple's list includes period, comma, exclamation point, question mark, dollar sign and parentheses 33. Saying "new line" or "new paragraph" adds a line break 34, "Cap" capitalizes the next word 35, and you can spell a word by saying its letters, which helps with names 36. Not every command exists in every language: the "No space" command, for instance, is not available for all of them 37.
Apple Watch has a small command set of its own. You can say emoji by name 38, tap a dictated word and say a different one to replace it, and double-tap the screen to select all 39. Gboard has its own spoken commands, listed in the question on Gboard voice typing commands.
The complete table of commands, including emoji and editing, is in the iPhone dictation commands guide. Questions with their own pages:

Many languages run on the phone, and the setup differs by platform
On iPhone, dictation languages follow your keyboards: add a keyboard in a language and dictation in that language becomes available, and you switch between them from the keyboard. On Android, the languages are chosen inside the voice keyboard itself (Gboard or Samsung Keyboard). Which languages work offline differs by platform and language, and mixing two languages in one sentence works only in some setups. On Apple Watch, Apple's guide says that if you have set up more than one language, you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen to switch 40.
The guide to dictation languages on iPhone and Android gives the steps and the caveats for Indian, Arabic and other non-Latin scripts. The questions people search for:
- Why is my dictation language not showing on iPhone?
- Can iPhone dictation understand two languages at once?
- Why does iPhone dictation type in the wrong language?
- Can you dictate in Hindi and other Indian languages on iPhone?
Language support is also a subject in its own right. See our overview of languages and accents in speech recognition for how accuracy varies across them.
Offline voice typing works on both platforms once the language is on the phone
Offline dictation has two benefits: it works on a plane or in a basement, and the audio does not need to leave the phone. It has a catch on each platform. On iPhone, Apple says Dictation runs on the device in many languages with no internet connection required 1, but a search field is an exception: when you dictate in a search field, the text may be sent to the search engine to process the search 41. On Android, a February 2025 report says Gboard's offline voice typing works on all devices 30, and Samsung keyboards keep offline language packs in their Offline voice input section 27. And on Windows, the comparison point, Microsoft says voice typing needs an internet connection 42.
A practical check is airplane mode. Turn it on, open a note, dictate a sentence, and if text appears the recognition is running on the phone. If it fails, the language is not downloaded. The offline voice typing guide gives the setup for Apple Dictation, Gboard, Samsung and Apple Watch and lists the features that still need a connection. Related pages:

On the Mac, the equivalent feature is covered in our guide to Dictation on Mac and in the free offline dictation page for Mac.
Phone keyboards are private only as far as the keyboard processes speech on the phone
Where your speech is processed decides how private it is. Apple says that your device shows in Keyboard settings whether dictated audio and transcripts are processed on the device or sent to Apple servers 43. When dictation is sent to Apple's servers, Apple says it is not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation 44, and for people who do opt in, only Apple's own employees, under confidentiality obligations, can access the audio 45. Apple also says it links Siri and Dictation request history, including transcripts, to a random rotating identifier rather than your Apple Account, and may keep it for up to two years 46.
Third-party keyboards are a different case. Apple's developer documentation says a custom keyboard runs in a sandbox that by default disallows access to the network 47. The Allow Full Access switch is what lifts that limit, and Apple's warning, as TechCrunch quoted it in 2014, is blunt: if you enable Full Access, developers are permitted to access, collect and transmit the data you type 48. That does not mean every such keyboard does so. It means the privacy of a third-party keyboard depends on its developer's policy, not on the platform. The deeper treatment is in the voice privacy overview.
On Android, the equivalent control is permission to record: the microphone is only used when you grant the permission you saw in the Gboard prompt 21.
When voice typing fails, check the setting before the microphone
Troubleshooting is the most searched part of this subject, and it has a short order of operations. This is the sequence our fix guides use.
A missing microphone key usually means Dictation is off or another keyboard is active. On an iPhone the setting is Enable Dictation under Settings > General > Keyboard 13; a third-party keyboard replaces Apple's and may have no microphone at all. A key that is there but dead is a permission problem. Apple's general advice for an app whose microphone does not work is to go to Settings, tap Microphone and make sure the app is enabled 49. On Android the equivalent is the recording permission, and refusing it with Don't allow blocks voice typing 21. Dictation that stops early may be the 30-second silence timeout 14, Low Power Mode or a Bluetooth headset that has switched modes. Wrong words come from a poor microphone, the wrong language or a noisy room.
Each platform has a full guide, and each symptom a short answer:
- iPhone dictation not working: greyed out, button missing, stopped after an update, stops after a few words, why it is so bad
- Voice typing not working on Android: microphone disappeared, no permission to enable voice typing, Android Auto voice commands
- Apple Watch: not working, disabled message
For hardware-side causes such as headsets and background noise, see the guides on dictation microphones, background noise and dictation not working in general. On how accurate phone dictation really is, a veterinary study that compared iPhone speech recognition with Whisper found the iPhone transcripts outperformed Whisper on readability, technical accuracy and clinical flow 50, though that is one small study of five case discussions. In a separate 2025 test of one episode, Apple's speech API had a word error rate of 10.3 percent against 1.5 percent for Whisper Large V3 Turbo 51 52. Those two results disagree because they measure different audio, models and criteria, which is a reason to test on your own voice.
Voice typing in WhatsApp uses your keyboard's microphone, not WhatsApp's
When you dictate into a WhatsApp chat, you use the microphone key of your keyboard, which is a different button from the microphone that records a voice message. Three different things get called "voice to text in WhatsApp", and the guide to voice typing in WhatsApp and messaging apps separates them:
- Typing by voice (the keyboard microphone), covered above.
- Reading voice messages you receive as text: WhatsApp offers voice message transcripts, which you turn on under Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts 53, and then tap and hold a voice message to get the Transcribe option 54. WhatsApp says the transcripts are generated on your device, so that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read the messages 55.
- Texting hands-free, using Siri or Google Assistant to send a message without touching the phone.
The distinction matters for privacy. A dictated message is private only if your keyboard processes speech on the phone, as discussed above. Pages for each case:
- How do you convert WhatsApp voice messages to text?
- Why are WhatsApp voice message transcripts not working?
- Why is voice typing not working in WhatsApp?
- How do you dictate and send a text message hands-free?
- How do you see audio messages as text in iMessage and Google Messages?
If you work with received audio rather than typing, the transcription overview covers turning recordings and voice notes into text, and apps and browsers covers dictation inside specific apps.
Apple Watch dictation starts from the microphone button in any text field
On Apple Watch, Apple lists the onscreen keyboard, Scribble and Dictation as its input methods. Dictation is described as "to have your speech transcribed to text" and is not available in all languages 31. The same guide says you can speak emoji by name 38, replace a word by tapping it and saying another, and select all with a double-tap 39.
What the watch does with your speech, and whether it works away from the iPhone, depends on the model and language, and Apple's text-entry page does not settle that. Our guide to dictation on Apple Watch separates what Apple documents from what is reported elsewhere, and walks through the usual fixes. Specific questions: why dictation is not working on an Apple Watch, how to change the dictation language and why the watch says dictation is disabled.
Live Transcribe, Live Captions and Voice Control go beyond the keyboard
Phones include free speech-to-text features for people who cannot hear speech, and for people who cannot use a touchscreen. They are different tools from keyboard dictation, and the guide to Live Transcribe, Live Captions and Voice Control explains each one. The accessibility side of this subject is also covered in our accessibility overview.
- Live Transcribe is Google's Android app for real-time captions of the conversation around you. It generates captions in over 80 languages with varying accuracy 56. In March 2022 Google announced that Live Transcribe would work fully offline after an additional download 57. According to Wikipedia, the offline mode is only available on devices with 6 GB of RAM and certain Pixel devices 58, and it works once the language pack is installed 59.
- Live Captions on iPhone caption audio playing on the phone and conversations. Apple says it is available on iPhone 11 or later, is not available in all languages or regions, and that its accuracy may vary, so it should not be relied on in high-risk or emergency situations 60. Android has its own Live Caption feature.
- Voice Control lets you operate an iPhone or iPad by voice. It needs iOS 13 or later and a one-time file download, after which no Wi-Fi connection is needed 61. Voice Access does the same job on Android.

A dictation app earns its place for long, private or polished text
For messages, the free keyboards are enough. A separate app earns its place in four cases: long dictation, offline privacy beyond the keyboard's own settings, AI cleanup of the text, and specialist vocabulary. On iPhone, apps have to work around the keyboard limits described above. On Android, a voice keyboard can replace Gboard entirely. Some dictation tools exist for phones as well as computers: Dragon Anywhere Mobile, for example, lets you create, edit and format documents of any length, according to Nuance 62.
Compare any app on four points: where audio is processed (phone or cloud), how it inserts text, its price model and its languages. Test it with your own voice before you pay. Common questions
Do I need an app to dictate on my phone? No. The keyboard on every iPhone, iPad, Android phone and Galaxy has a microphone key, as described in the sections above.
Is dictation faster than typing on a phone? Yes. In a controlled iPhone study, speech reached 153 words per minute against 52 on the keyboard 3, with proofreading still needed 10.
Does it work without internet? Often yes. Apple says iPhone Dictation runs on the device in many languages 1, and a February 2025 report says Gboard's offline voice typing works on all devices 30.
Why did the microphone key vanish? Dictation is off, another keyboard is active, or the permission was refused. See the iPhone and Android fix guides above.
Who can hear my dictation? It depends on whether processing is on the phone or on a server, which your iPhone's Keyboard settings show 43. A third-party keyboard with Full Access is governed by its developer's policy.

Questions people ask
- Can iPhone dictation understand two languages at once? No, not in one sentence, as far as Apple's pages show. Dictation follows the keyboard you are using, so switch keyboards between parts of what you say, and check the text afterwards.
- Can you dictate in Hindi and other Indian languages on iPhone?Partly. Apple's Dictation list includes Hindi (India), but Hindi is not in its separate On-Device and Modeless Dictation list. None of the other Indian languages Google named in 2017 is on any Dictation list on Apple's page, so iPhone Dictation does not offer them there.
- Can you dictate in Microsoft Word on iPhone, iPad or Android?Yes. Microsoft's Word Mobile has a Dictate button on Word for iPad, Word for iPhone and Word on Android phones and tablets. You need a microphone, a reliable internet connection and an active Microsoft 365 subscription, and you start by tapping the microphone icon.
- Can you use Gboard voice typing on iPhone?Yes, Gboard added voice typing on iPhone in 2017: you hold the microphone icon on the space bar, and its app transcribes your speech and returns the text to your field. Gboard's App Store listing says that voice input is sent to Google for transcription, and we could not confirm the current iPhone steps from Google's help.
- Can you use talk to text on a flip phone?Only some flip phones can. A folding Android phone, such as the Galaxy Z Flip, runs Android, so the same voice typing steps apply. Basic KaiOS flip phones were promised Google voice typing in 2019, but we could not confirm which models have it now. A landline cannot turn speech into text on its own.
- Can you use Whisper AI as a keyboard on iPhone or Android?Yes, but only through third-party keyboard apps, because OpenAI publishes Whisper as a speech model rather than a keyboard. On Android, WhisperType runs a Whisper model on the phone, while other Whisper keyboards send your speech to a server. On iPhone, a cloud Whisper keyboard needs Full Access, which permits the developer to collect what you type.
- Does iPhone dictation work offline?Yes, in the languages Apple lists for on-device dictation. There, your speech is processed on the iPhone and needs no internet connection, so it still works in airplane mode. Apple's statement does not cover other languages, and dictating into a search field can send your words to the search engine.
- How do dictation keyboards work on iPhone and Android?A dictation keyboard is a keyboard with a microphone key. Tap the key, speak, and a speech recognizer turns the audio into text that goes into the field you are typing in. On iPhone the key is Apple's Dictation; on Android it is the microphone on Gboard or another voice keyboard. Where the recognizer runs, on the phone or on a server, decides where your words go.
- How do you add a dictation language on iPhone?Turn on Enable Dictation in Settings, then General, then Keyboard. Next tap Keyboards, then Add New Keyboard, and choose the keyboard for your language, because Dictation uses the language of the keyboard you are using. If the language is still missing, it may not be on Apple's Dictation list for your iOS version.
- How do you add emoji with iPhone dictation? While you dictate on iPhone, say the name of the emoji, such as 'heart emoji' or 'smiley face emoji', and the emoji appears in the text. Apple says this works only in some languages, and English (United States) is on its list, so check your language first.
- How do you add speech to text to an Android or iOS app?Use the speech recognizer your phone system already provides. On iPhone and iPad, add Apple's Speech framework, ask for permission, and request on-device recognition when audio must stay on the phone. On Android, use SpeechRecognizer, check for an on-device recognizer first, and test each language, because offline support depends on the device and the language.
- How do you change the dictation language on Apple Watch? In a text field on the watch, open the input options, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, and tap the language you want. The watch takes its dictation language from the iPhone's keyboard for each app, so a language that is missing from the watch has to be added on the iPhone first.
- How do you control an Android phone with your voice?Use Google's Voice Access app, which Google says helps people use their Android device by voice, and say "Help" to see a short list of commands. Samsung Galaxy phones also have Bixby for spoken or typed commands. Google is replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on phones, so check your voice settings after the switch.
- How do you control your iPhone with your voice?Turn on Voice Control in Settings under Accessibility, then speak commands such as Open Control Center or Go home. Apple says Voice Control on iPhone lets you tap, swipe, type and more by voice, after a one-time file download, and it uses U.S. English only. Browse the full command list under Settings, Accessibility, Voice Control, Commands.
- How do you convert WhatsApp voice messages to text?Yes. WhatsApp converts voice messages you receive into text with its voice message transcripts. Turn the feature on under Settings, then Chats, then Voice message transcripts, choose the sender's language, and tap and hold a voice message and choose Transcribe. You cannot use it to turn your own voice notes into text before you send them.
- How do you delete the last word with iPhone dictation?Apple's iPhone commands delete text by naming it: say 'delete' followed by the exact words you want removed. We found no 'delete last word' command in Apple's pages, so for your last dictation, say 'undo' instead.
- How do you dictate a book or long document on iPhone?Dictate a book or long document on iPhone in short sessions. Tap the microphone key in a document app, speak, and tap again whenever Dictation stops, because it ends after 30 seconds without speech. When the draft is finished, export it as a PDF or Word file from the same app.
- How do you dictate an email on iPhone?Open a new message in Mail, tap in the body, tap the microphone key on the keyboard, and speak. Dictation works in any text field on iPhone, so email needs no special setup, once Enable Dictation is on. Read the message before you send it, because a dictated draft can contain errors that look correct.
- How do you dictate and send a text message hands-free?On an iPhone, you can dictate a text with the microphone key on the keyboard and then send it yourself, or ask Siri to send it: say who it is for, dictate the words, and confirm when Siri reads them back. On Android, Google Assistant may no longer take a message by voice: 9to5Google found in September 2026 that Assistant was gone from every device it checked, so test the command on your phone first. On both routes you approve the text before it is sent.
- How do you dictate notes on Android? To dictate a note on Android, tap inside the note's text field, tap Microphone on the Gboard keyboard and speak when you see Speak now. Gboard works in any app where you can type, including Google Keep, and offline voice typing is available on all devices, according to a 2025 report.
- How do you dictate notes on iPhone?Open a note, tap where the text should go, tap the microphone key on the keyboard, and speak. Dictation works in Notes like any other text field once Enable Dictation is on, under Settings, then General, then Keyboard.
- How do you dictate punctuation on Android? In Gboard on Android, you dictate punctuation by saying the mark's name, such as **Period**, **Comma**, **Question mark** or **New line**, at the point where it belongs. Some Pixel phones add marks automatically, and not every language supports the spoken phrases.
- How do you dictate punctuation on iPhone? On iPhone, say the name of a mark, such as 'period', 'exclamation point' or 'question mark', and Dictation types the symbol where the cursor is. In supported languages, iPhone also adds commas, periods and question marks on its own, and you can turn that off in Settings.
- How do you dictate reminders and lists on iPhone?Tap the text field for a reminder or list item, tap the microphone key on the keyboard, and speak. Dictation works in any text field on iPhone, so reminders and lists need no separate setting. Say "new line" to start the next item, and tap the key again to stop.
- How do you fix “no permission to enable voice typing” on Android?Open Gboard's permission for the microphone and set it to allow access while you use the app, which is the first fix Guiding Tech recommends. If the error remains, turn on the phone-wide Microphone access switch, because a device privacy setting can block the microphone even when the keyboard's own permission is on.
- How do you get live captions on phone calls? On a Google Pixel phone, Live Caption can caption your calls. Apple's documents list live captions for FaceTime video calls but not ordinary phone calls. If your phone cannot caption a call, a captioned telephone service is the route built for this, and US users with hearing loss must register to use it.
- How do you remove the dictation button on iPhone?Apple's dictation article describes no separate setting that hides only the microphone key on the keyboard. The key belongs to Dictation, so to remove it, go to Settings, then General, then Keyboard, and turn off Enable Dictation. A microphone key on another keyboard, such as Gboard, is controlled by that keyboard instead.
- How do you reset dictation on iPhone?Apple has no separate reset for Dictation. Try these steps in order: restart the phone, turn Enable Dictation off and on in Settings, General, Keyboard, and turn off Voice Control if you want standard Dictation. If that fails, Reset All Settings returns settings to factory defaults and keeps your photos, messages, apps and documents, so set Enable Dictation and your languages again afterward.
- How do you see audio messages as text in iMessage and Google Messages? On an iPhone running iOS 17 or later, Messages shows a text transcript under an audio message automatically, with no setting to turn on, but both you and the sender need iOS 17. In Google Messages on Android, turn on Voice Message Transcription in Message settings, then tap the transcript to read it.
- How do you turn a voice memo into text on iPhone?Open the recording in the Voice Memos app and choose View Transcript to read the text, then select and copy it into another app. The feature needs an iPhone 12 or later, one of Apple's supported languages, and a country or region where transcription is offered.
- How do you turn a voice recording into text on Samsung?Open the recording in the **Voice Recorder** app, tap **Transcript assist**, then tap **Transcribe**. In Samsung Notes, open your recording list and tap **Speech-to-text**. Transcript assist needs a supported Galaxy model, and Samsung advises checking your connection when transcription is slow or fails.
- How do you turn off dictation on iPhone? To turn off dictation on iPhone, open Settings, tap General, then Keyboard, and turn off Enable Dictation. To keep dictation but stop the automatic commas and periods, turn off Auto-Punctuation on the same screen instead.
- How do you turn on dictation on iPhone?Open Settings, tap General, then Keyboard, and turn on Enable Dictation. If a prompt appears, tap Enable Dictation to confirm. The microphone key then appears on the keyboard for you to use.
- How do you turn on voice typing in WhatsApp?WhatsApp has no voice typing switch of its own, so you turn voice typing on in your phone's keyboard. On iPhone, turn on Enable Dictation under Settings, General, Keyboard, then tap the microphone key on the keyboard when the message box is open. On Android, tap the microphone at the top of Gboard and allow it to use the microphone.
- How do you turn on voice typing on Android? To turn on voice typing on most Android phones, make Gboard your keyboard, open a text field, and tap Microphone at the top of the keyboard. Allow recording the first time you tap it. Samsung phones turn on voice input in Samsung Keyboard settings instead.
- How do you turn voicemail into text on iPhone and Android? On iPhone, open a voicemail in the Phone app and read the transcript shown in the bottom half of the screen, if your carrier offers it. On Android, turn on Voicemail transcription in the Phone app settings, if your carrier or phone is supported. On both, whether the option appears depends on your carrier.
- How many languages does iPhone dictation support?Apple's general Dictation list for iPhone has 63 language and region entries, which cover 34 different languages, on the iOS and iPadOS 27 feature page we read on 2026-10-17. A shorter On-Device and Modeless Dictation list has 48 entries in 22 languages. The count depends on whether you count languages or the regional versions of each one.
- Is dictation better in iOS 27?Apple says it is, but only for English on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air, and only once you turn on the advanced model. Apple says it transcribes more precisely and handles capitalization and punctuation as you speak, and we found no independent test that compares iOS 27 with iOS 26, so treat the gain as Apple's claim until you measure it on your own speech.
- Is iPhone dictation private?Mostly, yes, with conditions. Dictation processed on the iPhone does not send your audio to Apple, and Apple says dictation sent to its servers is not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation. Your words can still leave the phone when you dictate in a search field or into a third-party keyboard with Full Access turned on.
- Is Samsung voice input or Google voice typing better?Neither engine has been shown to be more accurate on Galaxy phones: Samsung publishes no comparison, and we found no independent test. Some users say Google Voice Typing works better for them, but those reports are anecdotal. Test both on the same paragraph in your language and keep the one that needs fewer corrections.
- Is there a Dragon dictation app for iPhone or Android? No Dragon dictation app for iPhone or Android is on sale that we could confirm. Nuance's Dragon Anywhere app for iOS and Android stopped selling in July 2026, according to a competing vendor, and we found no official notice from Nuance. On a phone, use Apple Dictation or Gboard, and use Dragon on a computer or through a clinical app your organization provides.
- Is there a medical dictation app for iPhone and Android?Yes, but for patient information the useful app is usually a vendor tool that works with your electronic health record, not a general phone app. One health system's 2020 Epic setup used Nuance Dragon dictation in the Haiku phone app. A vendor that handles patient information is usually a business associate under HIPAA, and we could not confirm that the phone keyboards meet that requirement.
- Is there a shortcut to start dictation on iPhone?Apple's iPhone steps start dictation by tapping a text field and then the microphone key on the keyboard. We found no Apple-documented shortcut or hardware button for starting it on iPhone. Apple does document keyboard shortcuts for dictation on iPad and Mac.
- Is there Live Transcribe for iPhone? No: Google's Live Transcribe is made for Android, and we found no official iPhone version. The closest iPhone tool is Live Captions, which you turn on in Settings under Accessibility. Apple says it can show conversations and FaceTime calls as text, but its accuracy may vary, so do not rely on it in an emergency.
- What is dictation on iPhone?Dictation on iPhone is Apple's built-in speech to text feature. You tap the microphone key on the keyboard, speak, and your words appear in the text field, with commas and periods added for you in supported languages. In many languages the speech is converted on the phone itself, with no internet connection.
- What is the best dictation app for iPad?For most people, the best dictation app on an iPad is the one Apple already includes: built-in dictation comes with iPadOS, works in any text field, and in many languages runs on the device. Choose Microsoft Word's Dictate only when the text must go into a Word file, and check a third-party app's iPad support and privacy terms before you pay for it.
- What is the best free dictation app for iPhone? The best free dictation app for iPhone is Apple's built-in Dictation, which is already on the phone and needs no download. It runs on the phone in many languages without an internet connection, but it stops after 30 seconds without speech, so a free third-party app is worth trying only when you need longer sessions, AI cleanup or specialist words.
- What is the best free voice to text app for Android? The best free voice to text app for most Android phones is Gboard, Google's keyboard, whose voice typing runs on the phone and can work offline. If you want a free keyboard that runs a Whisper model on the phone, WhisperType is the open source alternative, but it is an extra install with a 30-second dictation limit.
- What is the best meeting transcription app for iPhone and Android? There is no single best app. For a meeting you record yourself, start with the recorder that came with your phone: Voice Memos on iPhone, Transcript assist on a Galaxy phone, or Pixel Recorder on a Pixel. Before you record anyone else, check the consent rules where you are, and read the privacy policy of any app that records the meeting.
- What is the best offline speech to text app for Android? There is no single best app, because offline recognition depends on your phone, your keyboard and your language. Start with the voice input built into your keyboard, Gboard or Samsung Keyboard, and test it in airplane mode. If that fails and your language is one of the five Seamless supports, Seamless is a free open source option that works offline after one model download.
- What voice commands work with Gboard voice typing?Gboard voice typing accepts voice commands, and you can also tap a suggestion in its toolbar instead of saying the command. Google's help gives punctuation and new-line phrases as examples, such as **Period** and **New paragraph**, and it does not print a complete list, so check the commands your own phone offers.
- Where is dictation in iPhone settings?Dictation is in the Settings app under **General**, then **Keyboard**. Turn on **Enable Dictation** there, and the microphone key appears on the keyboard. The same screen controls the keyboards you add for other languages, and the iOS 27 Advanced Dictation Preview switch is in beta.
- Where is voice typing on Android? On most Android phones, voice typing is the **Microphone** key at the top of the Gboard keyboard, and it works in any app where you can type. Samsung Galaxy phones also have their own voice input, which depends on the keyboard you use.
- Why are voice commands not working on Android Auto?Android Auto voice commands come from your phone's assistant, which Google is replacing with Gemini for users who have upgraded from Google Assistant. Gemini in the car needs the Gemini app on your phone, and Google says you will see a tooltip on the car display once it is available to you. If those are in place and commands still fail, we could not confirm the cause from Google's own pages.
- Why are WhatsApp voice message transcripts not working?WhatsApp voice message transcripts can fail for four reasons: the feature is still off, the transcript language does not match the sender's language, your language is not on WhatsApp's list, or the recording has too much background noise. Check them in that order. The first two are fixed in WhatsApp's Settings, under Chats.
- Why did dictation stop working after an iPhone update?Dictation stops working after an iPhone update most often because the switch or language changed, or because the update introduced a new on-device model that works only on some iPhones. Turn **Enable Dictation** off and on, confirm your language, and restart the phone. Reset all settings only if those steps fail, since Apple documents the reset as a last step.
- Why did the microphone disappear from my Android keyboard? On Gboard, a missing microphone key can mean voice typing has been switched off in the keyboard's settings. On a Samsung phone, the microphone sits on the keyboard toolbar, and turning that toolbar off may hide it. A different keyboard may simply have its own microphone in another place. Check those settings first, then battery saving and the keyboard's version.
- Why does Apple Watch say dictation is disabled? The message means dictation is turned off on the watch, and AbilityNet says you can turn it on in the Apple Watch settings, under General and then Dictation. If the switch is already on, or the message comes back, check the iPhone's Dictation setting and any Screen Time restriction on the iPhone, then restart both devices.
- Why does iPhone dictation keep turning off?iPhone Dictation ends on its own after 30 seconds without speech, which Apple documents, so a long pause is expected. If it turns off sooner or keeps stopping, check whether Voice Control is on, whether Enable Dictation is switched on, and whether the app has microphone access. The Apple pages we read describe no other automatic stop.
- Why does iPhone dictation spell my name wrong?iPhone dictation picks words from what it hears, so a name it rarely sees, or one that sounds like a common word, can come out wrong. TidBITS reports that Apple offers no list you can edit. Spell the name aloud for a quick fix, and add the name to Contacts for a longer one, which worked in some cases and not others.
- Why does iPhone dictation stop after a few words?iPhone dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech, which Apple documents, so a pause of 30 seconds or more ends the session by design. If it stops sooner, check that the app has microphone access and look for debris in the microphone openings. Some users report that certain apps stop on short pauses, and I found no Apple statement or fix for that.
- Why does iPhone dictation type in the wrong language?Apple says Dictation works in the language of the keyboard you use, and its pages do not describe it detecting the language you speak. Text in the wrong language most likely means a different keyboard was active when you started dictating.
- Why is dictation greyed out on my iPhone? On an iPhone, dictation is greyed out or unavailable when the **Enable Dictation** switch is off, when your language is not available in your country or region, or when a Screen Time restriction blocks it. Apple's pages do not use the words greyed out, so check the switch, the language and the network first, then Screen Time.
- Why is dictation not working on my Apple Watch?Restart the watch and its paired iPhone first, since Apple recommends a restart when something on the watch is not working right. If that fails, check that Dictation is turned on, that your language is on Apple's list, and that the iPhone's keyboard languages match. A faulty microphone is also possible.
- Why is dictation not working on my iPad?On an iPad, dictation stops working when **Enable Dictation** is off, **Voice Control** is on, your language or region is not covered, or the microphone is blocked by a case, film or debris. Check these four in that order, starting with Settings, General, Keyboard, because that check takes seconds.
- Why is Gboard voice typing not working?Gboard voice typing can stop for one of four reasons: the voice typing switch is off, Gboard or the phone has blocked the microphone, battery saving is restricting the keyboard, or the speech files for your language are missing or still downloading. Check the voice typing switch and both microphone switches first, then test after each change in a plain notes app.
- Why is iPhone dictation so bad?iPhone dictation is weakest in conditions you can often change: a distant or noisy microphone, the wrong keyboard language, and names or technical words. The one independent test we found gave Apple's developer speech interface a 10.3 percent word error rate on one recording, and we found no measurement showing that it has got worse across iOS versions.
- Why is my dictation language not showing on iPhone?A dictation language appears on iPhone once you add its keyboard and turn on Enable Dictation, as long as Apple's Dictation list covers that language for your region and iOS version. If it still does not show, check that list next.
- Why is my iPhone dictating everything I say?An iPhone can type everything you say when Voice Control is on. Its Dictation mode enters every word that is not a command as text, and Apple says standard Dictation is not available while Voice Control is on. Open Settings, Accessibility, Voice Control and turn it off if you want standard Dictation. If the text doubles instead, both tools may be running, and Apple's pages do not explain that.
- Why is talk to text not working on my Samsung?Talk to text on Samsung usually stops because you are not in Samsung Keyboard, the microphone or toolbar is hidden, the wrong engine is selected, a first-use prompt was never answered, or, when you dictate offline, the language has no offline pack. Check those in that order. Samsung's pages do not name battery settings as a cause.
- Why is the dictation button missing on my iPhone keyboard? The dictation microphone key is missing from the iPhone keyboard when **Enable Dictation** is turned off, or when you are typing with a third-party keyboard that does not show the key. Turn on Enable Dictation, then switch to Apple's keyboard with the globe key: if the key returns, the third-party keyboard is the cause.
- Why is the voice input button missing on Samsung Keyboard? On Galaxy phones the microphone sits on the Samsung Keyboard toolbar, so it goes missing when that toolbar is switched off or when another keyboard is active. Turn the toolbar back on under Samsung Keyboard settings first. A navigation bar switch, which some users report as the cause, is the next thing to check.
- Why is voice typing not working in WhatsApp?When voice typing fails in WhatsApp, check the keyboard before WhatsApp: that Dictation is on for iPhone, or that Gboard has microphone access on Android. Then check the phone's own microphone switch and the language. If dictation works in Notes but not in WhatsApp, check WhatsApp's microphone access first.
Terms in this topic
- Allow Full AccessAllow Full Access is an iPhone setting that you switch on for a third-party keyboard before it can have open access, such as network access. Apple warns that a keyboard with this setting on is permitted to collect and transmit the text you type.
- GboardGboard is Google's keyboard app for Android and iPhone, and its microphone key turns speech into text in any app where you can type. On Android it can run speech recognition on the phone, while on iPhone the voice input is handled inside the Gboard app and sent to Google.
- Google voice typingGoogle voice typing is the speech-to-text input that Google provides on Android, so you can speak words into a text field. Its name and location vary by phone: Gboard shows a microphone key, while Samsung Galaxy phones list Google Voice Typing next to their own voice input.
- Live CaptionsLive Captions is a feature that shows text for speech and audio as it happens, using the phone's own processing. Google calls it Live Caption on Pixel phones, and Apple calls it Live Captions on iPhone. It reads what others say, so it is the reverse of dictation.
- Live TranscribeLive Transcribe is a Google app for Android phones that turns the speech of people around you into captions as they talk. It helps you follow a conversation. It does not type your own words into a text field, which is what dictation does.
- Real-time text (RTT)Real-time text (RTT) is a way of sending text as it is typed, so the other person can read each word before the sender finishes. It is used in conversation by many deaf and hard of hearing people, and it has no send step like an ordinary text message. It is a typing channel, not a speech technology.
- Samsung voice inputSamsung voice input is the voice-to-text feature built into the Samsung Keyboard on Galaxy phones and tablets. It works only with that keyboard, so it is a separate choice from Google Voice Typing.
- Speech Services by GoogleSpeech Services by Google is the Android speech engine from Google that turns speech into text for other apps and reads on-screen text aloud. Google's Play Store listing now uses the title Speech Recognition & Synthesis, and reviews on that listing still call the app by the older name.
- Third-party keyboardA third-party keyboard is a keyboard app from a developer other than the phone's maker, which you install and switch to in place of the built-in keyboard. Apple calls the iPhone version a custom keyboard, and Apple's rules limit what it can do, such as network access and microphone use.
- Transcript Assist (Galaxy AI)Transcript Assist is a Samsung Galaxy AI feature that converts a saved recording in the Voice Recorder app into text. It works on select Galaxy models and needs a working internet connection. It transcribes recordings you already made, so it is not live dictation into a text field.
- Voice Access (Android)Voice Access (Android) is a Google feature that lets you operate an Android phone or tablet by speaking commands, such as opening an app or tapping a labelled item. Google built it for people who have difficulty using a touch screen. It is a control tool that can also enter text, and it is separate from Windows Voice Access on PCs.
- Voice message transcriptsA voice message transcript is written text of the words in an audio message, produced by the messaging app so you can read instead of listen. Apple, Google and WhatsApp each offer one, with different defaults and different privacy arrangements. It turns audio into text, the reverse of dictation.
