Question · Dictation on Windows
Is Windows Voice Access as good as Dragon?
For many people, Voice Access is good enough, and it is built into Windows 11. We found no independent test that compares it with Dragon Professional on the same audio, so no one can honestly say it is as accurate for your voice. Dragon is a paid product, so test both on your own voice and vocabulary before you pay.

Voice Access may be good enough for many people, but the evidence does not let us say it is as good as Dragon. Voice Access is built into Windows 11 1, and it can control the PC as well as write text 2. Dragon Professional is a paid product, and one US reseller lists a one-user license at $685.99 3. We found no independent test that measures both on the same recordings, so the answer depends on your work and on a test you run yourself.
No independent test compares Voice Access with Dragon on the same audio
The reviews we found are opinions. A 2022 Tom's Guide writer said Voice Access gave them a level of productivity they had not reached with other speech recognition software, including Dragon 4. That is one writer's experience on one set of tasks.
Dragon's own vendor page says employees can "dictate documents 3 times faster than typing with up to 99% recognition accuracy" 5. That is the company's claim, and it publishes no method. Treat both as leads to check, not as results.
Voice Access does more than dictate, and it works offline after setup
Microsoft says Voice Access offers both commanding and dictation, so you can perform tasks across the PC and not only write text 2. Voice Access is available in Windows 11, version 22H2 or later 6. Its first setup needs an internet connection 7, and after that Microsoft says it works without one 8.
For specialist words, Voice Access has an Add to vocabulary command that Microsoft lists for improving recognition of complex or hard to pronounce words 9. The step-by-step setup is in our Voice Access guide for Windows 11.
Dragon costs more and asks more of your PC
Dragon Professional is the paid option. A CDW listing shows a one-user Dragon Professional (v. 16) license at $685.99 3. Prices change, so check the current price with the seller. TechRadar's 2023 review lists three drawbacks: it consumes computing resources, it is expensive, and it has a steep learning curve 10.
Dragon's case rests on heavy control and on whether its accuracy beats the built-in tool for your voice. That is worth paying for only if you use the extra control. If you dictate short emails and notes, the added cost and learning time bring little gain.
It depends on what you dictate and which Windows you run
- Short messages, notes and quick replies: Voice typing (Win+H) is the simpler choice, and it needs internet for every use 11. Voice Access also works here, offline once it is set up 8.
- Hands-free control of apps and text editing: Voice Access covers this, and it comes with Windows 11 2.
- Daily dictation of specialist vocabulary for hours: test both. A vendor claim is not enough, and a single writer's review is not enough either.
- Windows 10 or a Windows 11 build before 22H2: Voice Access is available only in Windows 11, version 22H2 or later 6, so check Dragon's system requirements for your version before you plan around it.
What to do before you choose
- Confirm that your PC runs Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, since Voice Access needs it 6.
- Dictate 500 words of your real work with the microphone you will use every day, first with Voice Access and then with Dragon if you can use a trial.
- Count the corrections, and time the whole job, not only the speaking.
- Compare Dragon's one-time price with the time it saves you over a year 12.
If the built-in tool gets your words right with a few corrections, it may be enough for you, whatever the reviews say. If it does not, the paid tool has to earn its price on your vocabulary.
