Google Docs Voice Typing: How to Use It and Its Limits
Google Docs has voice typing built in. Open a document in Chrome, Edge or Safari, choose Tools, then Voice typing, and click the microphone. Google's older help page says its editing commands work only in English, and Firefox is not on Google's list of supported browsers.

Google Docs voice typing turns your speech into text inside a document, and it is built into Docs in supported browsers. You open a document in Chrome, Edge or Safari, start it from the Tools menu, and speak. Google's December 2020 help page says the editing commands work only in English 1, and the help pages we could read give no accuracy figure for the feature, so the sections below set out the steps, the limits and the evidence behind each one.
Voice typing is built into Google Docs in supported browsers
Voice typing is part of the Google Docs editor, so there is nothing to install. Google's steps start with opening a document in a supported browser 2, which means the browser you use decides whether the feature appears at all.
The browser list has grown since the feature first shipped. In December 2020, Google's help page said voice typing was only available in Chrome browsers 3. The current list, as archived on 10 October 2026, names Chrome, Edge and Safari 4. Old tutorials that say "Chrome only" describe the 2020 page.
| Browser | Google help page, December 2020 3 | Google help page, 10 October 2026 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | Supported | Supported |
| Edge | Not listed | Supported |
| Safari | Not listed | Supported |
| Firefox | Not listed | Not listed |
Google's December 2020 help page describes it as a way to type and edit by speaking in Google Docs or in Google Slides speaker notes, and names no other place 5. It is not a system-wide dictation tool, so email and web forms need a different tool, covered in the last section.
Turning it on takes one menu: Tools, then Voice typing
Google's own steps for starting voice typing are these:
- Open a document in Google Docs in Chrome, Edge or Safari 4.
- Click Tools, then click Voice typing. A microphone box appears 2.
- Click the microphone and speak. Click it again to stop.
When a site asks for the microphone, Chrome asks you to choose Allow while visiting the site 6. Choose that option. If you block the microphone, the site cannot use it until you change that setting in Chrome.
Google's keyboard shortcut list also gives a way to start voice typing from the keyboard: Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows, or Command + Shift + S on a Mac 7. That list labels the shortcut as available in Chrome browsers, which is narrower than the three-browser list above. Test the shortcut in Edge or Safari before you rely on it there.
Test voice typing before you dictate a long document
A short test takes only a few minutes and shows the problems before they cost you a draft. Use it on the computer and microphone you plan to use.
- Open a blank document in a supported browser and start voice typing from Tools, then Voice typing.
- Speak two or three sentences at a normal pace, in a quiet room, and include one spoken punctuation phrase such as "period" or "comma".
- Read back what appeared. Count the words the engine got wrong, and check whether the punctuation phrase worked.
- Say the editing command you need, such as "new paragraph", and confirm it does what you expect. If the commands do nothing, check the language you are speaking against the English-only limit covered below.
If the test is poor, change the microphone or the room before you change anything else. The microphone evidence in the accuracy section explains why.
It runs in Chrome, Edge and Safari, and Firefox is not on Google's list
Google's current list names three browsers, Chrome, Edge and Safari, and it does not name Firefox 4. If you use Firefox, switch to one of the three listed browsers before you look for voice typing in Docs.
The same Google sentence says that when you turn on voice typing, your web browser controls the speech-to-text service 4. So the browser decides how speech becomes text, not Docs alone. The privacy section below explains what that means for confidential text.
If the menu item is missing in a supported browser, the cause is usually the microphone permission or the browser itself. Our answers on where voice typing is in Google Docs and why it is not working walk through the checks.
Punctuation is spoken, and editing commands work only in English
Punctuation comes from spoken phrases. Google's December 2020 help page says you can use different phrases to add punctuation to your text 8. That table lists period, comma, exclamation point, question mark, new line and new paragraph, which covers the breaks most drafts need. The spoken punctuation list and the question on punctuation give more detail.
Editing and formatting are a separate matter. After you start voice typing, you can use commands to edit and format your document, and Google's December 2020 help page says those commands are available only in English 1. In practice, you can speak text in a language on Google's list 9 and still get the typed words, but you cannot use the editing commands in that language. The commands list sets out what is on the page.
This rule comes from a December 2020 copy of Google's page 1. We could not load the current page while writing this guide, so check the live help page before you plan a workflow around the commands.
Speech input was faster than typing in a 2018 phone study
Speech can beat typing on speed, but the evidence we found comes from a phone study, and that study also measured errors. In a controlled study on an iPhone, English text entered by speech reached 153 words per minute, against 52 words per minute on the built-in keyboard 10 11. That is 2.93 times the keyboard speed 10. For Mandarin Chinese, speech reached 123 words per minute, against 43 words per minute with the Pinyin keyboard 12 13.
The same study found a trade-off. Speech produced fewer errors while people were entering text, with a 5.30 percent corrected error rate against 11.22 percent for the keyboard, but it left slightly more errors in the final text: 1.30 percent uncorrected errors with speech, against 0.79 percent with the keyboard 14. Speech is fast, but a fast draft still needs a read-through.
These numbers describe an iPhone study with short messages in a quiet room, and speed counted the finished text, including time spent on corrections 10. The authors say results in non-laboratory settings still need study 15. Docs voice typing was not part of this study, so use the figures as a rough guide to how speech compares with typing, not as a forecast for your own drafts.
Accuracy depends on the microphone, the room and the speaker
Google's help pages that we could read give no accuracy figure for Docs voice typing, and we found no independent test of the current version. The evidence below comes from speech research on other systems. Each row shows a condition that changes the result, and the table lists the numbers we could check.
| Study | Condition | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-microphone study, 2017 | Close-talking read speech, studio recording | 3.7 percent word error rate 16 |
| Multi-microphone study, 2017 | One distant microphone, same speech | About 3.2 times the close-talk rate 17 |
| Koenecke et al., 2020 | Five commercial systems, interview audio, Black speakers | 0.35 average word error rate 18 |
| Koenecke et al., 2020 | Same five systems, white speakers | 0.19 average word error rate 18 |
Researchers describe word error rate as a standard measure of the discrepancy between machine and human transcriptions 19. A lower rate is better.
Microphone distance gives the largest ratio of the figures in this section. In the 2017 study, close-talking studio speech had a word error rate of 3.7 percent 16, and a single distant microphone gave about 3.2 times that rate 17. The two conditions are not identical, so the ratio is rough. The practical point is that a laptop microphone across the desk is a weaker input than a headset close to your mouth. Apple's Dictation help for Mac says a headset microphone may help when you use Dictation in a noisy environment or a room with excessive echo 20. That advice is for Apple's dictation, not Docs, but the same room problems can affect any speech recognizer.
The speaker also matters. Across five commercial systems, the average word error rate was 0.35 for Black speakers and 0.19 for white speakers 18. The authors trace the gap to the acoustic models the systems used 21. These figures come from 2020 systems and interview audio, not from Docs dictation. The study reports one average across its systems, and we did not find a Google-only figure to cite.
Taken together, the evidence says three things. Use a close microphone in a quiet room. Expect to correct a draft, because no rate in this evidence is zero. And do not treat any single number here as the accuracy of Docs today.
Voice typing works in a listed set of languages and accents
The December 2020 copy of Google's help page introduces a list of languages with the sentence "Voice typing works in these languages and accents" 9. That list is in the December 2020 copy, and we could not load the current page to compare. This guide does not reproduce the list, because it may have changed.
Before you start, check that your language is on the live list. If it is, you can speak text in it. The 2020 help page limits the editing commands to English 1, so a non-English document will need manual editing for corrections and formatting.
Slides speaker notes take voice typing but no commands
Google's 2020 page says you can type and edit by speaking in Slides speaker notes as well as in Docs 5. It also says voice commands are not available in Slides speaker notes 22. In practice, you can dictate a script into speaker notes, but you cannot use the commands to edit or format it. Edit the notes by hand afterwards.
On a phone, the keyboard's microphone does the dictating
Google's steps begin with a document opened in a supported browser 2, and we did not find a Google help page that describes a Voice typing menu in the Docs phone apps. Do not assume the menu exists on your phone.
On a phone, the dictation route we could identify is the keyboard's microphone, which we did not check against a Google page. Google's keyboard, Gboard, moved voice typing onto the phone in 2019 with an on-device recognizer of 80 MB that works even when the phone is offline, first on Pixel phones in American English 23. That is Gboard's feature, not Docs'. We did not check the phone keyboard steps against a Google page, so confirm in your keyboard's settings that its microphone is on. Our question on voice typing on a phone covers the phone steps, and the phones and tablets overview covers phone dictation more broadly.
Your browser handles the speech, so check its privacy terms
Google says that your web browser controls the speech-to-text service when voice typing is on 4. The privacy answer therefore depends on the browser you choose, not only on Google Docs. We did not find an official Google page that says where Chrome, Edge or Safari send the audio for conversion. Read each browser's privacy policy before you dictate confidential text.
For comparison, Microsoft says Windows voice typing converts speech to text using online speech recognition 24. That is a different product, but it shows that a dictation feature can depend on a service outside your computer.
Voice typing types only into Docs, so other apps need a different tool
Google's December 2020 help page names only Google Docs and Google Slides speaker notes 5, so it does not cover email, chat or web forms. For those, use a tool that works across apps. Our overview of dictating into any app compares the built-in and system-wide options, and speech to text in Chrome covers browser options. For a quick test in the browser, use our free dictation in the browser.
Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows, so it is one option for dictation outside Docs. Start with the download page if that is what you need.
Each limit has a workaround, and most need no extra tool
The limits above fall into four groups. The table lists each one, what Google's pages say, and what to do about it. The facts behind each row are cited in the section that covers it.
| Limit | What Google's pages say | Workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Browser | Chrome, Edge and Safari are listed, Firefox is not 4 | Use a listed browser for Docs dictation |
| Editing commands | Available only in English, on the December 2020 page 1 | Dictate the text, then edit with the keyboard or mouse |
| Punctuation | Added with spoken phrases 8 | Test the phrases you need before a long session |
| Slides speaker notes | Typing works, commands do not 22 | Dictate the script, then edit it by hand |
| Phones | The Tools steps begin in a supported browser, and we found no Docs phone menu 2 | Use your keyboard's microphone, and check its settings |
| Accuracy | No figure on Google's pages we could read | Use a headset close to your mouth in a quiet room |
If a limit is a deal-breaker, such as dictating in a language other than English, where the editing commands do not work, or dictating in an app that is not Docs, a different tool is the better choice. The last section of the guide covers the alternatives.

Questions about this
- Can Google Docs transcribe an audio file?Google Docs does not appear to transcribe files. Its voice typing listens to your live microphone and types what you say, and the Google help pages we could read describe no way to upload an audio file or video. To transcribe a file, use a tool that accepts uploads, such as Word's Transcribe feature for Microsoft 365 on Windows or Voice Memos on a Mac.
- How do you add punctuation with Google Docs voice typing? In Google Docs voice typing, you add punctuation by saying the name of the mark. Google's 2020 help page lists period, comma, exclamation point, question mark, new line and new paragraph, and it warns that punctuation might not be available in every language. Other marks, such as quotation marks, are not on that list.
- How do you use voice typing in Google Docs on a phone?Google's voice typing steps describe a Tools menu in a computer browser, and the Google help pages we could read name no voice typing menu in the Docs phone apps. On a phone, dictate into Google Docs through your keyboard's microphone: on Android, tap the microphone at the top of Gboard, and on iPhone, turn on Dictation in Settings and tap the dictation key on the keyboard.
- Is there a speech to text extension for Google Docs?Yes, Chrome extensions such as Voice In add speech to text to Google Docs, but you do not need one, because voice typing is built into Docs in Chrome, Edge and Safari. Before you install an extension, read its store listing's privacy section, since listings can disclose the personal data a developer handles. Your computer's own dictation also types into Docs.
- What are the Google Docs voice typing commands?Google Docs voice typing has spoken commands for selecting, formatting, editing, moving and resuming, and they work only in English. The list we could read is from a December 2020 copy of Google's help page, so open the voice commands list inside Docs to check it. Examples include Delete, Undo, Stop listening and Resume.
- What is the keyboard shortcut for Google Docs voice typing? The shortcut for Google Docs voice typing is Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows and Command + Shift + S on a Mac. Google's shortcut list labels it as available in Chrome browsers, while its voice typing help page lists Chrome, Edge and Safari, so test the shortcut in Edge or Safari before you rely on it.
- What languages does Google Docs voice typing support?Google Docs voice typing works in a long list of languages and accents on Google's current help page, and that list includes Hindi and two Urdu entries, Urdu (India) and Urdu (Pakistan). The editing commands work only in English, and punctuation phrases might not be available in every language, so check both before you start.
- Where is voice typing in Google Docs?On a computer, open a document in Chrome, Edge or Safari, choose Tools, then Voice typing, and click the microphone. The shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Command + Shift + S on a Mac, but Google lists it for Chrome, so test it in Edge or Safari before you rely on it.
- Why is Google Docs voice typing not working?Check four things in this order: a browser on Google's list, microphone access allowed in Chrome, a microphone that Docs can hear, and English for editing commands. The first two stop voice typing from starting at all, so check them before anything else.
- Why is voice typing missing in Google Docs?Voice typing is missing in Google Docs for three likely reasons: the browser is not one Google lists (Chrome, Edge or Safari), an administrator may have turned the feature off for your organization, or you are on a phone, where Google's steps do not apply. Google's help page still described the feature in its copy archived on 10 October 2026, so the feature had not been removed by then.
