Question · Dictation on phones and tablets
Why does Apple Watch say dictation is disabled?
The message means dictation is turned off on the watch, and AbilityNet says you can turn it on in the Apple Watch settings, under General and then Dictation. If the switch is already on, or the message comes back, check the iPhone's Dictation setting and any Screen Time restriction on the iPhone, then restart both devices.

When Apple Watch shows a Dictation Disabled message, dictation is turned off on the watch. The fix that AbilityNet describes is to turn dictation on in the watch's own settings. If the switch is already on, or the message returns, check the paired iPhone, either its Dictation setting or a Screen Time restriction. Our guide to dictation on Apple Watch covers the steps to start dictation once it is working.
The message means dictation is turned off on the watch
AbilityNet, the UK charity whose guide covers watchOS 9, says that if you receive a message saying Dictation Disabled, you can turn it back on in the Apple Watch settings 1. The steps it gives are short:
- Open the Settings app on the watch.
- Tap General, then scroll down and tap Dictation.
- On the next screen, tap the switch for Dictation to turn it on.
Those steps are from AbilityNet's watchOS 9 guide, and the menu names can change between versions of watchOS. We did not find an Apple page that quotes the message or gives the same path, so check the menus on your own watch. Apple's guide to entering text describes dictation as an input method you can choose from the input button, but it does not describe the switch ( Apple's guide to entering text).
The iPhone has its own Dictation switch
The paired iPhone has a Dictation setting too. Apple says that on an iPhone you turn on Dictation in the Settings app under General, then Keyboard, by turning on Enable Dictation and confirming the prompt if one appears 2.
Apple's pages do not say whether that iPhone switch controls the watch's dictation. So check it only if the watch's own switch is already on and the message still appears. If the iPhone switch is off, turn it on, restart both devices and test again.
A Screen Time restriction can turn off built-in features
On iPhone, Apple gives the path Settings, Screen Time, Content & Privacy Restrictions, then Allowed Apps, where built-in features can be turned off 3. Apple's example on that page is SharePlay, and it does not name Dictation or Siri. So we could not confirm from Apple's pages that a Dictation or Siri switch is on that list.
Apple does show that Screen Time can restrict dictation on the Mac 4, which is why it is worth checking on the phone too. Community replies on Apple's forums describe a Siri & Dictation switch under Allowed Apps. We did not verify that switch on a device, so look for it on your own iPhone. If it is turned off, forum replies warn that Siri may also need setting up again afterwards, so check Siri after you change it.
If the phone is managed by someone else, such as a work or family account, the restriction may be set by that person. In that case, ask them to change it, rather than trying to get around it.
What to do, in order
- Check the Dictation switch on the watch under General, then Dictation, and turn it on.
- Restart the watch and its paired iPhone. Apple says that if something on Apple Watch is not working right, you should restart the watch and its paired iPhone 5.
- On the iPhone, check Settings, General, Keyboard, and make sure Enable Dictation is on.
- On the iPhone, check Settings, Screen Time, Content & Privacy Restrictions, then Allowed Apps. If you find a Siri & Dictation switch there and it is off, turn it on. This step relies on community reports, not on an Apple page.
- Test dictation in a messaging app, with the iPhone nearby.
- If the message still appears after these steps, contact Apple Support.
It depends on what the message says and when it appears
- The message appears only after a change to the watch or the phone. Undo the change first, then check the settings above.
- Dictation fails without the message. The message is not the same as a microphone fault or an unsupported language, and each has its own cause. We did not find a source that says a language gap produces the Dictation Disabled message. See the question on why dictation is not working on Apple Watch for those causes.
- You want dictation in another language. Changing the language is a separate task, covered on the question on how to change the dictation language on Apple Watch.
If the same message appears on the iPhone, the problem is more likely in the phone's own settings. The question on why dictation is greyed out on iPhone covers that case, and the question on dictation that is enabled but not working covers the next steps when the setting is on. For Apple's assistant, see the Siri term.
