Question · Dictation on phones and tablets
Why does iPhone dictation keep turning off?
iPhone Dictation ends on its own after 30 seconds without speech, which Apple documents, so a long pause is expected. If it turns off sooner or keeps stopping, check whether Voice Control is on, whether Enable Dictation is switched on, and whether the app has microphone access. The Apple pages we read describe no other automatic stop.

Dictation on an iPhone turns off in two kinds of case. The first is the normal end of a session, which Apple documents and which needs no fix. The second is a stop you did not ask for. Apple's pages do not explain that one, so the checks below separate the two.
The 30-second rule ends most sessions by design
Apple says that on iPhone, "Remain silent for 30 seconds. Dictation stops automatically." 1 The timer runs only while nothing is said. A pause shorter than 30 seconds does not end the session, so a session that stops in the middle of a sentence you are still speaking is not this rule. Tap the microphone key to start again, and speak in phrases so you do not leave long gaps.
Voice Control can change the dictation you are using
When Voice Control is on, the dictation you use changes. Apple's page says that "When Voice Control is on, you use Voice Control to dictate text; standard iOS Dictation isn't available." 2 Apple shows whether Voice Control is listening with a microphone in the status bar, which "indicates that Voice Control is listening or not listening." 3 Apple's pages do not say that Voice Control ends a Dictation session. They do say the two tools are not both available 2, so check which one you are using before you change the Dictation switch.
Check the switch first, then the app's microphone
If Dictation turns off in every app, check the switch. Go to Settings, tap General, tap Keyboard, and turn on Enable Dictation 4. If it stops only in one app, check that app's microphone access under Settings, then Microphone 5.
An orange indicator in the status bar is also worth a look. Apple says that "An orange indicator means the microphone is being used by an app on your iPhone." 6 If the indicator shows at the moment dictation stops, another app may be using the microphone. Apple does not say that this ends Dictation, so treat it as a clue to check, not a confirmed cause.
Reports of sudden stops have no Apple explanation
Community posts describe Dictation that cuts off after a few seconds, or that turns off once Bluetooth earbuds connect. I found these in search results, and I could not confirm them against Apple's documentation. The Apple pages I read describe no earbud rule. To test the earbuds, remove them or turn them off and dictate with the iPhone's own microphone. If the stops stop, the earbuds are the variable, and you can report that to Apple Support with your iOS version.
What to do when dictation keeps turning off
- Let the 30-second rule work for you. Speak in phrases, and tap the microphone key again after a long pause.
- Check Voice Control. Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then tap Voice Control 7. Once Voice Control is set up, Apple lets you turn it on or off from Control Center, from the Accessibility Shortcut, or by asking Siri 8. Turn it off if you want standard Dictation.
- Turn Enable Dictation off and on, then restart the iPhone.
- Check microphone access for the app where the stop happens.
- Test in Notes. If it still stops, reset dictation using the steps for resetting dictation on iPhone.
- Report the problem to Apple Support with your iOS version, the app, and whether the stop follows a pause.
If dictation stops after only a few words, read why iPhone dictation stops after a few words. If it types everything you say, read why your iPhone is dictating everything you say. The full set of checks, in order, is in the guide to iPhone dictation that is not working, and the overview of this subject is dictation and voice to text on iPhone and Android.
