Dictation on phones and tablets
iPhone Dictation Not Working? How to Fix It
Most iPhone dictation failures come from a switched-off Dictation setting, a language or network condition that is not met, a keyboard or microphone permission problem, or a Screen Time restriction. Match what you see to the matching check below, work in order, and reset all settings only after a restart.

10.3percent word error rate
In a 2025 9to5Mac test of one 7-minute-31-second episode, Apple's speech API had a word error rate of 10.3 percent, against 1.5 percent for Whisper Large V3 Turbo.

If Dictation on your iPhone does not work, the cause is one of a few settings: the Enable Dictation switch, the language and the network, the keyboard you are typing with, the microphone permission for the app, or a Screen Time restriction. Check them in the order your symptom points to. Apple's pages do not rank these causes by how often they occur, so this guide sorts the fixes by what you see on the screen, and it says where Apple's documentation is silent.
Match the symptom to its cause before you change any setting
Each symptom points to a short list of checks. Start with the one that matches what you see, and stop when the key works.
| What you see | Check first | Where below |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone key greyed out or not responding | Enable Dictation, the language, the network, Screen Time | Greyed-out key |
| Microphone key missing from the keyboard | Enable Dictation, the keyboard you have open | Missing key |
| Stopped working after an iOS update | Enable Dictation again, the iOS 27 model, then a restart | After an update |
| Stops after a few words | The 30-second silence rule, app permission, the microphone | Stops early |
| Works, but the words are wrong | The microphone, the room, the language | Wrong words |
Restart the iPhone before you try any of these. Apple's reset guide says that if an iPhone has problems with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or other system features, you should restart it first 1. That article does not mention Dictation, so this guide applies the same order to it. Reset all settings only after the checks have failed.
A greyed-out microphone key can mean Dictation is off, the language is not covered or the network is missing
I found no Apple page that describes a greyed-out key by name. Apple's pages do document the three conditions that affect whether the key can work: the Enable Dictation switch, whether your language is available, and whether the speech is processed on the phone or sent over a connection.
- Open Settings, tap General, then tap Keyboard, and turn on Enable Dictation. If a prompt appears, tap Enable Dictation 2.
- Confirm that your language is covered. Apple says that "Dictation may not be available in all languages or in all countries or regions, and features may vary" 3. By my count, the row for On-Device and Modeless Dictation in Apple's iOS feature availability table lists 48 language and regional variants 4. Apple's list is the place to check your exact language and region, because the list changes by version.
- Check the network. Apple says Dictation "is processed on your iPhone in many languages, and no internet connection is required" 5. The word "many" matters: if your language is not in the on-device group, turn on Wi-Fi or cellular data and try again. Apple also notes that cellular data charges may apply when you use Dictation 6.
- If the key works in some apps and not in others, check that app's microphone access. Go to Settings, tap Privacy & Security, tap Microphone, and make sure the app is enabled 7.
- Check Screen Time. On iPhone, the list of built-in features that Screen Time can turn off is under Settings, then Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions, then Allowed Apps 8. Apple's example on that page is SharePlay, and I did not find a Dictation or Siri switch on Apple's pages. Some community posts describe a Siri & Dictation switch in that list. I could not confirm it, so look for it yourself, and if a restriction is set by a parent, school or employer, that person controls it. On a Mac, Apple's Screen Time can turn Dictation off as well 9, so the same check applies there.
A quick test separates a settings problem from an app problem. Open Notes, start a new note, and try the key there. If the key works in Notes but fails in one other app, the cause is that app's text field or its microphone permission. If it fails everywhere, start with the switch, the language and the keyboard.
A missing microphone key can mean Dictation is off, or the keyboard you have open is a third-party one
If the key does not appear, check that Dictation is on. Apple's steps are to turn on Enable Dictation under General, then Keyboard 2. If the switch is already on, turn it off and back on. The path to turn it off is the same 10.
The keyboard is the second cause. Dictation follows the keyboard you use: Apple says that "when you use a keyboard for another language, you can use Dictation in that language as well" 11. If you dictate in a second language, add its keyboard first. A third-party keyboard is a different case. Apple's developer documentation says that a custom keyboard runs in a sandbox whose default configuration disallows access to the network 12, and that users must explicitly turn on Allow Full Access for a keyboard in Settings before it can have open access 13. Apple's pages I opened do not say which keyboards show the Dictation key, so test it: if the key is missing while a third-party keyboard is open, switch to Apple's keyboard with the globe key and look again. If the key appears, the third-party keyboard is the cause, and you can decide whether to keep it. Read about third-party keyboards and Allow Full Access before you change that setting.
After an iOS update, check the switch and the new model before you reset anything
Updates can change Dictation without touching the switch. Apple says that, with Apple Intelligence in iOS 27, "dictation uses an on-device model to improve spelling, punctuation, and capitalization," in English on the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air or later 14. Apple's separate list for Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 is wider, covering the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models or later 15. An iPhone 16 can therefore run Apple Intelligence without getting that English model, so the two lists are not the same.
Apple does not document a language re-download step for iPhone Dictation, so do not rely on one. Apple's developer session on its newer speech interface says that transcription runs entirely on the device, although its language models must first be downloaded 16. That describes a developer interface, not the Dictation key, so treat a language download as a possibility rather than a documented fix. The steps that Apple does document are these:
- In Settings, tap General, then Keyboard, turn Enable Dictation off, then on again.
- Restart the iPhone.
- If it still fails, reset all settings. Open Settings and tap General. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone, tap Reset, then tap Reset All Settings 17.
Reset All Settings "returns settings to factory defaults," and "your photos, messages, apps, and documents aren't deleted" 18. It does change saved settings, and Apple's list includes the keyboard dictionary among them 19. Read Apple's full list before you reset, since it covers more than the keyboard, then set Enable Dictation and your languages again and test in a note.
Dictation that stops after a few words can be the 30-second rule, a permission or the microphone
Apple's rule is simple. On iPhone, Dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech 20. If you pause for longer than that, the session ends, so start again with the key. That is normal behavior, not a fault.
If it stops earlier, or stops because the microphone cannot hear you, check three things in this order:
- App permission. If the microphone does not work in an app, Apple says to go to Settings, tap Privacy & Security, tap Microphone, and make sure the app is enabled 7.
- The microphone openings. Apple's troubleshooting page says to "Remove any screen protectors, films, or cases from your iPhone. Clear any debris from the openings of your iPhone" 21. Apple gives this for unclear sound in calls and recordings, so it is a reasonable physical check for Dictation too.
- Low Power Mode. Some third-party guides list it as a cause. Apple's Low Power Mode page lists what the mode limits, and it reads: "Low Power Mode reduces power usage by limiting certain features" with a list that includes email fetch, automatic downloads and Background App Refresh 22. Dictation is not on that list, and Apple does not present the list as complete, so this guide does not treat Low Power Mode as a cause on Apple's evidence. If Dictation stops only in Low Power Mode, that is a finding to report to Apple Support, not a documented fix.
A pause you did not notice can end a session. Speak in phrases and keep talking, because the 30-second timer only runs while nothing is said. If the session ends in the middle of a sentence while you are still speaking, the cause is more likely the microphone or the permission than the timer.
I could not find iPhone-specific steps for AirPods in the Apple pages I opened. To test whether AirPods are the cause, remove them or turn them off and dictate with the iPhone's own microphone.
Wrong words have fixable causes: the microphone, the room and the language
Wrong words usually mean the recognizer heard the audio poorly. Distance and noise are the first checks, and research on speech recognition points the same way. Check the language as well, because Dictation follows the keyboard you use. In a 2017 study, close-talking Wall Street Journal sentences recorded in a studio had a word error rate of 3.7 percent 23. A single distant ceiling microphone in an apartment gave 12.0 percent 24, and the authors describe distant speech as dramatically worse than close-talking speech 25. The two conditions were recorded in different places, so treat the ratio of about 3.2 times as a rough guide 26.
Noise matters for the same reason. A 1996 study found that the performance of a speech recognition system degrades rapidly in the presence of ambient noise 27, and a 2017 paper says distant recognition still lacks robustness when non-stationary noise and reverberation are present 28. The practical lesson is to speak at a steady, normal volume, keep the phone close to your mouth, and move away from a television, traffic or other people talking.
For the question of how accurate Apple's speech engine is, the best public comparison I found is a test by 9to5Mac in 2025 of one 7-minute-31-second episode 29. The test ran that episode through Apple's speech interface, NVIDIA's Parakeet and Whisper Large V3 Turbo. Apple's word error rate was 10.3 percent 29, Parakeet's was 12.3 percent 30, and Whisper's was 1.5 percent 31.
That test covers one episode, and it reached Apple's speech API on a Mac 32, not the Dictation key on your iPhone. It shows a direction, not the accuracy you will see in a message. If wrong words persist after the microphone, room and language checks, read the guide to dictation mistakes and the explanation of word error rate. For the broader question, see why iPhone dictation is so bad.
If the fixes fail, try them in order before you contact Apple Support
Work through this list once, in order. Each step is the one Apple documents or the one this guide has evidence for.
- Restart the iPhone.
- In Settings, tap General, then Keyboard, and turn Enable Dictation off and on.
- Confirm your language and the keyboard you have open. Switch to Apple's keyboard with the globe key to test a third-party one.
- Turn on Wi-Fi or cellular data for languages that are not processed on the phone.
- Check Privacy & Security, then Microphone, for the app, and check Screen Time for a restriction.
- Remove any case or film, and clear the microphone openings.
- Reset all settings, as described above, only after the steps before it have failed.
If the key still does not work, contact Apple Support with your iOS version, your language, and the app where it fails, and say which steps above you tried. Write those details down before you call, because a specific report with a version number and an app name is far quicker to act on than "dictation does not work." Keep a note of the iOS version before and after any update, so you can tell whether the update or a setting changed. The same steps on a Mac are in why Mac dictation is not working, and the Windows version is Windows dictation not working. The general guide is dictation not working on any device.
If built-in Dictation still does not meet your needs, the overview of dictation apps for iPhone and Android compares the options. Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows.

Questions about this
- How do you reset dictation on iPhone?Apple has no separate reset for Dictation. Try these steps in order: restart the phone, turn Enable Dictation off and on in Settings, General, Keyboard, and turn off Voice Control if you want standard Dictation. If that fails, Reset All Settings returns settings to factory defaults and keeps your photos, messages, apps and documents, so set Enable Dictation and your languages again afterward.
- Why did dictation stop working after an iPhone update?Dictation stops working after an iPhone update most often because the switch or language changed, or because the update introduced a new on-device model that works only on some iPhones. Turn **Enable Dictation** off and on, confirm your language, and restart the phone. Reset all settings only if those steps fail, since Apple documents the reset as a last step.
- Why does iPhone dictation keep turning off?iPhone Dictation ends on its own after 30 seconds without speech, which Apple documents, so a long pause is expected. If it turns off sooner or keeps stopping, check whether Voice Control is on, whether Enable Dictation is switched on, and whether the app has microphone access. The Apple pages we read describe no other automatic stop.
- Why does iPhone dictation stop after a few words?iPhone dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech, which Apple documents, so a pause of 30 seconds or more ends the session by design. If it stops sooner, check that the app has microphone access and look for debris in the microphone openings. Some users report that certain apps stop on short pauses, and I found no Apple statement or fix for that.
- Why is dictation greyed out on my iPhone? On an iPhone, dictation is greyed out or unavailable when the **Enable Dictation** switch is off, when your language is not available in your country or region, or when a Screen Time restriction blocks it. Apple's pages do not use the words greyed out, so check the switch, the language and the network first, then Screen Time.
- Why is iPhone dictation so bad?iPhone dictation is weakest in conditions you can often change: a distant or noisy microphone, the wrong keyboard language, and names or technical words. The one independent test we found gave Apple's developer speech interface a 10.3 percent word error rate on one recording, and we found no measurement showing that it has got worse across iOS versions.
- Why is my iPhone dictating everything I say?An iPhone can type everything you say when Voice Control is on. Its Dictation mode enters every word that is not a command as text, and Apple says standard Dictation is not available while Voice Control is on. Open Settings, Accessibility, Voice Control and turn it off if you want standard Dictation. If the text doubles instead, both tools may be running, and Apple's pages do not explain that.
- Why is the dictation button missing on my iPhone keyboard? The dictation microphone key is missing from the iPhone keyboard when **Enable Dictation** is turned off, or when you are typing with a third-party keyboard that does not show the key. Turn on Enable Dictation, then switch to Apple's keyboard with the globe key: if the key returns, the third-party keyboard is the cause.
