Question · Dictation on phones and tablets
Why are voice commands not working on Android Auto?
Android Auto voice commands come from your phone's assistant, which Google is replacing with Gemini for users who have upgraded from Google Assistant. Gemini in the car needs the Gemini app on your phone, and Google says you will see a tooltip on the car display once it is available to you. If those are in place and commands still fail, we could not confirm the cause from Google's own pages.

Voice commands in Android Auto come from your phone's assistant, not from the car. Google is replacing Google Assistant with Gemini, and the Gemini version in the car needs the Gemini app on your phone. If the app is in place and you still see no response, the cause is one we could not confirm from Google's own pages. The steps below are the checks Google describes, plus an honest account of what the sources do not say.
Voice commands in the car now come from Gemini for upgraded users
Google announced in March 2025 that it would replace Google Assistant on Android phones with Gemini 1. For Android Auto, the change arrives in stages. Google says Gemini is starting to roll out to Android Auto users who have upgraded from Google Assistant to Gemini on their phones 2.
This means the assistant you use in the car depends on the assistant on your phone. The post does not say what happens for users who have not upgraded, so check which assistant your phone uses before you assume a fault in the car.
Gemini in the car needs the Gemini app on your phone
Google's launch post says the way to get started is to make sure you are using the Gemini app on your phone. You will then see a tooltip on your car display once Gemini is available to you 3.
If the tooltip never appears, Gemini may not have reached your account yet. Google says the rollout runs over the coming months 2, so a missing tooltip can simply mean you are not yet in the group that has it.
Start a command the way Google describes
Google gives three ways to start Gemini in the car: say “Hey Google,” press the mic button on the car screen, or long press the voice control button on the steering wheel 4. Try each one, because a fault in one input does not mean the others have failed. Note that the steering wheel instruction says long press, not a quick tap.
Gemini launched with 45 languages, so check yours
Google says Gemini began rolling out on Android Auto globally in 45 languages 5. The post does not list those languages. If your phone or car uses a language outside that list, commands may fail for that reason. Check the language on your phone against Google's current list before you assume a fault.
What we could not confirm about the error message
Some drivers see a message that voice commands are not available at the moment. We could not find Google's explanation of that exact message while writing this page, so we cannot say what causes it. The Android Auto troubleshooting pages from Google were not available to us, which limits what we can verify.
Third-party troubleshooting blogs suggest checking microphone permission for Android Auto and for your assistant app, and a working data connection for commands that need live information such as traffic. We could not confirm those points in Google's own pages, so treat them as things to check, not as known causes.
What to do, in order
- Confirm the Gemini app is installed on your phone and open it once.
- Look for the tooltip on the car display. If it is missing, the rollout may not have reached you yet, so check again later.
- Start a command with “Hey Google”, the car screen mic button, or a long press of the steering wheel voice button.
- Check that your language is on Google's current list. Gemini launched with 45 languages 5.
- If commands still fail, note the exact message on the car screen and your car's make and model before you contact Google's Android Auto support.
How this differs from voice typing
Voice commands in the car are a different feature from voice typing on your phone. Voice typing turns your speech into text in a text field, and the troubleshooting is about the phone's keyboard and microphone. The question on the missing microphone key and the question on the permission error cover those cases. Our guide to fixing Android voice typing does not cover car commands, and the overview of dictation on phones and tablets explains the other options.
