Dictation
Dictation Not Working? How to Fix It on Any Device
When dictation fails, the cause is almost always one of five things, and you can check them in a fixed order: the feature is off or restricted, the app has no microphone permission, the wrong microphone is selected, a network or language the engine needs is missing, or the field refuses dictated text. Work down that list, then use the guide for your device for the exact menu steps.

How it is calculated
Dictation that types nothing, or that stops as soon as you start, almost always has one of five causes. Check them in this order: the feature is off or restricted, the app has no microphone permission, the wrong microphone is selected, a network connection or language that the engine needs is missing, or the field does not accept dictated text. The Apple and Microsoft troubleshooting pages check the same things in roughly this sequence, so the order works on any device. Only the menu names change.
Five causes explain nearly every dictation failure, and checking them in order finds the fault fast
Apple's Mac troubleshooting page starts with whether Dictation is on in Keyboard settings, then the language and region, then the keyboard shortcut, then the microphone and its input volume, then background noise and the network ( Apple, If Dictation on Mac doesn't work as expected). Microsoft's Windows checks cover the same ground: the microphone, microphone permission, the language, and the input level ( Microsoft, Voice typing isn't working in Windows).
Use the first step that does not pass, and fix it before you go on.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| No microphone key or Dictation option at all | Feature off, or restricted by Screen Time | Turn Dictation on in settings |
| The key responds, but no text appears | Microphone permission, or the wrong input device | Permission, then the selected microphone |
| Text is poor or lags on a Bluetooth headset | Headset microphone on a call connection | Built-in or wired microphone |
| Works on Wi-Fi, fails offline | The engine needs the network | Network, and the on-device setting |
| An error about the language, or wrong words | Language missing or set wrong | Install the language, match your speech |
| Dictation stops after a pause | Silence timeout, not a fault | Start it again |
| Refuses text in one box | Secure field, or the app | Try a plain text box |
Each row is explained in a section below. If you use a phone, the same ideas apply, but the menus differ. The platform guides at the end list the exact steps.
No microphone icon at all means the feature is turned off or restricted
If you cannot see a microphone key or a Dictation option, the feature is off or blocked. On a Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Keyboard in the sidebar, and turn Dictation on. Apple says to click Enable if a prompt appears ( Apple, Use Dictation on Mac). On an iPhone, go to Settings, tap General, tap Keyboard, then turn on Enable Dictation ( Apple, Dictate text on iPhone).
On a Mac, Voice Control can take the place of Dictation. In macOS 27, when Voice Control is on, you use it to dictate text, and standard Dictation is not available 1.
The Windows check is quicker. Voice typing starts with the Windows key + H on a hardware keyboard, and on a touch keyboard you press the microphone button instead ( Microsoft, Use voice typing to talk instead of type on your PC). If that does nothing, check the requirements: an internet connection, a working microphone, and the cursor in a text box 2. A restriction can also hide the feature. Apple's Screen Time settings let an administrator choose which apps and features can be used, and Dictation is one of them 3. If Dictation is restricted, an administrator has to change that setting. If the key or shortcut does nothing rather than missing entirely, the question why the dictation shortcut is not working covers that case, and the question why dictation is on but not typing covers the case where the feature looks enabled.
An icon that listens but types nothing means the wrong microphone or a blocked permission
When the microphone key responds but no text appears, the audio is not reaching the engine. Two causes account for most cases, and both are in the settings.
The first is permission. On a Mac, Apple says you can decide which apps are allowed to use the microphone 4. You manage that list under Privacy & Security, then Microphone, where each app has its own switch ( Apple, Control access to the microphone on Mac). On Windows, voice typing needs microphone access, which you fix under Start, Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone, where Microphone access must be turned on 5. Microsoft's permission article adds that desktop apps have their own switch 6. On an iPhone, Apple says that if the microphone does not work in an app, you should go to Settings, tap Microphone, and make sure the app is enabled 7.
The second cause is the wrong device. If your Mac has no built-in microphone, connect an external one and select it in Sound or Keyboard settings ( Apple's Mac troubleshooting page). If the Mac does not respond to your voice, select the microphone in Sound settings and increase its input volume 8. Microsoft's guide says to make sure the microphone you want is selected under Settings, and to adjust the input level if no text appears after you speak ( Microsoft, Voice typing isn't working in Windows).
Permission problems are easy to miss, because the microphone key can appear and the app can look ready while no text arrives. After you change the permission or the input device, test again before you change anything else.
A Bluetooth headset can switch to a lower-quality call microphone
A headset's microphone can change the audio path that dictation uses. Unity's developer documentation for its Vivox voice service describes the trade-off: the high-quality stereo connection used for music is different from the voice connection used for calls, and 9. If the headset's microphone is in use, the audio the engine receives may come over that call connection.
The practical fix is to choose the microphone on purpose. Select the built-in microphone, or a wired headset with its own microphone, in your sound settings, then test dictation again. Apple's Mac page makes a similar point about rooms rather than headsets: in a noisy room or one with excessive echo, it says, a headset microphone may help 10. The microphone guide explains how to choose the microphone.
Dictation that needs the network stops when the connection does, and on-device dictation does not
Whether dictation needs the internet depends on the platform, the language and a setting. The clearest case is Windows. Microsoft says voice typing needs an internet connection, a working microphone and the cursor in a text box 2. Voice typing converts speech to text using online speech recognition 11, and the setting for that is under Start, Settings, Privacy & security, Speech. If voice typing fails with no clear error, check that setting and your connection.
On an iPhone, the picture is different. Apple says Dictation is processed on the iPhone in many languages, and that no internet connection is required 12. The Mac is in between. Apple says you may need an internet connection for Dictation, and that Keyboard settings show whether your voice input is processed on the device or sent to Siri servers 13. Apple's privacy policy says your device shows in Keyboard settings whether audio and transcripts are processed on the device 14. Where they are not, the dictated text is sent to Apple's servers, and it is not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation 15.
| Platform | Where the speech is recognized | Connection needed | Where to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows voice typing | Online speech recognition, which Microsoft describes as powered by Azure Speech services 16 | Yes | Speech setting under Privacy & security |
| iPhone Dictation | On the iPhone, in many languages | No, in those languages | Enable Dictation under General, Keyboard |
| Mac Dictation | On the device for some languages, and sent to Apple otherwise | Sometimes | Keyboard settings indicator |
If you rely on dictation without a connection, check the indicator and the language list before you assume it works offline.
A language that is missing or set wrong stops dictation or produces the wrong words
Each platform ties dictation to a language and a region, and a mismatch shows up in different ways. Windows reports it directly: "Voice typing isn't available in the current language" 17. Microsoft's fix is to install a supported language. To change the language voice typing uses, you change the input language you use 18, and the troubleshooting page gives the shortcut Windows logo key + Spacebar to switch between your installed languages.
On a Mac, Dictation is not available in every language or region, and features vary by language 19. Apple's checklist says to choose the correct language and region in Keyboard settings. If you use more than one language, Apple lets you switch as you dictate by clicking the language next to the cursor, or by pressing the Globe key and choosing a language ( Apple, Use Dictation on Mac) 20.
A language setting does not fix every wrong word. Apple's own example of a recognition error is "flour" when you meant "flower." The page says ambiguous text is underlined in blue, and you click the word and choose the alternative ( Apple, Use Dictation on Mac). That is a correction step, not a fault.
Dictation stops on its own after a pause, which is a timeout rather than a fault
If dictation ends after a few words, check whether you paused. Apple's Mac Dictation guide says Dictation stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds 21. The iPhone page gives the same rule: remain silent for 30 seconds, and Dictation stops automatically 22.
A timeout is a stop, not an error. Press the Dictation key again to continue. On a Mac, Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout 23 while you keep speaking, so the stop follows silence, not the length of your text. The question why dictation keeps stopping covers the other causes of a stop.
Windows turns off Fluid dictation in password and PIN boxes by design
Some boxes are built to refuse dictation. In Windows, Fluid dictation is automatically disabled in secure fields such as passwords or PINs, to protect your privacy 24. That is a deliberate rule, not a fault, so use the keyboard for those fields.
If the box is an ordinary text field and dictation still does nothing, the app is the likely cause. Test in a plain text box, such as a new note or a new document, to find out whether the problem follows the app or the device. The question why dictation works in some apps but not others lists the common app cases, and the guide to voice typing in your apps covers the apps that run their own voice typing.
Wrong words come from the room and the microphone, and benchmarks show the size of the effect
Dictation that types the wrong words is a different problem from dictation that types nothing, and it usually has an acoustic cause. Apple advises avoiding background noise and making sure the microphone is not blocked by clothing or your body while you speak ( Apple, If Dictation on Mac doesn't work as expected). A noise-canceling microphone is one way to reduce the room's share of the sound.
Research benchmarks show how much conditions matter. In an OpenAI preprint on Whisper, the Large V2 model had a word error rate of 2.7 percent on LibriSpeech Clean, a test of clean read speech 25. On Switchboard, another test in the same table, the error rate was 13.8 percent 26. On CHiME6, the rate rose to 25.5 percent 27, which is about 9.4 times the clean figure 28. The paper says its test audio covers telephone and VoIP calls, among other conditions 29.
These are benchmarks of a general model, not of your app on your desk. Use them to see the direction of the effect: harder recordings produce more errors. The fixes are the same as in the earlier sections: keep the microphone unobstructed, avoid background noise, and choose the input device on purpose. The background noise guide covers the room side in detail.
The platform guides hold the exact fix for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android
If all five checks pass and dictation still fails, the cause is usually specific to one app or one device. Write down the device, the operating system version, the app and any error text before you change more settings. The platform guides are organized the same way, by system and symptom, and the steps change with each system release, so the version matters.
This guide gives the order of checks. The platform guides give the menus, the error messages and the fixes for each system. Use the one that matches your device, then return here if the same symptom remains.

Questions about this
- Why does dictation keep stopping?Dictation stops by itself in one documented case: on a Mac or an iPhone, after 30 seconds with no speech. Other possible causes, such as a browser-based tool, a lost connection, or a headset that changes its audio path, are not confirmed as stop causes by the sources we read. If dictation stops within a few seconds, check the tool and the connection first, because we found no official cause for stops after one word.
- Why does dictation work in some apps but not others?Dictation is documented to type anywhere you can type on a Mac, but the exceptions the sources describe include search boxes, Windows password and PIN fields, and apps such as Google Docs and Word, which run their own voice features. When it fails in one app, test a plain text field first: if dictation works there, the problem is the app or the field, not the feature.
- Why does voice typing say unable to receive audio? The message means voice typing did not get sound from your microphone, so check the audio path in this order: microphone permission, the input device and its volume, and whether another app is holding the microphone. On Windows, voice typing also needs an internet connection. I could not find the exact phrase "unable to receive audio" in the Microsoft or Google help pages I checked, so the fixes below come from the messages those pages do document.
- Why is dictation not working in Apple Notes, Messages and Pages? In Apple Notes, Messages and Pages, dictation that fails in all three points to a device-level setting: the feature is off, the microphone is blocked, or the language is wrong. If it works in one app and not another, the field or app is the cause. In Safari, a microphone button on a website uses the same speech engine as Siri, so Siri must be on, and a search box is a field Apple does not treat as general text dictation.
- Why is dictation not working in CarPlay or my car?Dictation in CarPlay or a car can fail for one of three reasons: Siri is off on the iPhone, Screen Time restrictions stop CarPlay from detecting the phone, or the car's own voice system is faulty. Restart the iPhone and the car, make sure Siri is on, and check Screen Time. If a Toyota's voice system freezes, ask a dealer whether a software update listed for your model applies.
- Why is dictation not working in Gemini, Grok or Codex?Dictation in Gemini, Grok or Codex fails for the same reasons as in any other app: the app or browser has no microphone permission, the wrong input is selected, or the service that turns speech into text cannot receive the audio. I could not find official dictation troubleshooting for Gemini or Grok, and the Codex CLI documentation I opened does not describe voice input. Test the system's own dictation in those apps before you assume the app is at fault.
- Why is dictation not working on Apple TV?Dictation on Apple TV can stop working for one of three reasons: Siri dictation is turned off in Settings, your country or region may not support it, or the Siri language is not the one you speak. Check the switch first, under Settings, General, Dictation, then check your region and language.
- Why is dictation not working with AirPods?Dictation with AirPods can fail because the AirPods are not the microphone in use: the Mac may not be using them as its input, the headset may have switched to a lower-quality call connection, or another app may be holding the microphone. Check which device the Mac uses for Dictation, quit any app that uses the microphone, then test with the built-in microphone to confirm whether the AirPods are the cause.
- Why is dictation on but not typing anything?Dictation that is switched on but types nothing usually cannot hear you. The causes Apple and Microsoft document are the wrong microphone selected, microphone permission turned off for the app you are typing in, and a Mac with no built-in microphone and no external one connected. Check the microphone input and the app permission first, then test in a plain text box.
- Why is my microphone not working for dictation?Dictation gets no sound for one of two reasons: the app is not allowed to use the microphone, or dictation is listening to a different input device from the one you are speaking into. Check the permission first, then select the microphone you want in sound settings and raise its input volume. If words appear but are wrong, the cause is the room or the distance, not the setting.
- Why is talk to text not working on Google Messages?Yes, you can talk to text in Google Messages, but the microphone is the keyboard's, not the app's. Tap the message box, then tap the microphone at the top of the keyboard, which is Gboard on many Android phones, including Pixel. If it is missing or silent, the usual causes are a different active keyboard, a blocked recording permission, or a language setting that does not match your device.
- Why is the dictation shortcut not working?A dictation shortcut that does nothing means either the key you press is not the key Dictation is set to use, or the feature is not running. On a Mac, check the shortcut in Keyboard settings, and test the feature with Edit > Start Dictation. On Windows, Win+H needs an internet connection, a working microphone and the cursor in a text box.
