Question · Dictation on phones and tablets
How do you delete the last word with iPhone dictation?
Apple's iPhone commands delete text by naming it: say 'delete' followed by the exact words you want removed. We found no 'delete last word' command in Apple's pages, so for your last dictation, say 'undo' instead.

Apple's iPhone commands remove text by naming it. You say delete, then the words you want removed, and the phone deletes that phrase 1. We found no "delete last word" command on any Apple page we checked. If the last thing you dictated was wrong, say undo, which reverses a change 2. Apple's page does not say how far back undo reaches, so try it first when the mistake is in your last dictation.
Say "delete" followed by the exact words
Apple's dictation page says to edit text by saying select or delete followed by the phrase you want to change 1. In practice:
- Find the words in your text, and note them exactly as they appear.
- Say "delete" and then those words. The phrase you name is removed from the text.
- Read the line again. If the words are still there, say the command again with a shorter phrase.
The phrase has to match your text closely. If the phone hears it differently, the command will not find those words, so keep the phrase short and check the result after each command.
Undo reverses a change, and redo repeats a command
When the mistake is in your most recent dictation, undo is the simplest command. Apple's page says you can say undo or redo to reverse a change or repeat a command 2. Say undo right after the error, before you dictate anything else.
Say "change" to replace a word in place
Often you do not want to delete a word, only to correct it. Apple's example is saying "Change tea to T-E-E" to fix a spelling 3. The pattern is change, then the wrong word, then to, then the right word. Use this when you know the word you want.
Apple's pages do not document a "delete last word" command
The phrase is common in other products. In Microsoft 365 Dictation, saying "delete" by itself removes the last word or punctuation mark before the cursor 4. That is a different product. On iPhone, Apple's documented form takes a phrase after "delete", not a bare word.
A spoken fix can also be misheard. A 2006 study with a simulated dictation interface found that spoken corrections are often misrecognized too, which costs time 5. That is one reason to keep spoken edits short.
It depends on your language and iPhone
Three conditions matter, and they are easy to miss.
- Language. Apple says these editing commands are available in U.S. English 6, so in other languages they may not work. An older iOS 18 page gives a looser limit, U.S. English on supported models 7, so check the current page for your model.
- Device. The same Apple statement limits the editing commands to iPhone 12 and later, except iPhone SE 6. On an older phone, use the keyboard instead.
- Time. Dictation stops on its own after 30 seconds without speech 8. If you pause to think between an edit and the next sentence, turn Dictation on again before you continue.
For editing that goes beyond these commands, Apple's Voice Control is a separate accessibility feature. We did not verify its iPhone command list for this page, so check Apple's pages for your model before you rely on it.
What to do
- If the last dictation is wrong, say undo at once.
- For a phrase you dictated earlier, say delete and then the exact words, then read the line again.
- For a single wrong word you want to replace, say change, the wrong word, to, and the right word.
- For a single character or a small fix, use the keyboard's delete key.
- If the commands do nothing, check that you are dictating in U.S. English on iPhone 12 or later, and that Dictation is still on.
If the wrong word keeps coming back, the cause is recognition rather than editing. Read why iPhone dictation spells your name wrong for names, and how to dictate punctuation on iPhone for marks. For the same question on a Mac, see how to delete a word with Mac dictation, and for voice editing in general see how to delete text by voice. The glossary entry on voice control explains that feature. The full set of iPhone commands is in the iPhone dictation commands guide.
