Question · Dictation on phones and tablets
Why did dictation stop working after an iPhone update?
Dictation stops working after an iPhone update most often because the switch or language changed, or because the update introduced a new on-device model that works only on some iPhones. Turn **Enable Dictation** off and on, confirm your language, and restart the phone. Reset all settings only if those steps fail, since Apple documents the reset as a last step.

An iOS update can stop dictation working for three reasons: it can change a setting, add a new on-device model that only some iPhones can run, or leave a fault that a restart clears. I found no Apple statement that an iOS 27 update broke dictation for everyone. The checks below separate these cases, and they start with the steps that cost nothing.
Check whether the update changed a setting
Start with the switch. Apple's path is Settings, then General, then Keyboard, and then Enable Dictation 1. Turn it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. Then confirm the language of the keyboard you are using, because dictation follows that language. An update that adds or changes a keyboard can leave you on a language you did not intend.
Check whether the update added a new model you may not have
With iOS 27, Apple added an upgraded dictation model. Apple says that, with Apple Intelligence, "dictation uses an on-device model to improve spelling, punctuation, and capitalization," in English on the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air or later 2. The upgraded model also has a memory limit. MacRumors reported that the standard iPhone 17 is excluded because it has 8 GB of memory, below the 12 GB the model needs 3. If your iPhone is not on the list, the upgraded dictation will not appear, and that is not a fault.
In the first iOS 27 developer beta, the upgraded dictation was not on by default. MacRumors reported on June 22, 2026 that it was off in that beta 4. I did not confirm whether the public release keeps that default, so check the Keyboard settings on your own phone for an Advanced Dictation switch.
The upgraded model works the same without a connection
If you use the upgraded dictation, one difference is worth knowing. 9to5Mac reports that the iOS 27 AI dictation runs only on the on-device model, so its transcription quality is the same whether or not the phone has a data connection 5. Because the quality is the same either way, a failure that appears only when you are offline does not point to the model. Check the app's microphone permission and the language setting first.
What forums report, and what Apple has not confirmed
Some users in Apple's forums and on MacRumors describe dictation that misses sentence starts and ends, lags or rewrites words after an iOS 27 update. Those are individual reports. I found no Apple acknowledgement of a fault that affects every iPhone, and a later reply in one thread said that a point release had fixed their language. Treat those reports as a reason to check the release notes for your version, not as proof of a bug in your phone.
Restart first, then reset only if needed
Apple's guidance for system problems is to restart the iPhone first and to reset all settings only if a restart does not help 6. A reset is the last step, not the first, for three reasons. It returns settings to their defaults, including the keyboard dictionary. It does not delete your photos, messages, apps or documents 7. Note your settings before you reset, then set Enable Dictation and your languages again and test in a note.
If dictation still fails after a restart and a reset, contact Apple Support with your exact iOS version, the update you installed, the app where it fails and the steps you tried. The version number matters most, because the same symptom can have different causes on different releases.

For the whole set of checks in order, see our guide to iPhone dictation that is not working. For the question of whether the newer dictation is better, read is dictation better in iOS 27, and the overview is dictation and voice to text on iPhone and Android. The Siri and Apple Intelligence entries explain the features the new model belongs to.
