Question · Dictation on phones and tablets
How do you fix “no permission to enable voice typing” on Android?
Open Gboard's permission for the microphone and set it to allow access while you use the app, which is the first fix Guiding Tech recommends. If the error remains, turn on the phone-wide Microphone access switch, because a device privacy setting can block the microphone even when the keyboard's own permission is on.

The error “No Permission to Enable Voice Typing” means the keyboard cannot use your phone's microphone. The fix is a permission change, not a reinstall. Set the keyboard's own microphone permission first, then check the phone-wide microphone switch. Guiding Tech names this exact error in the title of its troubleshooting guide 1, and the steps below follow its order.
Give the keyboard microphone access first
The first time Gboard uses the microphone, Android asks for a recording permission with three choices: While using app, Only this time or Don't allow 2. If you chose Don't allow, the error follows. Changing it is the first fix.
Guiding Tech's first fix is to set Gboard's microphone permission to Allow only while using the app. Its path is Settings, Apps, Gboard, Permissions, then Microphone 3. The article does not name the Android version where those menus apply, so the names may differ on your phone. The guide to fixing Android voice typing has the same steps in a table with the other causes.
A phone-wide microphone switch can block the keyboard
Permission has two layers. Guiding Tech says to turn on the Microphone access toggle under Settings, Security and privacy, Privacy, and that this is a separate switch from the app permission 4.
Guiding Tech says a device privacy setting can curtail microphone access even when Gboard's app permission is on, and that this can still show the “can't enable voice typing” error 5. So a correct keyboard setting does not prove the error is solved. Check both layers before you move on.
Why the error matters beyond the key
When the microphone is denied, voice typing cannot work at all. Guiding Tech says that when microphone permission is denied for an app, the app cannot detect the user's voice 6. This is different from a missing key. A missing key points to a settings change, while a denied permission stops the keyboard from hearing you even when the key is visible. The question on the missing microphone key covers that case.
Reinstalling is the last step, and it erases settings
Guiding Tech lists reinstalling Gboard among its basic fixes, but warns that uninstalling it deletes all app settings, data and features 7. Run the permission checks first. If you reinstall, note your Gboard settings, such as languages and voice typing, because they will need to be set again.
If the error began after a Gboard update, some guides suggest rolling back to an older version. DroidWin describes the steps: open Gboard's app info, tap the overflow icon, select Uninstall Updates and then Uninstall 8. This is a workaround, not a confirmed fix, and the sources we read do not show that an update caused this error. Only try it if the error started right after an update, and only after the permission checks above have failed.
It depends on the keyboard and the phone
The error is about the keyboard you type with, so check the permission for that keyboard. The guide to fixing Android voice typing lists the permission steps in one table. If a label on your phone reads differently, look for the closest name before deciding a setting is missing.
The first prompt offers Only this time as well as While using app 2. Pick While using app if you want voice typing to keep working, because the other choice is limited to that one time.
What to do, in order
- Open the keyboard's app permissions and set the Microphone permission to allow access while using the app.
- Open Security and privacy, then Privacy, and turn on the Microphone access switch.
- Return to a text field and try voice typing again.
- If the error remains, update the keyboard in the Play Store, then check the permissions once more.
- Only if all of these fail, consider a rollback or a reinstall, and save your settings before you do.
