Question · Dictation on phones and tablets
Why does iPhone dictation stop after a few words?
iPhone dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech, which Apple documents, so a pause of 30 seconds or more ends the session by design. If it stops sooner, check that the app has microphone access and look for debris in the microphone openings. Some users report that certain apps stop on short pauses, and I found no Apple statement or fix for that.

Dictation on an iPhone stops after a few words for one of three reasons. The first is the 30-second rule, which is normal behavior and documented by Apple. The second is that the app has no microphone permission, or the microphone is partly blocked. The third is a short pause in a specific app, which Apple has not documented. Work through them in that order, because the first one needs no action at all.
The 30-second rule is documented, not a fault
Apple says that on iPhone, if you "remain silent for 30 seconds," then "Dictation stops automatically" 1. If you stop speaking for 30 seconds, the session ends and you have to tap the microphone key again. This is the reason it can seem to stop in the middle of your thinking, though it only stops when nothing is said.
The rule is about silence, not about how long you have been speaking. A long dictation with steady speech does not end at 30 seconds. Apple's iPad page describes the same 30-second stop, so the rule is the same on iPhone and iPad 2. Speak in phrases, keep talking through short pauses, and you will avoid most of these stops.
Check app permission before anything else
If dictation stops early in one app but works in others, check that app's permission. Apple says that if the microphone does not work in an app, you should go to Settings, tap Microphone, and make sure the app is enabled 3. Do this for the app where the problem happens. Then test in Notes. If dictation runs for longer in Notes than in the other app, the problem is that app and not the phone.
Clean the microphone openings
Apple's first physical check is to "Remove any screen protectors, films, or cases from your iPhone" and to "Clear any debris from the openings of your iPhone" 4. Apple gives that advice for unclear sound in calls and recordings, not specifically for dictation. A partly blocked microphone gives the phone less of your voice to work with, so it is a reasonable first physical check. Take off the case, wipe the openings gently, and test again in Notes.
Pauses in some apps can end dictation early
Some users report that certain apps stop dictation on a short pause, even when the 30-second rule is not reached. I found Apple Community threads that describe this in Safari, WhatsApp and Facebook. I did not find an Apple statement that explains the cause, and I did not confirm any fix for it.
Some third-party articles also list Low Power Mode as a cause. I did not find that connection in Apple's documentation, so this guide does not list it as a cause. If dictation stops only in Low Power Mode, report that to Apple Support with your iOS version.
What to do if it still stops early
Test once in Notes to see whether the problem is the app or the phone. Restart the iPhone, then recheck the app's microphone permission. Apple's guidance for problems with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or other system features is to restart first, and to reset all settings only if a restart does not help 5.
If the cut-offs continue, contact Apple Support with the app name, your iOS version and whether the stop happens on a pause or after a fixed time. A specific report with an app name and a time gives Apple something to reproduce. Before you call, note whether the stop happens in one app or every app, because that single detail separates an app bug from a phone problem.
