Question · Dictation on phones and tablets
Why is dictation not working on my Apple Watch?
Restart the watch and its paired iPhone first, since Apple recommends a restart when something on the watch is not working right. If that fails, check that Dictation is turned on, that your language is on Apple's list, and that the iPhone's keyboard languages match. A faulty microphone is also possible.

When dictation fails on Apple Watch, the causes we found in Apple's documentation and in reports fall into four groups: the watch or its iPhone needs a restart, your language is not one the watch supports, the microphone is faulty, or the iPhone is too far away, which Apple says matters for some watch features. Work through them in that order, because the first step costs the least. Our full guide to dictation on Apple Watch covers the steps to start dictation, and this page covers what to do when it stops.
Restart the watch and the iPhone first
Apple says that if something on Apple Watch is not working right, you should restart the watch and its paired iPhone 1. Restarting costs the least, so do it before you change any settings.
To restart the watch, press and hold the side button until the sliders appear, tap the power icon, then drag the Power Off slider to the right. To turn it on again, hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Apple also notes that you cannot restart the watch while it is charging, so take it off the charger first ( Apple's restart guide). Then restart the iPhone and try dictation again.
Dictation can stop because your language is not on the watch's list
Apple marks dictation on Apple Watch as not available in all languages 2. Apple's watchOS 27 table lists on-device dictation for 14 language and regional variants 3. A language can work on the iPhone and still be missing from that list.
The watch takes its dictation language from the keyboard set for the same app on the paired iPhone, according to Cult of Mac's report of Apple's rule 4. If the language is missing, add it on the iPhone. Apple says you can add keyboards "for writing or using Dictation in different languages" on an iPhone 5. The steps to change the language are on the question about changing the dictation language on Apple Watch.
Dictation can fail when the watch microphone is faulty
A microphone fault is less common, but it does happen. In 2022, a memo from Apple, relayed by MacRumors, described a microphone bug that stopped Siri, Dictation and voice memos from hearing the wearer. The memo said that restarting the watch may fix it temporarily, and that the problem is not hardware related 6.
We did not find a confirmed fix for that bug in our search, and the report is from 2022. If you see the same symptoms, restart the watch, install the latest watchOS update and check whether dictation works in another app. If it still fails, contact Apple Support, which can check the microphone. Third-party guides also list a protective case that covers the small microphone opening as a cause, so take off any case and test again. We did not find an Apple page that makes that claim.
Dictation may need the iPhone nearby
Apple says that some features on Apple Watch require an iPhone nearby 7. That footnote does not name dictation, so Apple's pages do not say whether dictation needs the phone close by.
Keep the iPhone nearby while you test. If dictation works with the phone close and fails when it is in another room, you have learned something useful, even though Apple's pages do not explain it.
It depends on the watch model and on where you are
- A language on the list, but dictation still fails. Apple's table covers a set of languages, and its pages do not say where the speech is processed for each one. Test in the place where you plan to use it.
- Dictation says it is disabled. The usual fix there is a settings change, covered on the question on why Apple Watch says dictation is disabled.
What to do, in order
- Restart the watch and then the iPhone.
- Turn on Dictation on the iPhone under Settings, General, Keyboard, then Enable Dictation, and confirm the prompt if one appears 8.
- Check that the keyboard language on the iPhone matches the language you want, and add the language if it is missing.
- Keep the iPhone nearby and test dictation in a messaging app.
- Check the microphone: remove any case that covers it and make sure watchOS is up to date.
- If none of these works, contact Apple Support.
If dictation works on the iPhone but not on the watch, the watch settings and the language match are the likeliest places to look. If it fails on both, the iPhone's own dictation guide is the next place to look, and the iPhone dictation not working guide covers that device in more detail. For the wider picture, see the overview of dictation on phones and tablets. A related iPhone question is whether dictation stops after a few words.
For the meaning of the term, see dictation. Apple's voice assistant is covered in the Siri term.
