Dictation on phones and tablets
Dictation on Apple Watch: How to Use and Fix It
Tap the input button at the bottom right of any text field, choose Dictation, then speak. On watchOS 27, Apple lists on-device dictation for 14 language variants, and the watch takes its dictation language from the iPhone keyboard for each app. When dictation stops, restart the watch and its iPhone, then check the Dictation setting and the keyboard languages on both devices.

29 percentpercent
Apple's on-device dictation list for watchOS 27 has about 29 percent as many variants as the on-device list for iOS 27.
How it is calculated
To dictate on Apple Watch, tap the input button in any text field and choose Dictation, then speak. Apple's table for watchOS 27 lists on-device dictation for 14 language and regional variants 1, but it does not name the watch models that run them. When dictation stops working, restart the watch and its paired iPhone, then check the Dictation setting and the keyboard languages on both devices.
Tap the input button in any text field to start dictation
The input button sits at the bottom right of a text field, such as a new message or a search field. It shows which input method is active, and tapping it lets you change the method 2. Apple's guide lists three choices: the onscreen keyboard, Scribble and dictation ( Apple's guide to entering text on Apple Watch).
To start dictation:
- Tap a text field, such as a new message or a search field.
- Tap the input button at the bottom right of the screen.
- Choose Dictation, which Apple describes as having your speech transcribed to text, then speak.
If the input button does not offer Dictation, the language or your watch model may be the reason. The language limit and the SE 3 note are in the section on languages below.
Speak punctuation, emoji and corrections by name during dictation
Apple's list of dictation controls on the watch covers more than words. Each control below is set out in Apple's guide to entering text ( Apple's guide).
| To do this | What to do on the watch |
|---|---|
| Add punctuation | Say the mark's name, such as "question mark" |
| Add emoji | Say the name followed by "emoji", such as "thumbs up emoji" |
| Replace a word | Tap the word, then say a different one |
| Move the cursor | Turn the Digital Crown |
| Select all | Double-tap the screen |
| Erase | Tap the Erase control |
Apple says you can speak punctuation while dictating, with the example "Did it arrive question mark." 3 The watch guide describes spoken punctuation only. It does not describe automatic punctuation of the kind that some other Apple devices add as you speak, so you should say the mark's name when you need it. The dictation punctuation guide covers the spoken forms on other devices.
Emoji work the same way. Apple's example is "thumbs up emoji" 4. To correct a word, tap it and say the replacement 5.
Dictation on Apple Watch is not available in every language
Apple marks dictation as not available in all languages 6. The same limit applies to Scribble and the onscreen keyboard in Apple's table 7. For the onscreen keyboard, Apple adds that it is not available on Apple Watch SE 3 7.
Apple's entry for dictation names only the language limit and gives no SE 3 exception. Apple does not say in plain words that SE 3 supports dictation, so if the input button on your SE 3 does not offer Dictation, check the watch's own input options and the language list in the next section, rather than assume the model is at fault.
If your language is missing, you have two ways to fix it: add a keyboard on the iPhone (covered below), or use the iPhone itself to enter the text. The dictation languages guide for iPhone and Android explains how device language lists differ, and the change dictation language guide covers the other devices.
Apple lists 14 on-device languages for watchOS 27 but names no watch models
The watchOS 27 feature table has a separate list for on-device dictation. It includes Cantonese (Hong Kong), English (Australia), English (Canada), English (Great Britain), English (India), English (United Kingdom), English (United States), French (France), German (Germany), Japanese (Japan), Mandarin Chinese (China mainland), Spanish (Mexico), Spanish (Spain) and Spanish (United States). That makes 14 entries 1.
The table is the only Apple source we found for this list. It does not say which Apple Watch models run on-device dictation, so the list tells you which languages are covered, not which watch you need. It also does not say what happens to a dictation session in a language that is not on the list.
The iPhone list is longer. By our count, Apple's iOS 27 table has 48 variants for on-device and modeless dictation 8. That puts the watch's on-device list at 29 percent of the iPhone list 9. Both tables come from Apple for the same year, but they are different lists, so read the gap as a sign that the watch covers fewer languages on-device, not as an exact measure of coverage.
For a language on the 14-variant list, Apple's table describes on-device dictation. For any other language, Apple's pages do not say where the speech is processed. The next section explains what Apple does and does not say about that.
Apple's pages do not say where watch dictation is processed
For iPhone, Apple says that in many languages dictation is processed on the device and that no internet connection is required 10. Apple's watch pages make no equivalent statement, and the watch feature table does not give one either.
Apple's general privacy page for Dictation says that your device shows in Keyboard settings whether dictated audio and transcripts are processed on the device or sent to Apple 11. Dictation sent to Apple's servers is not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation 12. Those statements cover Apple's dictation in general. We did not find a watch version of the same page, so do not read them as a watch-specific promise. The Apple dictation privacy guide sets out what Apple keeps and what you can delete, and the Improve Siri and Dictation term explains the opt-in.
Apple also describes the iPhone as a second input for the watch. If your paired iPhone is nearby, you can use it to enter text 13. The watch feature table adds that some features on Apple Watch require an iPhone nearby 14. Neither source says that dictation fails when the iPhone is away, and we did not find a source that says it works away from the iPhone. Test dictation where you plan to use it before you rely on it.
Continue a watch dictation on the iPhone through the keyboard notification
Apple's steps for the handoff are short. On Apple Watch, start dictating or entering text. On the iPhone, tap the notification for Apple Watch Keyboard Input, then continue dictating or typing ( Apple's guide). This is useful when a long message is easier to finish on the phone, and it means the iPhone's own iPhone dictation guide applies to the second half of the message.
Cult of Mac reports that the watch's dictation language follows the iPhone keyboard for each app
Apple's rule for the watch's dictation language, as quoted by Cult of Mac, is that the language follows the keyboard language for the same app on the iPhone 15. The same article reports that changing the keyboard language on the iPhone for a message or an app also changes the watch's dictation language ( Cult of Mac). We could not locate Apple's own page with that wording, so treat it as Apple's stated rule as reported, not as a page you can check.
Changing the language on the watch is more local. iGeeksBlog reports that the change "is limited to that specific app and will not change your default Dictation language in any other app" 16 ( iGeeksBlog). For the onscreen keyboard, Apple's guide describes a different control: if you have set up more than one language, you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen to choose a different language keyboard 17.
To add a language that is missing from the watch, add a keyboard on the iPhone 18. iGeeksBlog's steps are to open Settings, tap General, tap Keyboard, tap Keyboards, then choose Add New Keyboard ( iGeeksBlog).
A language can also stick. A Cult of Mac reviewer's watch kept dictating in Catalan even though the iPhone keyboard was English. Removing the extra languages from the iPhone keyboard list did not fix it on the first attempt. What worked was removing all languages except English from both the iPhone's Keyboards list and its Language & Region settings, then trying again ( Cult of Mac). That is one reviewer's experience, not a documented fix, but it shows where to look.
Dictation needs the right settings on both the iPhone and the watch
Dictation depends on settings on both devices, and the paths differ. The table lists the settings we checked and where each path comes from.
| Device | Setting | Path | Where the path comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Enable Dictation | Settings, General, Keyboard | Apple's iPhone dictation guide |
| iPhone | Keyboards (dictation languages) | Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards | iGeeksBlog |
| iPhone | Language and region | Settings, General, Language and Region | Cult of Mac |
| Apple Watch | Dictation toggle | Settings, General, Dictation | iGeeksBlog |
On the iPhone, Apple says to turn on Dictation in the Settings app under General, then Keyboard, by turning on Enable Dictation and confirming the prompt 19. On the watch, iGeeksBlog gives the path as General, then Dictation, with a toggle to turn it on ( iGeeksBlog). We did not find an Apple page that gives that watch path, so check the menus on your watch, because watchOS menus change between versions.
Start with a restart or a settings change when dictation stops
When dictation stops, work through these steps in order. The restart comes first because it costs the least.
- Restart the watch and the iPhone. Apple says that if something isn't working right, you should try restarting your Apple Watch and its paired iPhone 20. To turn the watch off, press and hold the side button until the sliders appear, then drag the Power Off slider to the right. To turn it on, hold the side button until the Apple logo appears ( Apple's restart steps).
- Confirm Dictation is on on both devices. Use the paths in the table above.
- Match the keyboard language on the iPhone. The watch follows the iPhone keyboard for each app, so add the language if it is missing and remove extras if the watch picks the wrong one.
- Check the language is on the watchOS list. If your language is not on Apple's watchOS 27 on-device list, that table does not show on-device dictation for it. In that case, dictate on the iPhone if its own list includes your language.
- Keep the iPhone nearby when you can. Apple says some features require an iPhone nearby 14. Apple's pages do not say that dictation needs it, but it costs little to test with the phone close by.
- Contact Apple Support if nothing works. If a restart and the settings checks do not help, Apple Support can check the watch's microphone and software.
If the watch says that dictation is disabled, the fix is in step 2. We could not find an Apple page that quotes that message, so the question on why Apple Watch says dictation is disabled explains the settings to check rather than the exact wording. For the full checklist, see why dictation is not working on Apple Watch and the iPhone dictation not working guide.
Apple's statements and third-party claims differ on watch dictation
Several points about Apple Watch dictation come from third-party sites, not from Apple. The table separates them.
| Point | What Apple's pages say | What we could only find elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Dictation is an input method on the watch | Yes, in the input button list | None needed |
| Dictation is limited by language | Yes, "not available in all languages" | None needed |
| The language follows the iPhone keyboard | Not found on an Apple page | Cult of Mac quotes Apple |
| Dictation toggle sits under General | Not found on an Apple page | iGeeksBlog |
| Dictation needs internet in every language | Not stated | Third-party claims only, and they conflict |
| Which watch models run on-device dictation | Not named | Not found |
The conflicting claims matter most for the internet question. Some sites say dictation always needs a connection, while Apple's table lists on-device dictation for a set of languages. Apple's pages are the better guide, and they do not settle every case, so test your own language and location.
Speech was faster than typing on a phone in one lab study, and no watch study was found
In one controlled study of English text on an iPhone, speech reached 153 words per minute, against 52 words per minute for the built-in keyboard, 2.93 times faster 21 22. The same study tested Mandarin Chinese: speech reached 123 words per minute, against 43 words per minute with the Pinyin keyboard 23 24. The authors say that results in non-laboratory settings still need study 25.
That study used an iPhone, short phrases and a quiet room 21. In our search we found no controlled study that compares speech and keyboard entry on a smartwatch, so the phone figures are the closest evidence, not a watch measurement. For the broader comparison, see dictation vs typing.
Where to go next on phones and tablets
Apple Watch dictation uses many of the same settings and language rules as the iPhone. The phone guides cover the parts this guide leaves out:
- How to use dictation on iPhone covers the keyboard microphone key and the iPhone's commands.
- iPhone dictation commands lists the punctuation and editing words that work on the phone.
- Dictation on iPad and Android tablets covers the same ideas on tablets.
- Offline voice typing on iPhone and Android explains which languages can run without a connection on the phone.
For the whole subject, see the overview of dictation on phones and tablets. If you need dictation on a computer rather than a watch, Yap, which we make, runs on Mac and Windows, and the download page lists the current versions.

Questions about this
- How do you change the dictation language on Apple Watch? In a text field on the watch, open the input options, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, and tap the language you want. The watch takes its dictation language from the iPhone's keyboard for each app, so a language that is missing from the watch has to be added on the iPhone first.
- Why does Apple Watch say dictation is disabled? The message means dictation is turned off on the watch, and AbilityNet says you can turn it on in the Apple Watch settings, under General and then Dictation. If the switch is already on, or the message comes back, check the iPhone's Dictation setting and any Screen Time restriction on the iPhone, then restart both devices.
- Why is dictation not working on my Apple Watch?Restart the watch and its paired iPhone first, since Apple recommends a restart when something on the watch is not working right. If that fails, check that Dictation is turned on, that your language is on Apple's list, and that the iPhone's keyboard languages match. A faulty microphone is also possible.
