Why is voice typing not working in WhatsApp?

Voice typing in WhatsApp is not a WhatsApp feature. The words come from your phone's keyboard, through its microphone key, so when it fails, check the keyboard, a permission, or a phone setting that blocks the microphone. Start by checking whether dictation works in another app, such as Notes. If it works there, the keyboard is working, so look at the microphone access WhatsApp has. If it fails everywhere, the keyboard or the phone is the cause.

On iPhone, check that Dictation is turned on

On iPhone, the microphone key only appears on the keyboard when Dictation is on. To turn it on, open Settings, tap General, then Keyboard, and turn on Enable Dictation. If a prompt appears, Apple says to tap Enable Dictation to confirm ¹. If there is no microphone key in WhatsApp's keyboard, this is the first thing to check. If the microphone key is there but does nothing, check the microphone permission for WhatsApp. Apple says that if the microphone does not work in an app, you should go to Settings, tap Microphone and make sure the app is enabled ². Apple's troubleshooting for unclear microphone sound begins with a physical check: remove any screen protector, film or case, and clear debris from the microphone openings ³.

On Android, check Gboard's microphone permission

This section covers Gboard, Google's keyboard. The microphone is the key at the top of the keyboard ⁴. Gboard can ask for recording permission, with three choices: While using app, Only this time, or Don't allow ⁵. If you chose Don't allow, Gboard cannot record your voice, and Guiding Tech says a denied permission means the app cannot detect your voice ⁶.

To fix this, open the phone's app settings for Gboard, choose the microphone permission, and select Allow only while using the app, which is the first fix Guiding Tech describes ⁷. Then return to WhatsApp and try again.

A second switch can block the microphone even when Gboard's permission is on. Guiding Tech says a device privacy setting, separate from the app permission, can limit microphone access, and that this can still show the "can't enable voice typing" message ⁸. Look for the microphone access toggle in your phone's privacy settings, and turn it on.

Gboard's own voice typing can be switched off

Gboard's voice-to-text feature has its own on or off setting. Guiding Tech says that if voice typing is disabled in Gboard, you cannot use its voice-to-text feature until you switch it on ⁹. Check the voice typing setting in Gboard's settings before you change anything else.

Language packs and a weak connection

Gboard can recognize speech on the phone without a connection. In February 2025, 9to5Google reported that Gboard for Android features offline voice typing on all devices ¹⁰. Guiding Tech says that downloading the speech recognition languages can fix voice-to-text problems where the network signal is weak ¹¹.

This matters when you dictate in a language other than your main one, or when you are somewhere with a poor signal. A language without its pack may fail even when the microphone works.

Where your words go when you use Gboard on iPhone

If you use Gboard on an iPhone rather than the built-in keyboard, the microphone path is different. Google's App Store listing for Gboard says that voice input from the Gboard microphone is sent to Google for transcription ¹². That is useful to know before you dictate something private. Built-in iPhone dictation is different: it shows in Keyboard settings whether your audio is processed on the device ¹³.

1. Test dictation in Notes. If it works there, the problem is WhatsApp's access, not the keyboard.
