Why are WhatsApp voice message transcripts not working?

When a WhatsApp voice message transcript does not appear, or comes out wrong, check four things, in order. The feature may still be off, the transcript language may not match the person speaking, your language may not be on WhatsApp's list, or the recording may be too noisy for the software to follow. Start with the first, because the transcript option does not work until the feature is on ¹.

Check that the feature is on

Transcripts are off by default, so you have to switch them on yourself ¹. Open Settings, tap Chats, then Voice message transcripts ². Turn the feature on, then try again. The Transcribe option appears when you tap and hold a voice message after the feature is on ³.

If the option is still missing after you turn the feature on, check that the message is one you received. Transcripts are made for the person who received the message, and the sender cannot see them ⁴.

A mismatched language can cause wrong transcripts

The language setting is one of the causes WhatsApp warns about. WhatsApp warned that a transcript can contain errors when the transcript language does not match the language of the message ⁵. If the sender speaks Spanish and your setting is English, the transcript can come out garbled.

To fix it, open Settings, then Chats, then Voice message transcripts, and choose the language the sender speaks ². Tap and hold the message again to get a new transcript.

Your language may not be on the list

WhatsApp did not start with every language. It said at the launch in November 2024 that transcripts would begin with a few select languages and that more would follow ⁶. The lists at launch differed by platform:

These are launch figures, and the list may be longer now. Check the language choices on the Voice message transcripts screen. If your language is not there, the transcript cannot work in that language, and no setting will change it. Ask the sender to type the key details, or check the audio yourself.

Background noise and unclear speech

Even with the right language, a noisy recording can produce a poor transcript. WhatsApp's warning lists background noise that makes words unclear as one of the main causes of errors ⁵. A voice message recorded in a car, on a train or in a crowded room is harder to transcribe than one recorded close to the phone in a quiet room.

You cannot change the sender's recording. What you can do is play the audio and listen for the words that matter, then compare them with the text. A transcript that gets the general meaning right can still get a number or a name wrong.

When the transcript is fine but you still cannot read the message

Apple's Messages on iPhone uses a different system. It shows a transcript under audio messages from iOS 17, and both people need iOS 17 ^{9 10}. A transcript that fails in WhatsApp will not be fixed by those steps, because the two apps are separate.

2. Set the language to the one the sender speaks, and tap and hold the message again.
3. If your language is not in the list, do not rely on a transcript for anything important.
4. Play the audio to confirm any number, name, time or address before you act on it.
