Dictation on phones and tablets
Voice Typing in WhatsApp and Messaging Apps
Dictating into WhatsApp uses the microphone key on your phone's keyboard, which is a different control from the microphone that records a voice message. WhatsApp can turn voice messages you receive into text once you turn on its transcripts, and Siri or Google Assistant can send a text by voice.

WhatsApp has no voice typing of its own. When you dictate into the message box, the words come from your phone's keyboard, so the control you need is the microphone key on the keyboard. The microphone button beside the message box records a voice message to send. It does not type anything. People also use "voice typing" to mean two other things: turning a voice message they received into text, which WhatsApp can do with its own transcript feature, and sending a text by voice, which Siri or Google Assistant can do. This guide covers all three on iPhone and Android, and explains the most common reasons dictation stops working.
Dictating into WhatsApp uses your keyboard's microphone
Speaking is much faster than typing on a phone. In a controlled study on an iPhone, English entered by speech reached 1, against 2 on the built-in keyboard. The study counted the finished text, including time spent correcting errors. At those rates a 1,000-word draft takes about 6.5 minutes to speak and 19.2 minutes to type, a saving of about 12.7 minutes 3.
The gap matters most for longer messages. At 153 words per minute, a 60-character message of about 12 words takes about 4.7 seconds to speak on a phone 4. Ten hours of keyboard drafting would produce the same words in about 3.4 hours of speaking, before any editing time 5.
Those numbers come from short phrases in a quiet room, and the study's authors say that results outside the laboratory still need study 6. Treat the 153 figure as a measured result under good conditions, not as the speed you will get everywhere.
The two microphones in WhatsApp do different jobs, and most confusion comes from mixing them up:
| Control | Where you find it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard microphone key | On the keyboard, once the message box is open | Types the words you speak into the message box |
| WhatsApp microphone button | Beside the message box | Records a voice message to send to the chat |
| Transcribe option | On a voice message someone sent you, after you tap and hold it | Shows a written version under that message, for you only |
Dictating on an iPhone
- Turn Dictation on once. Open Settings, tap General, then Keyboard, and turn on Enable Dictation 7.
- Open the chat in WhatsApp and tap the message box so the keyboard appears.
- Tap the microphone key on the keyboard and speak. The keyboard stays open during dictation, so you can switch between typing and speaking 8.
- Check the text before you send. Dictation stops by itself after 30 seconds without speech 9, so for a longer message start it again with the microphone key.
On iPhone, Apple says dictation is processed on the device in many languages and needs no internet connection 10. We counted 48 language and regional variants in Apple's feature table for On-Device and Modeless Dictation 11. If your language is missing from that list, check the list before you rely on on-device dictation for it.
Dictating on Android
On Android, the keyboard is usually Gboard, Google's keyboard, which Google describes in its help pages. To type with your voice:
- Tap the text field in WhatsApp.
- Tap the microphone at the top of the keyboard. When you see "Speak now", say the message 12.
- If Android prompts you for microphone access, it offers three choices: While using app, Only this time, or Don't allow 13. Choose While using app if you dictate often. Choose Don't allow and voice recording is blocked.
Gboard has been able to recognize speech on the phone since 2019, when Google moved its voice typing to an 80 MB recognizer that works offline 14. That first release was for Pixel phones in American English, so do not assume every language works offline. Samsung Galaxy phones use their own keyboard, which has a separate guide: Talk to Text on Samsung Galaxy.
WhatsApp can turn voice messages you receive into text
WhatsApp's transcript feature turns a voice message you receive into written text, which helps when you cannot play audio. It is off by default 15. To switch it on, open Settings, then Chats, then Voice message transcripts, and choose the language 16. After that, tap and hold a voice message and choose Transcribe 17.
Only you see the result. The transcript is made for the person who receives the message, and the sender cannot see it 18. WhatsApp says its transcripts are generated on your device so that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read them 19.
When a transcript is wrong, check the language first. WhatsApp's warning lists a mismatch between the transcript language and the message language as one cause of errors 20. Open Settings, then Chats, then Voice message transcripts, and pick the language the sender speaks 16. Then tap and hold the message again.
The feature does not dictate your own replies. It only transcribes voice messages other people send you, so for a reply you still use the keyboard's microphone from the previous section.
How many languages WhatsApp transcribes
At launch the language list was short, and it differed by platform. MediaNama reported that the Android version supported only a few languages, naming English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian 21. It reported that the iOS 16 and later version supported 12 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Chinese and Arabic 22. That makes the iOS list three times as long as the Android one 23.
These are November 2024 figures, and WhatsApp said it planned to add more languages 24. Check the transcript menu for the current list. WhatsApp also warned that transcripts can contain errors when the transcript language does not match the message language, when background noise makes words unclear, or when the language is not supported 20. If a transcript looks wrong, play the audio and compare before you act on it.
iPhone Messages and Google Messages transcribe audio messages too
WhatsApp was not first. In its launch coverage, Thurrott noted that voice message transcription was already a feature that Apple and Google offered in their own messaging apps 25.
On iPhone, Messages shows a transcript under audio messages automatically from iOS 17 26. The iPhone Life how-to guide describes this as automatic. Both people in the conversation need to be on iOS 17 27. The guide does not list the supported languages in the text we read, so check your own phone if your language is unusual.
On Android, Google Messages has a voice message transcription setting. Android Central's walkthrough describes where to find it under the Messages settings 28. Menu names differ between phones and software versions, so look for the transcription option rather than a fixed path. Android Central reports that Google says audio messages are not sent to the company and are processed on the device 29. Google's own Messages help page could not be read for this guide, so confirm that statement in Google's current wording before you rely on it.
| Question | iPhone Messages | Google Messages | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turned on by default | No, you turn it on in Chats settings 15 | Yes, no setting needed | Reported as a setting in Messages |
| Which devices | iOS 16 and later 22, and Android | iOS 17 and later on both phones 27 | Android phones that have the feature |
| Who can see the transcript | Only the recipient 18 | Shown under the audio message in the chat 26 | Hidden by default, and you tap the text to open it 30 |
| Where it is processed | On your device, per WhatsApp 19 | Not stated in the sources read | On the device, per Google as reported 29 |
| Languages | 12 on iOS 22 and 4 on Android 21 at launch | Not stated in the sources read | Not stated in the sources read |
The table compares what each source says. Where a cell says "not stated", the sources we read did not cover it, so check the current help page for your phone.
Siri and Google Assistant can send a text without touching the phone
Voice sending is a separate skill from dictation. You speak a command, the phone asks for the recipient and the message, and it sends the text after you confirm. On iPhone, the iMore walkthrough describes this flow: say Send Message, choose a contact, dictate, then wait for Siri to read the text back. Siri confirms the content and sends it when you say yes or send 31. That walkthrough is dated, so the prompts may differ on current versions of iOS.
On Android, the 2021 Make Tech Easier guide describes a similar flow in Google Assistant. With the command "Send a message to" and a contact name, Assistant asks you to speak the message 32. Be cautious with these steps. In March 2025, Google announced that it would replace Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones, and that Assistant would no longer be available on most mobile devices later that year 33. Check on your phone whether Assistant or Gemini does this before you rely on a voice command for a message.
Voice typing failures in messaging apps are almost always keyboard settings
If dictation works in Notes or Messages but not in WhatsApp, the keyboard is fine and the problem is permission for that app. On iPhone, Apple's guidance is that if the microphone does not work in an app, you should go to Settings, tap Microphone and make sure the app is enabled 34. On Android, the permission is the one you chose when Android asked for microphone access 13. That is why the same keyboard can work everywhere except one app.
When dictation fails in WhatsApp, the cause is usually a setting rather than the microphone. Work through these in order before you blame the app:
| What you see | Usual cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No microphone key on the iPhone keyboard | Dictation is off | Settings, General, Keyboard, then Enable Dictation 7 |
| The microphone key does nothing in WhatsApp | The app has no microphone access | On iPhone, if the microphone does not work in an app, go to Settings, tap Microphone and make sure the app is enabled 34 |
| Android shows no speech and no text | Microphone permission was set to Don't allow | Give the keyboard microphone permission again, choosing While using app 13 |
| Dictation stops in the middle | Silence for 30 seconds on iPhone | Start again with the microphone key 9 |
| Words come out wrong in another language | Language not supported, or the wrong keyboard language | Compare with the list of supported variants 11 |
Two more issues are worth knowing. Dictating into a search field can send the text to the search engine to run the search 35, so it is not the same as dictating a private message. And a WhatsApp transcript that is wrong is a transcript problem, not a dictation problem, so the fixes above do not apply to it.
If none of these help, the step-by-step guides for dictation not working on iPhone and voice typing not working on Android go through the rest of the checks, and the question on why voice typing fails in WhatsApp covers the messaging app specifically.
A dictated message is private only if the keyboard processes speech on the phone
Use this short check before you dictate anything sensitive into a messaging app:
- Keyboard settings. On iPhone, open Settings, then General, then Keyboard, and look at what your device says about where dictated audio is processed 36.
- Third-party keyboards. If you use one, check whether Allow Full Access is on, and turn it off if you do not need it 37.
- Your language. On-device dictation depends on the language, so check it against the list before you assume your speech stays on the phone 11.
- Transcripts. WhatsApp says its transcripts are made on the device and that WhatsApp cannot read them 19, but only if you have turned them on 15.
Whether your words stay on the phone depends on the keyboard and on the language, not on the messaging app. On iPhone, dictation in many languages is processed on the device 10, and your iPhone shows in Keyboard settings whether dictated audio and transcripts are processed on the device or sent to Apple's servers 36. Check that setting for your own language rather than assuming.
Third-party keyboards need a closer look. Apple's warning on third-party keyboards, as quoted by TechCrunch in 2014, says that if you enable Full Access, developers are permitted to access, collect and transmit the data you type 37. Full Access therefore lets a third-party keyboard reach the text you type, so check that setting before you use it. The guide to offline voice typing on phones covers the offline options.
WhatsApp's own transcripts are generated on the device, and WhatsApp says it cannot read them 19. Android Central reports that Google says audio messages are not sent to the company 29. Neither statement covers the keyboard's dictation, which is a separate path. For a deeper look at where voice goes, read the guide to speech to text privacy.
Which way to dictate or transcribe in a messaging app
The right tool depends on which of the three jobs you have. The table sets them out, and the chart above shows the speed gap that makes dictation worth the setup.
| Your goal | iPhone | Android | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type a WhatsApp reply by voice | Keyboard microphone key | Gboard microphone at the top of the keyboard | iPhone dictation, Android voice typing |
| Read a received WhatsApp voice message | WhatsApp transcript, from Chats settings | WhatsApp transcript, from Chats settings | This guide |
| Read an iMessage or Google Messages audio message | Automatic under the audio, iOS 17 or later 26 | Google Messages transcription setting | This guide |
| Send a text without touching the phone | Siri | Google Assistant or Gemini, depending on your phone | How to dictate and send a text hands-free |
For transcribing audio files you already have, rather than messages, see the guide to transcribing audio to text. It covers recordings that a messaging app does not transcribe for you.

Questions about this
- How do you convert WhatsApp voice messages to text?Yes. WhatsApp converts voice messages you receive into text with its voice message transcripts. Turn the feature on under Settings, then Chats, then Voice message transcripts, choose the sender's language, and tap and hold a voice message and choose Transcribe. You cannot use it to turn your own voice notes into text before you send them.
- How do you dictate and send a text message hands-free?On an iPhone, you can dictate a text with the microphone key on the keyboard and then send it yourself, or ask Siri to send it: say who it is for, dictate the words, and confirm when Siri reads them back. On Android, Google Assistant may no longer take a message by voice: 9to5Google found in September 2026 that Assistant was gone from every device it checked, so test the command on your phone first. On both routes you approve the text before it is sent.
- How do you see audio messages as text in iMessage and Google Messages? On an iPhone running iOS 17 or later, Messages shows a text transcript under an audio message automatically, with no setting to turn on, but both you and the sender need iOS 17. In Google Messages on Android, turn on Voice Message Transcription in Message settings, then tap the transcript to read it.
- How do you turn on voice typing in WhatsApp?WhatsApp has no voice typing switch of its own, so you turn voice typing on in your phone's keyboard. On iPhone, turn on Enable Dictation under Settings, General, Keyboard, then tap the microphone key on the keyboard when the message box is open. On Android, tap the microphone at the top of Gboard and allow it to use the microphone.
- Why are WhatsApp voice message transcripts not working?WhatsApp voice message transcripts can fail for four reasons: the feature is still off, the transcript language does not match the sender's language, your language is not on WhatsApp's list, or the recording has too much background noise. Check them in that order. The first two are fixed in WhatsApp's Settings, under Chats.
- Why is voice typing not working in WhatsApp?When voice typing fails in WhatsApp, check the keyboard before WhatsApp: that Dictation is on for iPhone, or that Gboard has microphone access on Android. Then check the phone's own microphone switch and the language. If dictation works in Notes but not in WhatsApp, check WhatsApp's microphone access first.
