How this dataset is built
- What counts as a row
- Prevalence of a named condition in a stated population, from government statistics, health agencies (CDC, WHO, national statistics offices) and peer-reviewed studies.
- What does not
- Advocacy figures without a cited study, and counts of people without a population base.
- How rows are found and checked
- Rows come from the facts already cited across the library, from official statistics pages, and from a structured search of epidemiology research. Each figure is stored as a fact with the exact words of its source, checked automatically against the live page.
- What the data cannot tell you
- Definitions of disability differ by survey, and a condition does not always make typing hard. The rows are context for who may benefit from voice input, not a count of dictation users.

Kept, 5 figuresCDC Disability and Health Data System (disability types in US adults)
The DHDS portal pages state no static figures, so the rows come from the CDC's own disability-types article on the same BRFSS data: any disability (1 in 4), adults 65 and older (2 in 5), vision (1 in 21) and hearing (1 in 17). Mobility is not a row because walking and stairs are not typing barriers, and cognition is not a row because the dataset has no matching condition.
Kept, 3 figuresCDC arthritis prevalence (US adults)
The CDC's MMWR report on the 2019 to 2021 National Health Interview Survey gives 21.2 percent of US adults with diagnosed arthritis, plus age-standardized shares for women (20.9 percent) and men (16.3 percent). The age-standardized all-adult share (18.7 percent) is not a row because it repeats the 21.2 percent row's population and year.
Not keptWHO World report on vision
The report's official page (8 October 2019) gives only counts: at least 2.2 billion people with a vision impairment and at least 1 billion preventable or unaddressed, with no percentage of any population. The full PDF returned HTTP 403 to both WebFetch and curl, so its tables could not be checked.
Kept, 1 figureWHO World report on hearing
WHO's 2021 news release on the World Report on Hearing states that nearly 2.5 billion people, or 1 in 4, will have some degree of hearing loss by 2050; the report's own overview page has no figure and its PDF could not be retrieved.
Not keptBritish Dyslexia Association and NHS on dyslexia prevalence
No official figure found: the BDA 2026 dyslexia factsheet and its FAQ page give no prevalence share (the 10 percent UK figure is only quoted by secondary sites), and the NHS 'Dyslexia in children' page calls dyslexia a common learning difficulty without a prevalence figure.
Not keptInternational Dyslexia Association on dyslexia prevalence
dyslexiaida.org returned HTTP 403 to every request, so its pages could not be read; search results quote only secondary sites and no IDA prevalence figure.
Kept, 4 figuresUS Census Bureau (Survey of Income and Program Participation) difficulty grasping or lifting
The Census Bureau's own 2010 SIPP report (Americans with Disabilities: 2010, P70-131) gives 7.1 percent of people 15 and older with difficulty lifting, 2.8 percent with difficulty grasping, 8.2 percent with either, and 23.8 percent of people 65 and older with either. No published 2021 SIPP percentages for the lifting and grasping items were found on the Census disability notes page.
Not keptUK Office for National Statistics or Family Resources Survey disability by impairment type
The DWP's Family Resources Survey 2023 to 2024 has impairment-type figures (Table 4.5b: dexterity 25 percent of disabled people), but only in XLSX and ODS data tables that the quote check cannot read. The release page and the older gov.uk disability pages (withdrawn in 2021) give no impairment-type percentage in readable text, and no ONS page with impairment-type figures was found.
Kept, 1 figureEurostat disability statistics (functional limitations)
Eurostat's Statistics Explained article on population with disability gives 23.9 percent of people aged 16 and over in the EU reporting some or severe activity limitation in 2024, from EU-SILC. The article and Eurostat's disability pages give no grasping, lifting or hand figure, so this is the only functional-limitation row.
The whole method, from search to calculation, is on the research data page.
