Question · Dictation
Why does dictation keep stopping?
Dictation stops by itself in one documented case: on a Mac or an iPhone, after 30 seconds with no speech. Other possible causes, such as a browser-based tool, a lost connection, or a headset that changes its audio path, are not confirmed as stop causes by the sources we read. If dictation stops within a few seconds, check the tool and the connection first, because we found no official cause for stops after one word.

Dictation keeps stopping for a few reasons the sources support, and others they do not confirm. The clearest is a timeout. On a Mac, Dictation stops automatically when it detects no speech for 30 seconds 1, and an iPhone does the same after 30 seconds without speech 2. Other stops can come from browser tools, from a lost connection, or from a headset that changes its audio path, but the sources do not confirm those as stop causes. If dictation stops within a few seconds, check the tool and the connection first. The dictation not working guide covers the wider set of causes.
A pause of 30 seconds ends Dictation on a Mac and an iPhone
This is the one stop that Apple documents with a number. A Mac stops when it detects no speech for 30 seconds 1, and it does not time out while you keep speaking. Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout 3. So the stop follows silence, not the length of what you have written.
If Dictation stops after a long pause, it is working as designed. Press the Dictation shortcut, or the Microphone key, to start it again, and continue. The question on why the dictation shortcut is not working covers the keys themselves.
A stop after a few seconds is not explained by this timeout, because 30 seconds is the documented figure. Look for one of the causes below.
Windows stops on a command or a button, and we found no timer
On Windows 11, Microsoft says you stop voice typing by saying a command such as "Stop listening", or by pressing the microphone button on the voice typing menu 4. Those are the documented stops. Microsoft's page does not describe an automatic stop after a set silence, and we did not find one in its documentation. Some third-party posts describe a short silence timer. We could not confirm that from Microsoft, so do not rely on it.
If voice typing seems to end by itself, check that nothing else in the session has changed. Click back into the text box with the cursor, then restart voice typing with the Windows key and H, as Microsoft describes 5.
Browser-based tools can end at the first pause by design
A tool built on the browser's speech recognition can stop at a pause, depending on how it is set up. The browser's developer reference says the continuous setting defaults to false, and that a false setting returns single results 6. A session that returns a single result can end when you pause, which would look like a stop after one phrase.
This is the mechanism, not a diagnosis. The MDN reference describes the interface, and it does not say which dictation products use this setting or how they set it. A tool that sets continuous to true keeps going through pauses. So if a browser tool stops at every pause, the setting is a likely cause, but the tool's own settings or support page is the place to confirm it.
Google Docs voice typing also runs in a browser 7. We did not find Google describing a stop after a pause, so treat reports of that as unconfirmed.
A lost connection stops tools that need one
Some dictation needs the internet, and when the connection drops, it stops. Microsoft says Windows voice typing needs an internet connection, a working microphone, and the cursor in a text box 8. Web-based speech recognition also works this way by default: it sends audio to a server, so it does not work offline 9.
Mac and iPhone are different. Apple says Dictation on a Mac may need an internet connection 10, while on iPhone it is processed on the device in many languages and needs no internet connection 11. Our sources do not say whether a Mac or iPhone stops when the connection drops. If the stop happens right after a drop, check the network first.
A headset that switches modes can change the audio path mid-session
A Bluetooth headset can change how it carries sound when its microphone is in use. Apple says that when Bluetooth switches to its second mode, audio quality is reduced until the microphone is no longer in use 12. We found no Apple statement that this stops Dictation. Treat it as a suspect when the stop follows a call or a headset reconnecting, and test with the built-in microphone to see whether the stops go away.
Stops after one word are a report we could not confirm
Some people describe dictation that stops after a single word. We did not find that described in Apple's or Microsoft's documentation, so we cannot give an official cause for it. The reports we found come from vendor blogs and forums. Two mechanisms could produce a fast stop: the single-result setting in browser tools, and a dropped connection. Check those two first. If you see this on a Mac or an iPhone, note the device and the app, because the 30-second timeout does not explain a stop that fast.
What to do, in order
- Count the silence. On a Mac or an iPhone, a stop after 30 seconds of quiet is the timeout. Start again and keep going.
- Check the tool. In a native app, test in a plain note. If the note keeps going and the browser tool stops, the tool is the cause.
- Check the connection for Windows voice typing, a browser tool, and any Mac or iPhone setup that needs the internet.
- Check the headset. Switch to the built-in microphone, and see whether the stops stop.
- On Windows, stop only when you mean to. Use "Stop listening" or the microphone button, and restart with the Windows key and H.
- Read the tool's own settings for any option that ends a session at a pause, especially in browser tools.
If dictation does not start at all, the question on why dictation is on but not typing covers that symptom. Some tools use a hold-to-talk control called push-to-talk, which ends when you let go, and it can look like a stop. For the device menus, the Mac guide, the Windows guide and the iPhone guide give the steps for each system.
