Question · Dictation
Why does dictation work in some apps but not others?
Dictation is documented to type anywhere you can type on a Mac, but the exceptions the sources describe include search boxes, Windows password and PIN fields, and apps such as Google Docs and Word, which run their own voice features. When it fails in one app, test a plain text field first: if dictation works there, the problem is the app or the field, not the feature.

Dictation works in some apps and not others because the field and the app decide what they accept. Apple says that with Dictation on a Mac you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it 1. So a failure in one app is a sign that the field, the app or the app's own voice tool is the difference, not the feature as a whole. Test in a plain text field first. The dictation not working guide explains the wider set of causes, and the dictation overview covers how dictation fits into each device.
Dictation follows the cursor, so the test is a plain text field
Dictation types into whatever field has the cursor. If you can type into a field by keyboard, dictation should be able to type into it too, subject to the exceptions below. That gives a simple test. Open a plain text field you know accepts typing, such as a new note or a blank document, and dictate there. If it works, the feature is fine, and the problem is the app or the field you were using. If it fails there too, go back to the question on why dictation is on but not typing, which covers the microphone and permission causes.
Search boxes and secure fields are the documented exceptions
Apple separates search boxes from general text. Its note on Keyboard settings gives composing messages and notes as examples of general text Dictation, and says dictating in a search box is not part of that example 2. That note is about where audio is processed, so it does not prove that dictation fails in a search box. It does mark search boxes as a different case, and it is a reason to test there separately.
On an iPhone, the difference is more concrete. Apple says that when you dictate in a search field, the dictated text may be sent to the search engine to process the search 3. So the search field can behave differently, because its text may go to a search service rather than only into the field.
Secure fields are the other deliberate exception. Microsoft says Fluid dictation is automatically disabled in secure fields such as passwords or PINs 4. That is a privacy rule. The fact covers Fluid dictation only, so before you conclude anything about the rest of Windows voice typing, test in an ordinary field.
Some apps run their own voice typing, which the system setting does not control
Several apps have a voice feature of their own, and it follows the app's rules rather than the system's.
Google Docs uses its own voice typing. Google says it works with the latest versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari, and that the web browser controls the speech-to-text service 5. You start it from Tools, then Voice typing, and click the microphone box that appears 6. If the microphone box does nothing, check the browser first, since Google says the browser controls the speech-to-text service.
Word on the desktop has its own Dictate feature, and Microsoft says it is available only to Microsoft 365 subscribers 7. If you do not have a Microsoft 365 subscription, the missing Dictate button is expected, and it is not a fault in your dictation setup.
Samsung phones have two built-in voice input apps, Samsung voice input and Google Voice Typing, and Samsung says its voice input works only with the Samsung Keyboard 8. If you type with a different keyboard, use the Google option instead, because the Samsung one will not run there.
Pages on Mac has its own menu path
Apple's Pages guide gives its own way to start dictation: choose Edit > Start Dictation from the Edit menu at the top of the screen 9. If the shortcut does nothing in Pages, use that menu. If the menu starts dictation, the feature works in Pages, and the fault is the shortcut, not the app. The question on why the dictation shortcut is not working covers the key itself.
Browser text fields are the case we could not settle
We did not find an Apple statement that dictation fails in Safari, Chrome or Edge text fields. The reports we found come from community forums and vendor blogs, and we did not verify them. Several describe dictation working in one browser's fields and not another's, and one describes dictated text being inserted twice in Safari. Treat these as leads, not facts.
Two checks help. First, dictate in a plain note, then in the browser field, to see whether the failure follows the browser. Second, check the microphone permission for the app you type in. On a Mac, Apple says you can decide which apps are allowed to use the microphone 10, so check that your browser is allowed to use it.
A table of where dictation is documented to work and to stop
| Where you type | What to expect | Documented by |
|---|---|---|
| Mac text fields | Dictation enters text anywhere you can type | Apple |
| Mac search boxes | Apple treats them apart from general text dictation | Apple |
| iPhone search fields | Dictated text may go to the search engine | Apple |
| Pages on Mac | Start from Edit, then Start Dictation | Apple |
| Google Docs in a browser | Its own voice typing, in supported browsers | |
| Word on the desktop | Dictate is for Microsoft 365 subscribers | Microsoft |
| Password and PIN fields on Windows | Fluid dictation is switched off | Microsoft |
| Galaxy phones | Samsung voice input works only with the Samsung Keyboard | Samsung |
What to do, in order
- Test a plain text field, such as a new note. If dictation works there, the problem is the app or field.
- Check whether the field is a search box or a secure field. If it is, use the keyboard for secure fields, and test an ordinary field for everything else.
- Use the app's own voice tool when it has one, such as Tools, then Voice typing, in Google Docs, or Dictate in Word if your subscription includes it.
- In Pages, start from Edit > Start Dictation to confirm the feature runs there.
- In a browser, try a second browser and check the microphone permission for the app.
If dictation works in a field and then stops, the question on why dictation keeps stopping covers that. For the device steps, the Mac guide, the Windows guide and the iPhone guide give the menus for each system, and the guide to voice typing in apps and browsers lists the apps that run their own voice features.
