For most people, the best dictation app for a Mac is the one already installed. Apple Dictation costs nothing, and Apple says you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type 1. It is good enough for short messages and notes. Pay for a dedicated app when one of four things matters to you: cleanup of rough speech, words Apple misses, transcription of recordings, or a way to keep audio on your Mac. This guide sorts the Mac options into four groups, gives five tests to run before you pay, and links to our detailed guides on each part.
Yap, which we make, is one of the on-device apps in the second group. We describe the other options with the same care, and we recommend Apple's free tool wherever it is enough.
Start with Apple Dictation: it is free and good enough for short text
Apple Dictation is the right first choice for short messages, emails and notes, because it is already on your Mac. You can start it three ways: press the Microphone key if your keyboard has one, press your Dictation shortcut, or choose Edit > Start Dictation 2. Our step-by-step guide to using Dictation on Mac covers the setup, including the Keyboard settings you need to turn it on.
Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout 3. That means a long draft is possible, but it also means you will read back a lot of text for errors, so the accuracy question below matters more the longer you dictate.
Accuracy is the main reason to look further. In a 2025 test by 9to5Mac, Apple's speech API had a word error rate of 10.3 percent on one 7-minute-31-second episode 4. Whisper Large V3 Turbo, run on the same episode, had a word error rate of 1.5 percent 5. A word error rate is the share of words that are wrong, added or missing, so 10 percent means roughly one word in ten needs fixing. A gap that size is one reason to test before you assume the built-in tool is enough.
Read that chart as one data point. The article's author says the exact numbers would differ under slightly different methods 6. It is a single episode, so it tells you how the engines ranked on that recording, not what you will get on yours. The fourth section shows how to get your own number.

Mac dictation apps fall into four groups: built-in, on-device, cloud AI and file transcription
Most Mac dictation tools fit one of four groups. The groups describe how the app processes your speech, which matters more than the brand.
| Group | Examples | Where your speech is processed | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in | Apple Dictation | On the Mac for supported languages, with some features needing internet | Free |
| On-device apps | HEX, Handy, VoiceInk, Superwhisper's free plan | On your Mac, with models you download | Free, or a one-time purchase |
| Cloud AI apps | Wispr Flow, Superwhisper Pro, Aqua Voice | Sent to the company's servers by default | Subscription, with a free tier |
| File transcription | MacWhisper, Buzz | On the Mac, for recordings you import | Free, or a one-time purchase |
The groups overlap. Superwhisper's free plan runs local Whisper models, but its Pro plan adds cloud models and AI processing 7. Price and processing depend on the plan you pick, so check both.
Apple's tool is the only one in the first group, and it comes with the Mac. Every other app has to be installed and given microphone access before it can hear you, and some also ask you to download a speech model.
On-device apps keep audio on the Mac; cloud apps send it away in exchange for AI rewriting
The main difference between the groups is where the audio goes. An on-device app transcribes your speech with a model on your Mac. A cloud app sends the audio to a server, which can run larger models and more processing. Neither choice is free of trade-offs.
Apple says that general text Dictation on a Mac is processed on your device and not sent to Siri servers 8. The same help page says Dictation on a Mac may need an internet connection 9, so "built in" and "always offline" are not the same thing. Check the setting on your own Mac rather than assuming.
On-device apps use the same kinds of models you can run yourself. HEX describes itself as local-first, and its README says that ordinary dictation does not need OpenCode or a cloud transcription service 10. It also says that if you turn on post-processing with OpenCode, the app sends the transcript, the foreground application and the Brave website hostname to the model provider you configure 11. That is an explicit opt-in, and it is the kind of detail to read before you assume an app is private. Yap also processes dictation on the device, on Mac and Windows, and you can read more on our download page.
MacWhisper says it can process sensitive content locally, "without data ever leaving your Mac" 12. Superwhisper's free plan uses local Whisper models without AI processing, and the company says nothing dictated leaves the device 13.
Cloud apps work differently. Wispr Flow's privacy page describes a dictation that is sent to its servers over an encrypted connection, TLS 1.2 or later 14. The company says it deletes your audio as soon as it has been transcribed, unless you turn on its Dictation cloud storage setting 15. Those are two different promises: the audio leaves your Mac, and the company says it does not keep it unless you turn on cloud storage. Read the privacy page for the plan you use, and check which settings let the company use your audio to improve its models.
Apple's own privacy controls, including the Improve Siri & Dictation setting, are covered in our guide to Apple Dictation privacy. For a broader view of what happens to voice data, read Is voice to text safe?.
Test five things before paying: accuracy on your own words, delay, where it types, privacy and price
Run these five tests on your own Mac, with your own writing, before you buy anything. Keep the microphone and the room the same for every app. Otherwise the comparison measures your setup instead of the software, and that is the most common reason people reach different conclusions from the same test.
-
Accuracy on your own words. Read 300 words of something you actually write, such as a work email or a draft, into each app. Count the errors by hand or with a text diff, and compare. The published numbers come from one episode and one run 6, so they are a guide, not a verdict. We also did not find a controlled head-to-head test of Apple Dictation and Wispr Flow on a Mac in the sources we checked. Many of the Mac rankings we found were written by the vendors they rank, so we did not rely on them. Read Is Apple Dictation as good as Wispr Flow? for what the evidence does and does not show.
-
Delay. Measure the time from the moment you stop speaking to the moment the text appears. In the 2025 test, Apple's speech API took 9 seconds to transcribe the episode 16, and Whisper Large V3 Turbo took 40 seconds 17. That was file transcription on one Mac, so time your own live dictation as well.
-
Where it types. Apple describes general text Dictation as composing messages and notes, and it says dictating in a search box is not part of that example 18. Test each app in the programs you use every day, such as Mail, Notes, Word, Google Docs in a browser, or your company's chat tool. An app that works in one place may fail in another.
-
Privacy. Find out where your audio goes before you dictate anything sensitive. For Apple, check the Keyboard setting described in the privacy guide. For any other app, read its privacy page for three things: whether audio is sent to servers, how long it is kept, and whether it is used for training. The Wispr Flow and HEX facts above show the kinds of answers to expect.
-
Price. Calculate the cost over a year, not just the first month. Wispr Flow's free plan allows 2,000 dictated words per week on desktop 19, and its Pro plan is listed at $15 per user per month 20. Superwhisper's Pro plan is listed at $8.49 per month 21 or $249.99 once for a lifetime license 22. VoiceInk's Solo license costs $25 once, for one Mac 23. MacWhisper's Pro license is listed at 64 euros, paid once, with lifetime updates 24. Prices change, so check the vendor's page before you buy. For Yap, see the pricing page.

Nuance said Dragon for the Mac would stop getting updates in 2018
Some people still look for Dragon on a Mac. Nuance said it would stop providing updates for Dragon Professional Individual for Mac after 22 October 2018 25.
Under that notice, a Dragon license you already own for the Mac would not receive new Mac updates. If you need a Mac product now, choose from the groups above. Our Dragon for Mac page explains what the old Mac product did and what to use instead, and our guide on Dragon NaturallySpeaking covers the wider product history.
Open-source Mac apps run Whisper or Parakeet models for free
Several free, open-source Mac apps run speech models that you download once. They trade a one-time setup for no subscription, and the setup takes more effort than installing a paid app.
Handy describes itself as a free, open-source speech-to-text application that works completely offline 26. Check its releases page for the current version before you install it.
HEX is local-first voice dictation for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 15 or newer 27. Its setup asks you to download a local speech model 10, which takes time on a slow connection.
Whisper is OpenAI's speech recognition model, and the open-source Mac apps above run versions of it on the machine itself. whisper.cpp, a common engine for running Whisper on a Mac, calls Apple silicon a first-class target, optimized through ARM NEON, the Accelerate framework and Metal 28. Speed and memory depend on the model size you choose, so compare the model names your app offers. Our guide to running Whisper locally explains the trade-offs.
Parakeet is a newer family of speech models. In the 2025 test, the Parakeet v2 model had a word error rate of 12.3 percent 29, the highest of the three engines on that episode, as the chart above shows. Model versions differ and newer releases may score differently, so compare the version your app uses.
Open-source does not mean effortless. Expect a model download, some settings to check, and fewer polished features than the paid cloud apps. Read each project's README for the current setup steps before you start, because those steps change between releases, and check the model download finished before you judge the app's accuracy. For a direct answer on running Whisper for dictation, read the question on Whisper on a Mac.
The right app depends on what you write: a table by use case
Start from the job, then choose the group. This table is a starting point, not a verdict. Before you decide, make a short list of the words that matter to you, such as product names, client names and technical terms. Apps call the feature by different names, such as vocabulary or dictionary, so search each app's settings for it and test those words in your trial.
| What you dictate | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Short messages, notes and search | Apple Dictation | Free, built in, and it covers most short text |
| Long drafts you will edit anyway | Apple Dictation, then a dedicated app if accuracy matters | Apple does not time out long dictation 3, but errors in long text take time to fix |
| Polished writing from rough, spoken drafts | A cloud AI app, such as Wispr Flow or Superwhisper Pro | The cleanup you pay for comes from servers, so audio leaves your Mac |
| Keeping audio on the Mac | HEX, Handy, Superwhisper's free plan or VoiceInk | Processing stays on the device, with the trade-offs above |
| Transcribing recordings and interviews | MacWhisper | Imports recordings and processes them on the Mac |
| Medical or clinical notes | See the question on medical dictation software for Mac | Clinical use depends on your organization's rules for patient data, so check them first |
For the wider field, our best dictation software guide compares apps across Windows, phones and the web. If you dictate in more than one language, our guide to Mac dictation languages shows which ones Apple supports. Apple lists 63 language and regional variants for Dictation on the Mac 30, so check whether your language is on that list before you buy an app for it.
To see how each macOS version changed the feature, read Mac Dictation by macOS version. If Dictation does not start at all, the troubleshooting guide has the checks to run first.
Apple Dictation is the default, and it is the right answer for many people. Pay for an app when your own test shows a gap that matters to you, and keep the free tool for everything else.

Questions about this
- Does Dragon NaturallySpeaking work on a Mac?No. Nuance stopped updating Dragon Professional Individual for Mac in 2018, and we found no current Dragon product for macOS. Dragon's current desktop version is for Windows, so on a Mac, start with Apple's built-in Dictation or a Mac dictation app, and test it on your own writing.
- How do you transcribe a meeting on a Mac?Use Live Captions on an Apple silicon Mac to read the meeting as it happens, or record the meeting and transcribe the file afterward with Voice Memos or a Whisper-based app. Before you record anyone, check the consent rules where each participant is, because they differ by state and country.
- How do you transcribe an audio file on a Mac?Open the recording in the Voice Memos app if your Mac, macOS version and region support transcription, then copy the text you need. If Voice Memos is not available to you, import the file into an app that runs a speech model on your Mac, such as Buzz or MacWhisper, and check the transcript against the audio.
- How do you use Whisper for dictation on a Mac?Most people should use a Mac app that runs a Whisper model for them, such as Handy or the free plan of Superwhisper for live dictation, and Buzz for recordings. To run Whisper yourself, build the open source whisper.cpp project, download a model file, convert your audio to 16-bit WAV and run its whisper-cli tool. The command-line tool transcribes files, so it does not type into other apps.
- Is Apple Dictation as good as Wispr Flow?We found no independent test that ranks Apple Dictation and Wispr Flow on a Mac. Apple Dictation is free, built in and adds basic punctuation, while Wispr Flow says it does more cleanup but sends your audio to servers and caps its free plan each week. Test both on the same writing before you decide.
- Is Apple Dictation better than Whisper on a Mac?Not in every case. In the one published Mac test we found, a large Whisper model was far more accurate than Apple's speech engine but took about four times as long. Apple's engine is free, fast and already on your Mac, so start there, and test a Whisper app on your own writing before you switch.
- Is there a free dictation app for Mac?Yes. Apple Dictation is built into macOS, so you do not need to buy anything to use it, and it is enough for many people's short messages and notes. Free third-party apps add offline speech models and recording transcription, but some free plans cap how much you can dictate, such as Wispr Flow, so check the limit before you depend on one.
- What are the best open-source dictation apps for Mac?The open-source Mac dictation apps worth testing are Handy and HEX, which are both MIT-licensed and suited to live dictation, plus VoiceInk, which is GPL-3.0 open source but sold as a paid Mac app, and Buzz, which is best for transcribing files. Before you install, check which HEX you have, because the original Swift app called Hex was archived in October 2026.
- What is the best medical dictation software for Mac?We could not confirm a single best medical dictation app for Mac. Check three things before you choose: whether the product runs on a Mac at all, whether the vendor will sign a business associate agreement if it handles patient audio, and whether the audio is processed on your Mac or sent to servers. Accuracy in the one clinical pilot we found was close between Dragon Medical One and a Whisper-based system.
- What is the best offline speech to text for Mac?For most people, the best offline option is Apple Dictation with its on-device processing turned on, as long as your language is on Apple's on-device list. For recordings, or for a language that list does not cover, use an on-device app that runs a Whisper model, and check that its cloud options are off.
