Question · Dictation on Mac
Does the MacBook Neo get advanced dictation?
No. The MacBook Neo can run macOS 27 and its standard Dictation, but Apple's advanced Dictation model needs an M3 or later chip and at least 12GB of unified memory. The Neo has an A18 Pro chip and 8GB, so it misses both conditions.

No. The MacBook Neo does not get the advanced Dictation model that Apple introduced in macOS 27. The Neo has 8GB of unified memory 1, and Apple's advanced model needs at least 12GB 2. The Neo also uses an A18 Pro chip, not the M3 or later chip that the same Apple footnote requires 3. It misses both conditions.
The Neo still runs macOS 27 and the standard Dictation that comes with it. If dictation does not start on your Neo, the cause is usually a setting, not the model. Our guide to why Mac dictation is not working walks through those checks.
The Neo misses the advanced model on both memory and chip
Apple's footnote for the advanced model names two conditions. The model is available on Mac models with M3 and later and at least 12GB of unified memory 2. The Neo fails the memory test by 4 GB, since it has 8GB 4. Apple's spec page identifies the Neo's chip as the Apple A18 Pro 3, so it also fails the M3 test.
Passing one condition is not enough. A Mac with 16GB and an M1 chip does not get the model either, because the chip is too early. Only a Mac that meets both conditions gets the model. The rule is in our guide to Mac dictation by macOS version, which also shows which other Macs fall outside it.
The Neo does get the standard on-device Dictation in macOS 27
The Neo is on Apple's macOS 27 compatibility list, which contains only the MacBook Neo and Macs with Apple silicon 5. Being on that list means the Neo runs macOS 27. It does not give the Neo the advanced model. Apple's footnote calls the advanced model an improvement in accuracy 2, so the standard Dictation is what you use on the Neo.
Apple's Mac Help says that for general text, such as messages and notes, Dictation is processed on your device and is not sent to Siri servers, and you can check this in Keyboard settings 6. On the Neo, you check that setting in System Settings, under Keyboard. Our question on whether Mac dictation adds punctuation explains what the standard model inserts on its own.
The advanced model is also limited to English
Even on a Mac that qualifies, the advanced model is English only at launch. Apple lists it for 9 English variants 7, which include English (United States), English (United Kingdom) and English (Australia). If your Mac uses another language, the advanced model would not apply to it anyway. Check your language in our guide to Mac dictation languages before you compare models.
What to do on a MacBook Neo
Use the standard Dictation. Turn it on in System Settings, then Keyboard, under Dictation, and click Enable 8. Then press the microphone key, or the shortcut you set, in any text field and speak. The standard model handles ordinary writing.
If the advanced model matters for your work, the choice is a different Mac, not a setting. A Mac with an M3 or later chip and at least 12GB gets it. Our macOS 27 dictation guide covers the release in more detail. If you want more accuracy on the Neo, a dedicated app that runs its own speech model may be an option. Our overview of Mac dictation apps compares the built-in and third-party choices by feature.
For voice commands rather than dictation, the Neo uses Voice Control, which is a separate feature from Dictation. Our guide to Voice Control on Mac explains the difference. For the terms, see Apple Intelligence and Apple silicon.
To check your own Mac, open Apple menu, then About This Mac. The chip and memory are listed there. If the chip is an M3 or later and the memory is 12GB or more, your Mac qualifies for the advanced model, provided your language is one of the 9 English variants. Otherwise it keeps the standard Dictation.
