The version to buy today is Dragon Professional 16 for Windows. It is the current desktop release of Dragon NaturallySpeaking, which Nuance makes. Nuance's US store menu lists the Legal and Law Enforcement editions and the cloud Anywhere products, but not Home or Premium 1. The consumer Home edition is no longer sold 2, and Premium 13 was withdrawn in 2018 3. A one-user Professional 16 license was listed at $685.99 by a US reseller when we checked on October 16, 2026 4. The cloud subscription is a separate purchase, and one reseller lists it at $660 per year 5.
This guide covers the version history, the editions and what became of each one, the difference between a license and a subscription, and how to check a listing before you pay. The 2026 prices here are reseller listings from one day, not Nuance's list prices, so confirm them before you buy. The older prices are the launch prices of their releases. For the basics of the product, see our overview of Dragon NaturallySpeaking. For the category as a whole, see what dictation software is.
Dragon Professional 16 for Windows is the current desktop version
Version 16 is the newest desktop release. Nuance's release notes list Windows 11 (64-bit) and Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit) as supported, along with Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 6. Check your operating system against that list before you buy, because a license does not help on an unsupported system.
Dragon needs at least 4 GB of memory 7 and 12 GB of free disk space, which includes the downloaded installation files 8. The full requirements, including the processor, are in our guide to Dragon's system requirements.
Nuance's store says Dragon Professional v16 lets employees dictate documents 3 times faster than typing, with up to 99% recognition accuracy 9. That is the company's own claim. The page does not say how it was measured, or on what audio and vocabulary. Treat it as a marketing figure. For what independent studies show about speech compared with typing, see speaking vs typing speed.
Nuance announced that it would stop providing updates for Dragon Professional Individual for Mac after 22 October 2018 10. If you work on a Mac, compare the options in our guide to the best dictation apps for Mac and read about Dragon for Mac.
Dragon has had many major versions since 1997, and the newest dates from 2023
Dragon's first general-purpose, large-vocabulary continuous product was unveiled in April 1997 11. Nuance has since released versions up to 16, and the newest of them, version 16, has a stable release date of February 28, 2023 12. The table lists each version from 11 onward for which we could confirm a date, with the editions or detail its source names.
| Version | Released | Editions or detail named in the source |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | August 2010 13 | Home, Premium, Professional, Legal |
| 12 | Download from August 3, 2012 14 | Pre-order from $99.99 15 |
| 13 | August 2014 16 | Home, Premium, Professional, Legal |
| 14 | September 2015 17 | Professional, individual and Group |
| 15 | August 16, 2016 18 | Professional Individual |
| 16 | February 28, 2023 12 | Professional for Windows 10 and 11 6 |
The table starts at version 11 because the sources we could open for the earlier releases were news reports rather than Nuance pages. The dates for versions 11, 13, 14 and 15 come from the version table of the encyclopedia article on Dragon, which we used only where its entries agree with each other. The version 12 date comes from Nuance's own launch release. Nuance's release notes for version 16 give no launch date, so the February 2023 date rests on the encyclopedia alone 12.
Where a release has a Nuance announcement, we used it, because it is the vendor's own statement. Where it does not, we used the encyclopedia. When two sources give different numbers for the same thing, as with the version 15 accuracy claims below, we report both rather than choose one. The years agree across the sources we checked, but several exact months rest on one secondary source.
The version 16 list price is higher than the 2016 download price
Price is the clearest way to see how far Dragon's cost has moved. The chart shows the price points we could verify, each for one license.
Dragon Professional Individual version 15 was offered for download at $300 from September 1, 2016 19. The one-user version 16 license listed at $685.99 costs about 2.29 times as much 20. The two products are different releases in different years, and the 2016 price is not adjusted for inflation, so the comparison shows list prices only and nothing about what the software is worth to you.
Nuance gave two accuracy figures for version 15
Nuance's own sheet for version 15 says accuracy improved by up to 15% out of the box, without training 21. The launch press release for the same release claimed upwards of 24% greater accuracy 22. The sources do not say which measure the press release used, so the gap cannot be resolved from the text. Neither figure is an independent test. If accuracy matters to your work, test the current version on your own speech, as described in how to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
Version 16 mainly added Windows 11, Office 2021 and Windows Server 2022 support
The release notes list Windows 11 support, Office 2021 support and Windows Server 2022 support, along with MouseGrid on up to three monitors 23. Those are the headline changes for the software's environment. The notes do not state a change in recognition accuracy, so they do not show that version 16 is more accurate than version 15. 23
For the changes that matter most in day-to-day use, the question on what changed between Dragon 15 and 16 goes through them one at a time. If you are weighing an upgrade on the basis of accuracy, the release notes will not settle it, and a test on your own speech will tell you more.
Home, Premium, Professional and Legal were editions of one product line
Through the 2010s, Nuance sold Dragon in consumer and professional editions. The 2010 and 2014 releases list Home, Premium, Professional and Legal together 13 16. Home was the consumer line 2.
Nuance withdrew Dragon Premium 13 from the market effective September 1, 2018 3. A New Zealand reseller says Dragon Home is no longer available for sale 2, and that Nuance and Microsoft did not create a Dragon Home version 16 24. We could not open a Nuance page that announces the end of Home sales, so the reseller notice is the source for that point.
The table shows where each name stands on October 16, 2026.
| Edition | Status on October 16, 2026 | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Professional 16 (Windows) | Sold as a license | Reseller listing 4 |
| Dragon Legal and Dragon Law Enforcement | In Nuance's US store menu | 1 |
| Professional Anywhere and Legal Anywhere | In the store menu; Professional Anywhere is priced as a subscription | 1 5 |
| Dragon Home (consumer) | No longer sold | 2 |
| Dragon Home 16 | Not released | 24 |
| Premium 13 | Withdrawn September 1, 2018 | 3 |
| Professional Individual for Mac | Updates ended after 22 October 2018 | 10 |
The version 14 release names Individual and Group forms of Professional 17. The version 16 listing on CDW is for one user 4, and it does not say which of those two forms it is. Medical editions are not in the store menu above, so this guide does not price them. For the clinical product, see the glossary entry for Dragon Medical One. For how dictation is used in those fields, see legal dictation software and medical dictation.
Compare the same edition and license count from each seller
The edition name is the first thing to check. Home is the consumer line that is no longer sold, and Professional is the desktop product this guide prices. A cheaper listing for a different edition, or for a different number of users, is not a like-for-like price. Compare the same product, the same license count and the same currency from each seller before you decide.
Legal and Law Enforcement are separate purchases, and profiles do not move automatically
If you are considering the Law Enforcement edition, note the upgrade rule. Nuance says that if you upgrade from Dragon Professional or Dragon Legal to Dragon Law Enforcement version 16, your user profiles are not updated automatically 25. You must export your custom words and commands before the move and import them afterwards 25. Those word lists are part of your custom vocabulary.
A desktop Dragon is a license, and the cloud version is a subscription
Nuance's notice on Premium 13 says that customers who bought it "own a perpetual license to the solution and may continue using it" 26. That is the older model. The version 16 reseller listing is for a one-user license and reads "license - 1 user" 4. For what the term means, see perpetual license.
The cloud version, Dragon Professional Anywhere, is sold as a subscription on a one-year term. StartStop lists it at $660 per year 5. Milner lists it at $480 per year on the same term 27. The chart compares one year of the license with each annual price.
At StartStop's annual price, the one-user license costs about the same as one year of the subscription 28. At Milner's annual price, the subscription costs less than the license for the first year 27 4. The two annual prices differ ( 5 against 27), so the reseller you choose changes the answer. Both are list prices on a web page, not quotes, so check the current figure with the reseller before you decide. For a wider comparison of cloud and desktop options, read the question on whether Dragon has a subscription.
How to choose between a license and a subscription
Start by deciding how many years you expect to use Dragon. A license is one payment for the version you buy, while a subscription keeps charging you each year you stay on it. If you expect to use Dragon for more than a year, add the subscription years together and compare that total with the license. A subscription can make sense for a short project, and a license can make sense for steady daily use.
Then ask each seller what the price includes. Check whether the quote covers the number of users you need, whether it includes updates for its whole term, and whether the cloud product has the features you use. A price that looks lower can cover less, so compare what each option gives you, not only the sticker figure.
Buy from Nuance or an authorized reseller and check the version before you pay
Use this checklist before you pay for any Dragon listing.
- Check the product name and number. Look for Dragon Professional and version 16. A listing for Home or Premium is for a discontinued product 2 3, whatever its price.
- Check the operating system line. Version 16 supports Windows 11 and Windows 10 6. Confirm that your PC meets the memory and disk figures above before you buy.
- Check the license count. The version 16 listing reads "license - 1 user" 4. A listing for a different count is a different purchase.
- Check which upgrade route applies to your version. Dragon upgrades versions 13, 14 and 15 to version 16 automatically 29. Version 12 or earlier needs a manual procedure 30: export your custom words and commands, uninstall the old version, install version 16, then import the words into a new profile.
- Confirm the price on the day you buy. Prices vary by reseller and language 4. The figures in this guide are a snapshot from October 16, 2026.
Before you commit to a purchase, and where the seller offers a trial, test the product on your own material. Dictate a page you have already written, count the corrections you make, and time the editing afterwards. That gives you a figure for your own work that no vendor page can supply.
If you are not sure you need the full product, start with what your computer already has. Built-in dictation covers many everyday uses, and the free dictation software guide explains what the free options can and cannot do. Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows, and it is a different product from Dragon. The comparison of dictation software by need shows which tool fits which job.
Older versions lost support, and the upgrade path depends on the version
Owners of Premium 13 kept their license, but Nuance stopped providing support or updates for it after January 1, 2019 26. That is the only end-of-support date for an edition that we could verify.
Versions 13 to 15 upgrade to version 16 automatically 29. Version 12 and earlier need the manual steps in the checklist above 30.
Upgrade prices existed in the past too. At its 2016 launch, Nuance offered Dragon Professional Individual v15 for $150 to users upgrading from version 14 and from Dragon Professional versions 12 and higher 31. We could not find a current upgrade price for version 16. Ask the reseller whether your existing license qualifies before you buy a full license. Our guide to how to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking covers setup and commands once the new version is installed.

Questions about this
- Can you upgrade an old Dragon NaturallySpeaking to version 15 or 16?Yes, if your copy is version 14 or 15: Nuance says these upgrade to version 16.1 automatically, without an uninstall. Version 13 and earlier take a manual route, and we could not find a Nuance page that confirms a route from version 12 to version 15.
- How do you find your Dragon NaturallySpeaking license key or serial number? In a running copy of Dragon 16, open the Help icon and select About Dragon, where the serial number appears on the screen. If you bought a download, Nuance's confirmation email contains the serial number in both its CSV and HTML attachments.
- How much does Dragon NaturallySpeaking cost?A one-user license for Dragon Professional, the Windows desktop product, was listed at $685.99 by a US reseller on October 16, 2026. The cloud version, Dragon Professional Anywhere, is a subscription listed at $480 to $660 per year, depending on the seller. Nuance's Windows product page shows no price, so confirm the figure with a seller before you buy.
- Is Dragon NaturallySpeaking free? No, Dragon is a paid product, and Nuance's US store lists no free edition. Version 16.1 can run in a trial mode for five launches before you must activate it. Windows voice typing and Mac Dictation come with the operating system, but Windows voice typing needs an internet connection.
- Is there a Dragon NaturallySpeaking education discount?Nuance's education discounts are for schools, colleges and universities that buy through volume programs, not for individual students at a published price. Students can get the discount through their school or university, if it licenses Dragon and gives it to them after they prove their status. If you are a student, ask your school's IT service before you pay the full price.
- Is there a free trial of Dragon NaturallySpeaking?Yes, in a limited form. If you skip activation the first time you start Dragon 16, Nuance says you can launch it in Trial mode five times before you must activate. Nuance's notes count launches rather than days, and we could not confirm a day-based trial on a Nuance page.
- Is there a subscription or cloud version of Dragon?Yes, but only for the cloud product, Dragon Professional Anywhere, which is sold as an annual or monthly subscription. The desktop program, Dragon Professional 16 for Windows, is sold as a license for one user, and the store and reseller we checked do not sell it on a subscription.
- What are the system requirements for Dragon NaturallySpeaking?Dragon Professional 16 runs on Windows 10 or Windows 11, and Nuance lists Windows 11 only in its 64-bit form. It needs at least 4 GB of memory, a 2.2 GHz dual-core processor, 12 GB of free disk space and .NET Framework 4.8, plus an audio input capable of 16-bit recording.
- What changed between Dragon 15 and Dragon 16?Version 16 added Windows 11, Office 2021 and Windows Server 2022 support, along with MouseGrid on up to three monitors. Nuance's release notes do not claim a change in recognition accuracy, and the accuracy claims for version 15 are not a like-for-like comparison. Version 16.1 has since added LibreOffice 64-bit support.
- What is the difference between Dragon Home and Dragon Professional?Dragon Home was the consumer edition, and it is no longer sold. Dragon Professional is the desktop edition that resellers still sell, and Nuance describes its licensing and management tools for organizations. The sources we could open do not compare the two feature by feature, so do not buy a Home listing as a current product.
- Where can you still buy Dragon NaturallySpeaking? You can still buy a desktop Dragon Professional 16 license from resellers such as CDW, which listed a one-user license at $685.99 when we checked on October 16, 2026. Nuance's Windows page shows no price. Dragon Home is no longer sold, and we could not confirm listings at Amazon, Best Buy or Officeworks.
