Question · Dictation on Mac
Does Dragon NaturallySpeaking work on a Mac?
No. Nuance stopped updating Dragon Professional Individual for Mac in 2018, and we found no current Dragon product for macOS. Dragon's current desktop version is for Windows, so on a Mac, start with Apple's built-in Dictation or a Mac dictation app, and test it on your own writing.

No. We found no Dragon version for Mac that you can buy today. Nuance, the company that made Dragon, stopped providing updates for Dragon Professional Individual for Mac after 22 October 2018 1. We searched for a later Dragon release for macOS and found none. The Dragon product page for Dragon Professional version 16 describes the software as optimized for Windows 11 and backwards-compatible with Windows 10 2.
If you searched for Dragon because someone recommended it for Mac, that advice is probably about an older release. The rest of this page explains what the 2018 change means, what it means for a license you already own, and what to use on a Mac instead.
Nuance ended the Mac line in 2018 and did not bring it back
Nuance said in October 2018 that it had decided to discontinue the Dragon Professional Individual line for Mac 3. The company said customers could still get telephone support for up to 90 days from activation in North America 4. That window closed long ago, so you should not expect help from Nuance on the Mac version.
The change ended updates for the Mac line. A license you bought before the change does not receive new Mac updates. Whether an old Dragon for Mac still runs on your version of macOS is a separate question, and we did not test it. If you have an old copy, try it on your own Mac before you rely on it for work.
Dragon's current desktop version is a Windows product
The Dragon product page for version 16 describes Windows 11 support and backwards compatibility with Windows 10 2. A reseller listed a one-user Dragon Professional version 16 license at $685.99 on the day we checked 5. That price is for the Windows product, so it does not buy you a Mac version.
Nuance's mobile app, Dragon Anywhere, is a different product. A July 2026 forum thread on MacPowerUsers reported that new subscriptions to Dragon Anywhere in the iOS app could not be bought 6. That is one user's report, not an official notice, so check the current App Store listing before you plan around it, and remember that it is a phone app, not a dictation tool for your Mac.
Running the Windows version in a virtual machine is a workaround, not a Mac app
Some people run Windows on a Mac with virtualization software and install Dragon inside it. We did not verify whether Nuance supports that setup, and we did not find a Nuance statement on it. Before you buy a Windows license for this purpose, ask Nuance directly about virtualization. Also weigh the cost of a Windows license and the time to set up a virtual machine against a Mac app that works in a few minutes.
What to use on a Mac instead
Start with the free tool, then choose a paid app only if a test shows a gap that matters to you.

How to choose quickly
Dictate 300 words of something you really write, such as a work email, into each app, and count the errors. Use the same microphone and room for every test.
