Question · Dictation
Why is the dictation shortcut not working?
A dictation shortcut that does nothing means either the key you press is not the key Dictation is set to use, or the feature is not running. On a Mac, check the shortcut in Keyboard settings, and test the feature with Edit > Start Dictation. On Windows, Win+H needs an internet connection, a working microphone and the cursor in a text box.

A dictation shortcut that does nothing means one of two things: the key you press is not the key the feature is set to use, or the feature itself is not running. You can tell them apart quickly. On a Mac, read the shortcut in Keyboard settings, then start Dictation from the Edit menu. If the menu works and the key does not, the key is the fault. If neither works, the feature is the fault. The dictation not working guide covers the five causes of failure, and the dictation overview explains the feature behind the key.
Check which key the Dictation shortcut is set to
A Mac lets you choose the key that starts Dictation. Apple says you can customize the key combination that starts and stops Dictation 1. If you changed it, the key you remember may no longer be the one that works. The shortcut you actually have is the one shown in Keyboard settings under Dictation, and the key you press has to match it.
Apple's own menu offers a Press Fn Key Twice option. Apple says that if you choose it, the matching Keyboard settings option changes to Start Dictation (Press Fn Twice) automatically 2. The two settings move together, so change the shortcut in Dictation settings rather than in a separate place, and then test the key you see there.
Some keyboards have a Microphone key, and some do not. On a keyboard without the key, use the Dictation shortcut or the Edit menu 3.
Be careful with the Microphone key itself. Apple says pressing and releasing it starts Dictation, but pressing and holding it activates Siri, if Siri is enabled 4. A held key that opens Siri looks like a dictation shortcut that does the wrong thing. Press it briefly.
A shortcut that seems dead may be stopping a session that is already running
A key can appear to do nothing when it is actually ending a session you started earlier. On a Mac, you stop Dictation with the Escape key, the Microphone key, or the Dictation shortcut 5. If you started Dictation, went to another task, and came back to press the shortcut, you may have stopped it rather than started it. Look at the screen to see whether Dictation is still running before you press again.
Test Edit > Start Dictation to separate the key from the feature
Apple gives three ways to start Dictation on a Mac: the Microphone key (on keyboards that have one), the Dictation keyboard shortcut, or Edit > Start Dictation 3. The third does not depend on the key at all, so it is the best test.
If Edit > Start Dictation starts the feature, the feature works, and the fault is the key or its setting. Go back to the shortcut settings and choose a key you can press reliably. If the menu item is missing, or it starts nothing, the fault is in the feature, and the question on why dictation is on but not typing covers the microphone and permission causes.
Voice Control can take over the key's job
On a Mac, Voice Control can replace Dictation. When Voice Control is on, you dictate through it, and standard macOS Dictation is not available 6. A shortcut that does nothing on a Mac with Voice Control switched on is not running standard Dictation, because standard Dictation is not available then. Turn Voice Control off in System Settings if you want the Dictation shortcut back.
On Windows, Win+H depends on three conditions
On Windows 11, you turn on voice typing by pressing the Windows key and H together on a hardware keyboard, or the Microphone button on the touch keyboard 7. If that does nothing, check the three conditions below before you blame the shortcut. Microsoft says voice typing needs an internet connection, a working microphone, and the cursor in a text box 8.
That gives a short checklist. Click into a text box and make sure the cursor is blinking there. Confirm the connection is working, since the speech recognition runs online. Then confirm the microphone is working. If all three pass and Win+H still does nothing, the microphone permission is the next place to look, in the question on the dictation setting that is on but silent.
It depends on the keyboard and any key tools you run
One case is not settled by the sources we read. A key-remapping tool or a keyboard utility can capture a key before the operating system sees it, which would stop the shortcut from reaching Dictation. Apple's pages on Dictation do not mention this, so treat it as a check to make, not a confirmed cause. Turn the tool off for a test and see whether the shortcut returns.
If the shortcut is the fault, change it in Keyboard settings to a key you can press reliably, then test in a text field. The Mac guide lists the full set of Mac checks, and the Mac fix page gives the menu steps.
What to do, in order
- Read the shortcut in Keyboard settings under Dictation on your Mac. On Windows, note whether you use the hardware keyboard or the touch keyboard.
- Press that key briefly in a text field, with the cursor blinking. Do not hold the Microphone key.
- Choose Edit > Start Dictation. If it starts, the feature works, so change the shortcut to one you can press.
- Turn off Voice Control if it is on, then test again.
- On Windows, check the cursor, the connection and the microphone, in that order.
- Stop any session you started earlier with Escape before you press the shortcut again.
If the shortcut works but dictation then stops within seconds, the question on why dictation keeps stopping covers that symptom. For a full walkthrough of how to start the feature on each device, see the guide to turning on voice typing, and the glossary entry for voice typing defines the term used on Windows.
