Question · Dictation
Why is dictation not working in CarPlay or my car?
Dictation in CarPlay or a car can fail for one of three reasons: Siri is off on the iPhone, Screen Time restrictions stop CarPlay from detecting the phone, or the car's own voice system is faulty. Restart the iPhone and the car, make sure Siri is on, and check Screen Time. If a Toyota's voice system freezes, ask a dealer whether a software update listed for your model applies.

Voice input in a car can fail in two different places: in the phone that CarPlay runs on, or in the car's own voice system. Apple's CarPlay help page names the phone-side causes, which are Siri being off and Screen Time restrictions. The car's voice system can fail separately, and Toyota's service bulletins show one such fault. Check the phone first, because it is the part you can change in a few minutes.
Restart both devices and make sure Siri is on
Apple's CarPlay troubleshooting steps start with a restart. The page says to restart your iPhone and your car, then to make sure that Siri is on 1. A restart is the first step Apple gives, and the page asks you to check Siri in the same breath.
If you turned Siri off, turn it on in the iPhone's settings and then reconnect to CarPlay. The steps are short, so do them before anything else.
Check that Screen Time is not blocking CarPlay
If the car does not detect your iPhone, Apple says to check for restrictions. The page says that if your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted 2. On the iPhone, the path is Settings, Screen Time, Content & Privacy Restrictions, then Allowed Apps, where CarPlay should be turned on 3.
Apple's steps are about the connection, so a restriction shows up as a car that does not detect the phone. This is also the check to make if a family member or an employer set up the phone, because they may have set the limit.
If the phone is connected but dictation still fails, disconnect and reconnect CarPlay, then test again.
Separate the phone from the car
Once CarPlay connects, the voice input can come from two sources: Siri and dictation on the phone, or the car's voice commands. These are different features, and a fault in one does not mean the other is broken. Test the phone on its own: dictate a short message in a text box on the iPhone, away from the car. If that works, the problem is in the connection or the car. If it fails, the problem is in the phone settings, and the guide to dictation that is not working covers the microphone, permission and language checks that apply there.
We did not find an Apple page that describes dictating a message by voice through CarPlay step by step. The steps above are the ones Apple's CarPlay help page supports, so for any other step, check your car's manual or your car maker's support site.
Toyota's bulletins show that a car's voice system can freeze
Some Toyota problems sit in the car, not the phone. Toyota's service bulletin for the Entune head unit lists faults in the car's voice command system. One of them is that the voice command system freezes when voice command is used immediately after ignition is ON, on Entune Premium Audio units in 2014 model year Corolla and RAV4 vehicles 4. The bulletin covers a set of software versions and model years, so it may not match your car.
If you have a Toyota and the voice system freezes, note the model year and the software version on the head unit, then ask a Toyota dealer whether a software update is listed for your car. The bulletin covers a software update for the head unit, so the dealer can check your software version against it.
Some cars use a microphone you cannot choose
In many cars, the microphone is built into the dashboard or the mirror, and you cannot pick a different one. A microphone hidden by a bag, a cable or a loose cover can make the car miss your voice, and that looks like a dictation fault. Check that nothing covers the microphone, and speak toward the car's controls rather than away from them. Background road and fan noise also reduces accuracy, which is why the background noise guide matters even in a parked car.
What to do, in order
- Restart the iPhone and the car, then make sure Siri is on.
- Check Settings, Screen Time, Content & Privacy Restrictions, Allowed Apps for CarPlay.
- Disconnect and reconnect CarPlay, then test again.
- Test dictation on the iPhone without the car. If that fails, fix the phone first.
- If the car's voice system freezes, record its model year and software version, and ask a dealer for an update.
The question on dictation with AirPods covers headset microphones that are not the one in use, and the Apple TV question covers another device where region and language decide whether dictation works. For Notes, Messages and Pages on the iPhone or Mac, see the question on apps. The dictation overview lists the rest of the series.
