Question · Dictation on Mac
Can you type while dictating on a Mac?
Yes, on a Mac with Apple silicon. Apple says you can keep using the keyboard while Dictation listens, and the cursor stops pulsing while you type and resumes when you stop. Apple's pages describe this only for Apple silicon Macs, so check your own machine before you rely on it.

Yes, on a Mac with Apple silicon, you can type while Dictation is listening. You do not have to stop dictating to fix a word or add a symbol. Apple says that on a Mac with Apple silicon, you can still use the keyboard while you speak, and there is no need to stop Dictation 1.
Apple's macOS Tahoe 26 guide describes the same behavior for Apple silicon Macs 2. The steps for starting Dictation are in the how to use Dictation on a Mac guide, and this page covers only the typing question.
On Apple silicon the keyboard and your voice work together
Dictation types whatever you say at the insertion point. When you type, your keystrokes go to the same place. Apple's description is that the cursor stops pulsing while you type, then resumes when you stop, so you can carry on dictating 1.
You can use the cursor as a status light. Dictation is ready when the cursor is highlighted and pulsing, or when you hear the tone that signals the Mac is ready for dictation 3. If the cursor has gone still because you are typing, that is the expected pause, and it starts again when you stop.
Use the keyboard for fixes, symbols and corrections
Typing is most useful for small jobs that speech handles badly. A common case is a name or code that Dictation spells oddly. Type the fix, then go back to speaking. Another case is a symbol. Apple says that when you dictate text on a Mac, you can use commands to enter punctuation, capital letters and symbols, including symbols for math and currency 4. Say the command if you prefer speech, or type the symbol if it is quicker.
Dictation also marks what it is unsure about. Mac Dictation underlines ambiguous text in blue, so you can click the underlined word and choose an alternative 5. Use that before you retype the word. Read the whole passage before you send it, since typing and speech can both leave errors behind.
It depends on the chip in your Mac and the macOS version
The answer is yes only for Macs with Apple silicon, as Apple's pages describe them. Apple's macOS 27 compatibility list contains only the MacBook Neo and Macs with Apple silicon 6. Intel Macs stop at macOS Tahoe 26, the last version they can run, so they cannot get the macOS 27 dictation model 7.
Apple's pages do not describe typing during Dictation for Intel Macs. That does not prove it fails, but it means you should test it rather than assume it. Open a blank note, start Dictation, speak a few words, type a word, and watch whether the cursor stops and then resumes pulsing.
If you use an iPhone, the behavior is described differently. Apple says the keyboard stays open during Dictation on iPhone, so you can switch between touch and voice 8. That is a separate feature from the Mac one.
What to do
Check that your Mac has Apple silicon in About This Mac before you rely on typing during dictation. Then start Dictation with the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut, speak a sentence, type one correction, and continue speaking. If the cursor does not resume, stop Dictation with Escape, and start again. For the setting that starts and stops Dictation, see how to turn off Dictation on a Mac, and for the wider subject, see the Mac dictation guide or what Dictation on a Mac is.
The chip matters because Apple describes this behavior only for Apple silicon Macs. Language and microphone settings affect whether your speech comes out right, so check them too.
