Question · Dictation on Mac
Can Mac dictation understand two languages at once?
Apple documents switching between languages you have added, not understanding two languages in one sentence. Set up both languages, then switch with the Globe key or the language label next to the cursor before each part you dictate.

Apple's Dictation on a Mac can use more than one language, but it switches between them. You add each language, then change the active one while you dictate. Apple's guide does not say that Dictation can recognize two languages within the same sentence, so do not rely on it for that. The practical rule is to dictate each part in the language you have active, and to test your own mixed sentences before you depend on them.
Apple documents switching between languages, not mixing them
Apple's Mac Help says you can "set up Dictation for multiple languages and switch between them as needed" 1. The phrase that matters is "switch between them." Apple describes changing the active language, and the steps it gives are for changing that language, not for combining two of them.
The switching controls are simple. You can click the language next to the cursor, or press the Globe key if your keyboard has one, and then choose the language you want 2. Both controls change the language for what you say next. Neither describes a sentence in which two languages are both recognized.
So the honest answer depends on the sentence. If you finish one language, switch, and then start the next, Apple's documented method covers that. If you want one sentence to contain both languages, Apple's pages do not confirm that it will work.
How to set up two languages
Each language has to be added on its own. Go to Dictation in Keyboard settings, click Edit next to Languages, and select each language and region you use 3. Choose the region as well as the language, because the same language can appear under several regions. The main list has 63 language and regional variants on macOS 27 4, so check your exact entry rather than the language name alone.
Keep the list short. Deselect any language you do not use, so the switch control shows only the languages you need.
Test your own mixed sentences
Since Apple's pages do not settle the mixed case, test it on the Mac you will use. Use the sentences you actually write.
- Add both languages, following the steps above.
- Dictate one sentence that contains a word from your second language, and read the output.
- Dictate one sentence in your first language, switch with the Globe key or the language label, then dictate a sentence in your second language.
- Compare the two results. If the mixed sentence is wrong and the switched sentences are right, dictate in parts and switch between them.
Record which kinds of sentence worked, because a result on one test sentence does not prove the rest.
Voice Control covers fewer languages
If you also use Voice Control, check its own list before you assume the same languages are there. Voice Control lists 20 language and regional variants on the Mac 5, far fewer than Dictation. Voice Control is a separate feature, so a language you can dictate in may not be available for commands.
When the answer depends on your languages
Whether switching is enough depends on which languages you speak and how you mix them. A language that Apple's Dictation does not offer cannot be added, so you cannot switch to it. If one of your languages is missing, the question is settled before it starts. To check which languages and variants Apple lists, and which of them also run on the Mac itself, see Apple dictation languages on a Mac.
If the wrong language appears even when you have switched, check the active language and region. See why Mac dictation types in the wrong language. For Mandarin and Cantonese specifically, see how to dictate in Chinese on a Mac.
What to do
- Add each language you speak, and choose the right region for each.
- Dictate in one language at a time, switching between them with the Globe key or the language label next to the cursor.
- Test any sentence that mixes languages before you rely on it, and keep the mixed parts short if the test fails.
- For writing where a mistake matters, read the output before you use it, whatever the language.
