Question · Dictation on Mac
Does dictation work on an Intel Mac?
Yes. Dictation works on Intel Macs, including the MacBook Pro and the 2019 Mac Pro, through macOS Tahoe 26, which is the last macOS for Intel in Apple's compatibility lists. Apple says Dictation on an Intel-based Mac sends your speech to Apple to process, and it ties some features to Apple silicon.

Yes. Dictation works on an Intel Mac, and it can be used the same way as on newer Macs: press the microphone key, or your shortcut, in a text field and speak. The limit is the operating system. Apple's compatibility lists show that macOS Tahoe 26 still runs on some Intel Macs, and that macOS 27 lists only Apple silicon Macs 1. So an Intel Mac stops at Tahoe 26 and cannot get the macOS 27 advanced Dictation model.
Two things differ on Intel. Apple's Sonoma guide says that when you dictate on an Intel-based Mac, your utterances are sent to Apple to process your requests 2. And some features that Apple's guides describe are tied to Apple silicon, such as typing while you dictate 3.
Intel MacBook Pro and Mac Pro models can run Tahoe 26
Apple's Tahoe compatibility list includes the 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2019 and the 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2020 with four Thunderbolt 3 ports 4. Those two are the Intel MacBook Pro models named on that list. The list also includes the Mac Pro from 2019, next to the Mac Pro from 2023 5.
The Mac Pro split is clear. Apple's list of Mac computers with Apple silicon starts the Mac Pro in 2023 6. So the 2019 Mac Pro is an Intel model, and the 2023 Mac Pro is an Apple silicon model. If you own a 2019 Mac Pro, Tahoe is the last macOS version you can install.
Check your model before you assume anything. A 2020 MacBook Pro comes in two forms. The 13-inch model with four Thunderbolt 3 ports is an Intel model, and the M1 model is Apple silicon. Use Apple menu, then About This Mac, and read the Chip line. An Intel Mac shows a processor name, while an Apple silicon Mac shows an M-series chip.
What Apple says about dictation on Intel
Apple's guides do not give a separate setup for Intel. On macOS 27 the steps are the same as on other Macs: open System Settings, click Keyboard in the sidebar, go to Dictation and turn it on 7. The difference is where your speech goes. Apple's Sonoma 14 guide says Dictation on an Intel-based Mac sends your utterances to Apple 2. The same guide says the sentence also covers a language without on-device dictation.
Apple's current Tahoe page does not repeat the Intel rule. Treat the Sonoma statement as the one written for Intel Macs, and check the on-device message in Keyboard settings on your own Mac before you dictate confidential text.
Features tied to Apple silicon do not apply on Intel
Several features in Apple's guides name Apple silicon. Typing during dictation is one of them. Apple's Sonoma guide says that on a Mac with Apple silicon, you can type while dictating, and you do not have to stop Dictation first 3. Apple's Ventura guide says that on a Mac with Apple silicon, you can insert emoji by voice while dictating 8.
These are conditions Apple attaches to the feature. Apple's text does not say these features work on Intel, so treat them as unconfirmed there. Our answer on typing while dictating on a Mac covers the Apple silicon case in detail.
What to do on an Intel Mac
If Apple's Dictation is enough, keep it. Sending speech to Apple is the trade-off, and you can read Apple's own privacy note in our guide to Apple dictation privacy. Use Dictation for drafts, messages and notes, and check the text before you send it. If something fails, our guide to why Mac dictation is not working starts with the settings.
If you need dictation that runs on the Mac itself, the built-in option does not do that on Intel in Apple's description. Look for a dedicated app that runs its own speech model. Our guide to offline dictation on Mac explains what to check. For the wider history of these releases, see our guide to Mac dictation by macOS version, and for the Apple silicon term, see Apple silicon.
