Question · Dictation on Mac
Can you use dictation on a Mac mini?
Yes. Dictation is part of macOS, so it runs on a Mac mini, but Apple's Mac mini specifications list no built-in microphone. Connect a microphone, such as AirPods or a USB or headset microphone, select it in Sound settings, and Dictation can hear you.

Yes, you can use Dictation on a Mac mini. Dictation comes with macOS, so the Mac mini runs it like any other Mac. The catch is the microphone. Apple's specifications for the Mac mini list a built-in speaker and a 3.5 mm headphone jack under Audio, and no built-in microphone 1. A Mac with no internal microphone needs an external one connected and selected before Dictation will work 2.
So the short answer is that Dictation works once a microphone is connected and chosen. Until then, pressing the Microphone key or your shortcut will not type what you say. The steps are in the how to use Dictation on a Mac guide.
Connect a microphone before you turn Dictation on
Apple's specification page lists the Mac mini's audio hardware, and it covers the current models. When we read it on 16 October 2026, the Audio section listed playback formats, the built-in speaker and the headphone jack, with no microphone. Apple changes the page as models change, so check it for the exact model you own. Plan for an external microphone. The table shows the common choices.
| Option | How to use it on a Mac mini | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods | Pair them, then let the Mac use them for input | Apple's Automatically Switch AirPods option lets either AirPods act as the microphone 3 |
| USB microphone | Plug it into a USB port, or use a USB-C adapter | Select it in Sound settings before you test |
| Headset microphone | Connect it to the headphone jack or a USB port | A simple choice that keeps the microphone near your mouth. The microphone guide explains how to pick one |
Whatever you choose, select it. Apple tells Mac users to select the microphone in Sound settings and raise its input volume 4. Then open the Dictation section of Keyboard settings. The Microphone source menu decides which device Dictation listens to. On Automatic, your Mac listens to the device it thinks you are most likely to use. To use a particular microphone, choose it from the menu 5.
Start Dictation with the keyboard you have
A Mac mini has no keyboard of its own, so you bring one. On a keyboard that has a Microphone key, press and release it to start Dictation. On any keyboard you can use the Dictation shortcut, or choose Edit > Start Dictation in an app that has an Edit menu 6. Test in a blank note first. Say a sentence with a comma and a question, and check that the words appear where the cursor is.
If nothing appears, check the microphone source and the input volume before you change anything else.
Voice Control needs a working microphone too
Voice Control is the Mac's hands-free feature for controlling the computer, and it also dictates text. Apple's page on turning Voice Control on or off says that when Voice Control is ready, its menu bar icon changes to indicate that Voice Control is listening for commands 7. A Mac that cannot hear you cannot use either feature, so the same microphone setup applies to both. For the choice between them, see dictation vs Voice Control vs Siri on a Mac, and for setup, see Voice Control on Mac.
It depends: the model and the macOS version
The answer above covers Mac minis that run current macOS releases, and older models can differ. An Intel Mac mini stops at macOS Tahoe 26, the last macOS version for Intel Macs, so it cannot get the macOS 27 dictation model 8. Check the chip and macOS version in About This Mac before you buy a microphone for a specific use.
Mac minis that run Apple silicon also have the option to keep typing while dictating, which the question on typing while dictating on a Mac covers in detail.
What to do next
Connect a microphone you trust, select it under Sound settings, set the Microphone source in Keyboard settings, and test in a blank note. If you need more than typing, such as opening apps and clicking buttons by voice, turn on Voice Control next. For the basics of the feature itself, read what Dictation on a Mac is, and for the whole subject, see the Mac dictation overview.
