Question · Dictation on Mac
Can Siri take dictation on a Mac?
No, Siri is not the Mac feature for typing what you say into a document. Apple describes Dictation for entering text anywhere you can type, while Siri's writing help drafts and refines text in a Siri conversation.

No. Siri is not the feature that types your spoken words into a document. On a Mac, that job belongs to Dictation. Apple describes Dictation as the way to speak to enter text anywhere you can type it 1. Siri does something different. It answers questions and carries out requests 2, and its writing help produces drafts and refinements inside a Siri conversation 3.
The difference matters when you want words in a document. A Siri draft is text you read in the Siri window and then move or copy yourself. Dictation puts the words where your insertion point is. If you tried to dictate into Siri and got a written draft back, that is the expected result for a writing request, not a fault.
You can check the difference in a minute. Open Notes, click where you want the text to go, and start Dictation with the Microphone key or the shortcut. Speak one sentence, and the words appear at the cursor. Then ask Siri the same sentence as a question. The answer appears in the Siri window, and nothing is typed into Notes. Both features respond to your voice, but only Dictation writes into the document you are in.
How to start Dictation instead
Dictation starts in one of three ways. Press the Microphone key if your keyboard has one, press the Dictation keyboard shortcut, or choose Edit > Start Dictation 4. Its switch is in Keyboard settings: go to Dictation and turn it on 5. Make sure that switch is on before you test anything, so you do not mistake a switched-off Dictation for a broken one.
Speak in a normal voice at a steady pace, and use the Microphone key again whenever the session stops. For punctuation and layout commands, see Mac Dictation commands and punctuation.
What Siri's writing help does
Apple's writing features for Siri cover drafting, proofreading and rewriting, and summarizing text 3. You can ask follow-up questions and refine the result in the same conversation, which is useful when you want a first draft to edit. It is less useful when you want your own words to appear exactly as you said them.
Apple labels Siri AI as beta on macOS 27 6, so these features may change before a final release.
When Siri is the right tool
Use Siri for a quick answer, a conversion, or a change to a setting. Apple's own examples include calculations and conversions, such as "What's 18 percent of 225?" 7. Before you rely on it, check the requirements in the most useful Siri commands on a Mac.
The short answer for each job
- To type a message, note or document by speaking, use Dictation.
- To draft, proofread or summarize text with Apple's writing help, use Siri, then copy the result into your document.
- To click, scroll and navigate the Mac by voice, turn on Voice Control, which includes its own dictation.
Standard Dictation and Voice Control cannot run at the same time 8, so choose the mode for the task in front of you.
