Question · Dictation on Mac
Can you dictate on an iPhone and send the text to a Mac?
Not directly, but you can move the text with Universal Clipboard. Dictate on the iPhone, copy the text, then paste it on the Mac. Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account and within 10 meters of each other.

Dictation on an iPhone puts your words into the app you are using on the phone. It does not stream them to a Mac. Apple's iPhone guide to dictation describes text going into the field you are typing in, and it does not describe a setting that sends dictated text to another device. The built-in way to get the words onto the Mac is copy and paste, using a feature Apple calls Universal Clipboard. Once you dictate, you copy the text on the iPhone and paste it on the Mac. The steps are in the guide to how to use Dictation on a Mac.
Universal Clipboard is the built-in way to move dictated text to a Mac
Apple describes Universal Clipboard as a way to copy content from one of your Apple devices and paste it on another 1. Apple's two examples run in different directions. One copies a URL on a Mac and pastes it into Safari on an iPhone 2. The other copies text on an iPad and pastes it into a note on a Mac 3. Apple does not show an iPhone-to-Mac example, but its general description covers that direction. Because the example is missing, test the direction with your own devices before you depend on it.
To move a dictated paragraph, use these steps:
- On the iPhone, select the dictated text. Apple's guide says you can double-tap a word or triple-tap a paragraph, then move the grab points to adjust the selection.
- Tap Copy.
- On the Mac, click where the text should go, then press Command-V or choose Edit > Paste.
Apple describes the same copy-and-paste steps for both devices in its Universal Clipboard guide.
Four conditions decide whether the clipboard works between an iPhone and a Mac
Universal Clipboard depends on the setup of both devices, and it does not work if one condition is missing. The table lists what Apple requires and where the fact is cited.
| Condition | What Apple says | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Same account | Both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account | 4 |
| Distance | Devices are within 30 feet (10 meters) of one another | 5 |
| Radios and Handoff | Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff are turned on, on both devices | 6 |
| Time | Copied content stays on the Clipboard for a short time | 7 |
If the paste does not appear, check these four points before anything else. Apple's troubleshooting also says to restart both devices and try again if the feature still does not work 8.
Long dictation needs a different route than the clipboard
Universal Clipboard suits small amounts of content. Apple says it is best for sharing small selections of text or copied images between devices 9. For several files, Apple points to a separate sync feature, named "Sync content between your Mac and iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch" on the same page. That feature is the right tool for files, not for a single dictated draft.
For longer work, dictate in chunks and paste each chunk on the Mac as you go. Dictation on iPhone also stops on its own when the phone hears no speech. Apple's guide says it stops after 30 seconds without speech 10, so a long pause can end a session before you have finished. Pasting in chunks keeps each copy short and makes the stop less of a problem.
Some people send dictated text to themselves in a message or keep it in a note app that syncs through iCloud. We did not test either route for this guide, so check it on your own devices before you rely on it.
It depends on the devices, the language and the Mac you use
The answer changes with your setup, so check these three points:
- Language. Check that your language is supported by Dictation on the iPhone before you dictate in it. Support differs by language, and it is not the same thing as Dictation on the Mac.
- System requirements. Apple says both devices must meet the minimum system requirements for Universal Clipboard 11. An older iPhone or Mac may not meet them, so check before you rely on the feature.
- The Mac itself. If you only need the words on the Mac, you can dictate on the Mac instead. The steps for that are in how to use Dictation on a Mac, and you can check how typing during Dictation works on Apple silicon Macs in can you type while dictating on a Mac.
What to do to send dictated text from an iPhone to a Mac
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices, and turn on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff on both.
- Keep the iPhone and the Mac within 30 feet (10 meters) of each other while you copy and paste 5.
- Dictate a short test sentence on the iPhone, copy it, and paste it on the Mac. This tells you whether the route works before you rely on it.
- For a longer draft, dictate in chunks and paste each one as you finish it, so each copy is used before the clipboard expires 7.
- Read the pasted text on the Mac before you send or save it, because dictated text can contain mistakes.
If you want to know what counts as dictation in the first place, the dictation glossary entry gives the short definition. For how Siri and Dictation differ on the Mac, see can Siri take dictation on a Mac. For the iPhone side of the feature, see what is dictation on an iPhone.
