Question · Dictation software
What are the system requirements for Dragon NaturallySpeaking?
Dragon Professional 16 runs on Windows 10 or Windows 11, and Nuance lists Windows 11 only in its 64-bit form. It needs at least 4 GB of memory, a 2.2 GHz dual-core processor, 12 GB of free disk space and .NET Framework 4.8, plus an audio input capable of 16-bit recording.

The requirements for the desktop version, Dragon Professional 16 for Windows, are short and set a low floor. Nuance publishes one list for each release. The checks that catch people out are the Windows version, the 32-bit or 64-bit setting and the microphone, more than the memory or processor.
For the product's versions and prices, see our guide to Dragon NaturallySpeaking versions. For the wider category, see dictation software.
Dragon Professional 16 runs on Windows 10 and 11, and Windows 11 must be 64-bit
Nuance's list of supported systems names Windows 11 (64-bit), Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit), and Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 1. Two things follow from that line. Windows 11 is supported only in its 64-bit form. Windows 10 works in either form. Nuance's list does not name Windows 8 or Windows 7, so treat those as unsupported.
Windows reports whether a PC runs a 32-bit or a 64-bit system in its system information. Check that before you buy, because a license does not help on a system the software does not support.
Memory, processor and disk set a low minimum
Nuance gives 4 GB of RAM as the minimum for every supported operating system 2. The minimum processor is a 2.2 GHz Intel dual-core or equivalent AMD processor, and Nuance says faster processors give faster performance 3. The program needs 12 GB of free hard disk space, and that figure includes the installation files it downloads 4. Check the free space before you start the download, not after.
The installer also needs Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 or later, which you must download from Microsoft if it is not installed 5.
The microphone has its own requirement, and AirPods are not supported
The audio input is the one requirement you choose yourself, and the software does not supply it. Nuance's Dragon 16.1 release notes, the newest point release we found, say that dictation needs an audio input device capable of 16-bit recording 6.
The same notes say that Apple AirPods are not officially supported for dictation with Dragon 7. The release notes also list a known issue. If you select AirPods on the Choose a Microphone screen, dictation and commands stop working. Nuance's workaround is to choose a different microphone. For what to buy, read the question on the best microphone for Dragon and how close the microphone should be.
The cloud version has its own runtime list
Dragon Professional Anywhere, the subscription product, does not use the same list. Its 2026.1 release notes name the runtimes it needs: .NET 4.8, .NET 8.x (x86), ASP.NET Core 8.x (x86) and Microsoft WebView2 8. If you are weighing the subscription, check that list as well as the desktop one. The question on whether Dragon has a subscription explains how the two products differ.
It depends on the job, the room and the microphone
Meeting the minimum tells you the software will start, not how well it will recognize your speech. Recognition quality depends on your voice, the dictation microphone and the room, and none of those appear in the requirement list. Nuance says a faster processor gives faster performance, which is a different question from accuracy.
- An older laptop that just meets the figures. It will run the program. Its built-in microphone is a separate decision, and it is worth testing that before you rely on the laptop for long sessions.
- A PC used in an office or on a server. Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 are on the list, so check with the administrator which version is installed.
- A Mac. Dragon Professional 16 is a Windows program. If you use a Mac, read Dragon for Mac and compare the options in our guide to the software for Mac.
If you are not sure whether your Windows version counts as supported, check the list first and whether Dragon works with Windows 11 for the version-specific details.
How to check your PC before you buy
- Confirm the Windows version and its bit setting. Windows 11 must be 64-bit. Windows 10 can be 32-bit or 64-bit 1.
- Check the memory. You need at least 4 GB of RAM 2.
- Check the processor. It should be at least a 2.2 GHz dual-core Intel or equivalent AMD processor 3.
- Check the free disk space. You need 12 GB free, including the installation download 4.
- Check .NET Framework 4.8. Download it from Microsoft if it is not installed 5.
- Check the microphone. It must be capable of 16-bit recording 6, and AirPods are not officially supported 7.
- Check the release. The figures above come from the version 16 and 16.1 notes. If a seller offers a different edition or release, look up its notes before you pay.
Requirements tell you what the software needs to run. They do not tell you how accurate it will be for your voice, so test it on your own material before you commit. The guide to how to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking covers setup once the program is installed.
