Question · Dictation software
Is there a free trial of Dragon NaturallySpeaking?
Yes, in a limited form. If you skip activation the first time you start Dragon 16, Nuance says you can launch it in Trial mode five times before you must activate. Nuance's notes count launches rather than days, and we could not confirm a day-based trial on a Nuance page.

Yes, but the trial is limited by launches, not by days. Nuance's version 16 notes say that if you skip activation the first time you start Dragon, you can launch it in Trial mode five times before you must activate 1. The version 16.1 notes give the same rule 2. After the fifth launch you need to activate to keep using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, which Nuance makes.
That is enough for a real test, but not for a long project. Five launches can go quickly if you open the program only to check one document. This page explains what the trial includes, what we could not confirm, and how to test the product before you pay. For the price and the versions, see our guide to Dragon versions, editions and price.
Dragon 16 lets you skip activation for five launches
The trial is part of the activation step. The version 16 notes say you are prompted to activate the product the first time you start Dragon. If you skip activation, you can launch it in Trial mode five times 1. The notes also say the instructions assume the computer has an internet connection, so run the first start while you are online 3.
Find your serial number before you start, so you are not searching for it when the launches run out. The installer asks for the number during setup 4, and the license key page shows where to look.
Dragon 16.1 has the same five-launch rule
The newer version 16.1 notes say the first start prompts you to activate the product, and that if you skip activation you can launch Dragon in Trial mode five times 2. The notes describe activation for version 16.1, so other editions and older versions may differ. Check the release notes for your own version before you rely on the five-launch count.
The 16.1 notes also say dictation needs an audio input device capable of 16-bit recording 5. Test your microphone during the trial, not after you have paid.
What we could not confirm
Some third-party pages say Nuance offers a trial of seven to 30 days, depending on the version. We could not find that figure on a Nuance page, so do not plan around it. The trial page that older guides point to now redirects to a Microsoft health page when we check it, so an old link may not lead to a current trial.
We also could not confirm which features the trial includes. Nuance's notes count launches and do not list them. If a feature matters to you, such as the web extension or a particular voice command, test it in the first launch.
How to test the trial in five launches
Plan the five launches before you install.
- Decide at the first start whether to skip activation. Skipping it is what starts the five-launch count, so do not skip it until you are ready to test.
- Use the first launch to test your microphone. Dictate a page you have already written, and count the corrections you make.
- Use the second and third launches for your own tasks. Dictate into the program you use most, such as your email or word processor.
- Test commands and custom words on the fourth launch. Add the terms you use often, and check whether the commands work.
- Save your results before the fifth launch. Record the error count and the time you spent editing, so you can compare the trial with another product.
If you want to test other tools first, the free dictation software guide explains what the free options do and do not do. For the paid choice, see where to buy Dragon NaturallySpeaking and how much Dragon costs.
What the trial does not tell you
The trial shows how the software works on your computer and voice. It does not show long-term accuracy, because five launches is a short period, and it does not show how the subscription version behaves, since that is a separate product. For cloud and subscription questions, read whether Dragon has a subscription.
Vendor accuracy figures are not a test on your speech. Nuance's own claims for version 16 are marketing figures, so test the product on your own material before you decide 6.
