Question · Dictation software
Is Dragon NaturallySpeaking free?
No, Dragon is a paid product, and Nuance's US store lists no free edition. Version 16.1 can run in a trial mode for five launches before you must activate it. Windows voice typing and Mac Dictation come with the operating system, but Windows voice typing needs an internet connection.

Dragon is not free. Nuance's US store lists Dragon Legal, Dragon Law Enforcement, Dragon Professional Anywhere and Dragon Legal Anywhere, and none of them is a free edition 1. The desktop license for one user was listed at $685.99 by CDW when we checked on October 16, 2026 2. The one trial mechanism we could confirm is the trial mode in version 16.1, which lets you launch the software five times without activating it 3.
If you need dictation for light use, Windows and Mac already include a built-in option. The sections below say what each one needs, and free open-source tools exist for people who will set them up.
The trial in version 16.1 counts launches, not days
Dragon 16.1 asks you to activate the product on first start. If you skip activation, you can launch it in Trial mode five times. After the fifth launch you must activate it to keep using the product 3. This is a count of launches, not a period of time, so how long the trial lasts depends on how often you open the program.
We could not confirm a timed trial on Nuance's own site. Nuance's trial page returned a "high demand" error page to our requests, and the pages that describe trials of a set length are unofficial. We do not state a trial length here, because we could not check one against Nuance.
Built-in dictation needs no Dragon license, but Windows voice typing needs a connection
Both major desktop systems include dictation, and neither needs a Dragon license.
On Windows, voice typing needs an internet connection, a working microphone and the cursor in a text box 4. Because of that connection requirement, it is not an offline tool. For the details, read whether Windows voice typing works offline.
On a Mac, Apple says that general text Dictation is processed on your device and not sent to Siri servers, and that you can check this in Keyboard settings 5. That is a privacy setting, not a price difference. Dragon is a separate product, and its price buys Dragon itself, not the operating system's built-in dictation.
Free open-source tools exist for those who will set them up
Handy describes itself as a free, open source speech-to-text application that works completely offline 6. The project lists it as working on Windows, macOS and Linux 7. These tools cost nothing to download, but you set them up yourself, and their accuracy depends on the model you choose. We have not tested them here. Our guide to free dictation software compares the free options, and the free alternative to Dragon covers the same question from the Dragon side.
When paying for Dragon makes sense
Dragon has features that some free tools may not offer. Nuance says its Read That feature differs from playback, because Dragon does not record and save your dictation when it reads text aloud 8. If you need features like that, or the cloud and management options in the Professional line, plan for the cost of a license or a subscription. How much Dragon NaturallySpeaking costs sets out the options and their prices. If you do not need those features, the free options above may do the job.
What to do
- Try the built-in tool first. Use voice typing on Windows or Dictation on a Mac for a week of real writing, and count how often it stops or mishears you.
- If you want Dragon, install version 16.1 on a PC you can keep online, start it in trial mode, and test it on your own speech. You have five launches before you must activate.
- Do not pay for a Home or Premium listing. Nuance's store menu does not list either one 1.
- Try an open-source tool if you want free and offline dictation and are comfortable with setup.
Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows. It is a different product from Dragon. You can see what it does on our download page, and its plans are on our pricing page.
