Question · Dictation software
Is there a Dragon NaturallySpeaking education discount?
Nuance's education discounts are for schools, colleges and universities that buy through volume programs, not for individual students at a published price. Students can get the discount through their school or university, if it licenses Dragon and gives it to them after they prove their status. If you are a student, ask your school's IT service before you pay the full price.

Not as a published student price. Nuance describes its education discounts for institutions, and the one discount it describes is not a set amount. The practical route for a student is the institution: some universities buy a Dragon education license and give it to their students and staff once they prove their status.
Nuance's education discount is for institutions, not individual students
Nuance's education page for Dragon describes two programs. The first is the Open License Program, a "public volume license program" for qualified K-12 and HED organizations, the page's own term. The page says it "offers significant education discounts" 1. It gives no percentage and no price, so it does not tell you how large the saving is.
The second is the Dragon K-12 School License Program. It is a single-site program for K-12 schools that lets a school install Dragon Professional on up to 250 school-owned or school-leased computers at one location 2. A school can only cover computers it owns or leases, so it cannot cover a student's personal laptop.
The education program is aimed at the institution's purchasing decision, so a student who wants a single copy will not find a student price on the same page. For the editions Nuance sells and how they compare, see the guide to Dragon versions and editions.
Some universities license Dragon for their own students and staff
The clearest public example we found is the University of York. Its IT Services page lists a Dragon Professional Individual education license that benefits from education discounts. To get it, a qualified staff member or student must prove their status by submitting a valid university email address to Nuance, which then issues a serial number 3.
The same license is per device. The software is installed on a single computer, although that computer can have more than one user with separate voice profiles 4. So a student with this license cannot assume they can move it to a second computer without checking the terms.
We did not survey other universities, so we cannot say how many offer a license like this. Check your own institution's software catalog or IT service first, because that is where a university arrangement would be listed.
Resellers sell education licenses, but their prices conflict
Institutions also buy education licenses from resellers. A UK reseller sells the Dragon Professional V16 Educational Volume License for schools, colleges and universities, and it is priced per user 5. That is a volume license for an institution, not a discount for a single student.
You may also see academic editions advertised at prices far below the list price. We could not confirm any of those prices with Nuance or with the seller, and the figures we found do not agree with one another. Treat them as unverified. Before you pay, ask the seller in writing for the edition name, the version, the number of users, the proof of status it requires and its refund rules. A low price for an edition you cannot verify is not a discount you can rely on.

Students who need dictation for a disability may have another route
If dictation is needed for a disability, the school may provide the software rather than the student buying it. AskJAN lists Dragon NaturallySpeaking as an accessibility solution for people who cannot use a keyboard, and for students with physical challenges 6.
Testing rules can also decide which tool a student uses. For the US SAT digital tests, the College Board says that dictation uses the device's built-in speech-to-text or the student's own speech-to-text software 7. A student approved for dictation can therefore use their own software, but that approval is an accommodation, not a price. For how the rules apply, read whether students can use speech to text on tests, and for the school side, see speech to text for students with disabilities and the entry on the individualized education program.
What to do
- Ask your school or university IT service whether it licenses Dragon for students. Check its software catalog first.
- If you need dictation for a disability, ask your disability or accessibility office whether it can provide the software, or whether it will approve your own.
- If you buy it yourself, name the exact edition and version you want, and confirm the license count and whether it is per device or per person.
- Get the education terms in writing from the seller before you pay: the proof of status they require, the refund rules and whether the license is per device.
- If cost is the barrier, check the free options and the free dictation software guide before you commit. A built-in tool may cover your needs.
