Question · Dictation software
Is there a subscription or cloud version of Dragon?
Yes, but only for the cloud product, Dragon Professional Anywhere, which is sold as an annual or monthly subscription. The desktop program, Dragon Professional 16 for Windows, is sold as a license for one user, and the store and reseller we checked do not sell it on a subscription.

Yes, there is a subscription, but it covers the cloud product only. Nuance sells that product as Dragon Professional Anywhere, and resellers bill it by the year or by the month. The desktop program, Dragon Professional 16 for Windows, is sold as a license for one user, and the store and reseller we checked do not offer it on a subscription. The two are separate purchases, so compare their terms as well as their prices.
For the version history and the other editions, read our guide to Dragon NaturallySpeaking versions and prices. For the wider category, see dictation software.
The cloud version is Dragon Professional Anywhere, and it is sold by subscription
Dragon Professional Anywhere is the cloud-based version of Dragon. Nuance's end-user training guide describes its cloud-hosted technology as the reason users always have the latest version of the software 1. That guide dates from July 2021, so it describes the product as it was then. Nuance's US store menu lists Dragon Professional Anywhere and Dragon Legal Anywhere as products when we checked 2, though a menu is only a snapshot.
The prices come from resellers, and they differ. The table gives the list prices we checked on October 16, 2026. Each is for a one-year term.
| Option | Seller | Price | Billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Professional Anywhere | StartStop | $660 per year 3 | Annual, one-year term |
| Dragon Professional Anywhere | Milner | $480 per year 4 | Annual, one-year term |
| Dragon Professional Anywhere | StartStop | $55 per month 5 | Monthly, still a one-year term |
The monthly price is also listed on a one-year term, so do not assume you can cancel after one month. Read the terms before you sign. These are prices on a web page, not quotes, so confirm the current figure with the seller.
The desktop Dragon 16 is a license, and a year of the cloud version costs about the same
The desktop product is sold differently. CDW lists a one-user Dragon Professional 16 license at $685.99 6. At StartStop's annual price, that license costs about the same as one year of the subscription 7.
The comparison changes with the number of years. A license is bought once for the version you buy, while a subscription keeps charging you for as long as you stay on it. At Milner's annual price the subscription is cheaper in the first year. If you keep the subscription for two years, its total passes the license price at either seller's annual rate.
A license price does not always show whether future updates are included. That depends on the seller's terms, so ask before you buy.
Cloud means the product depends on Nuance's servers and release policy
The cloud product runs on Nuance's infrastructure, and Nuance decides how long each release keeps working. Its 2026.1 release notes say that a release more than 24 months old will no longer function, because of advances in the cloud infrastructure 8. The same page has a life cycle table that gives an end-of-life date for each release.
For a buyer, this means a cloud subscription is only as current as the release Nuance keeps running. Ask the seller which release you will be given, and check its date in that table. A desktop license has a different support policy, and you should check that one separately.
Our question on whether Dragon needs the internet explains when a connection matters for each version.
It depends on how long you will use it and whether you need the cloud
Three cases cover most buyers.
- A short project. A subscription lets you pay in smaller amounts, and its first-year price can be lower than a license. Both billing options run for a one-year term, so check the cancellation rules first.
- Daily use for several years. A license usually costs less over time, if the desktop product does what you need. Two years of either annual subscription costs more than the license 4 6.
- An organization that needs the cloud deployment. The cloud product is sold on a subscription, not as a license. If you need it for that reason, the subscription is the choice, and the desktop license is not a substitute.
What to do before you pay
- Decide which product you need. Dragon Professional 16 runs on your own Windows PC. Dragon Professional Anywhere runs on Nuance's cloud. Buying the wrong one is the easiest mistake to make.
- Ask the seller for the term. Check whether the price is per year or per month, and what happens at the end of the term.
- Ask what the price includes. Ask whether updates are included, how many users the price covers, and whether the license covers future releases.
- Check the release. For the cloud product, look up the end-of-life date for the release you will receive.
- Check the desktop requirements before you buy a license, using our guide to Dragon NaturallySpeaking's system requirements.
- Test on your own speech if the seller offers a trial, as described in how to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
If you want dictation that runs on your own device on a Mac or Windows PC, Yap, which we make, is an on-device option. Compare its prices on our pricing page with the Dragon prices above. For the cost of the desktop product on its own, see how much Dragon NaturallySpeaking costs.
